I died laughing when EA came out. Only 4 games from them came out from them. Two of which are sports games. And when Iwata kept saying about new ways to play, may he R.I.P, I kept thinking; do these new ways to play work good?
This reveal and the marketing that followed is what led MANY casuals to believe this was just a new Wii accessory. Why Nintendo continues to live in a bubble and how can some people excuse them still, is beyond me.
+TS Prism their marketing is the worst lol like naming a device the new 3ds... it should just be assumed that whatever 3ds is on the shelf is the new one. esplaining to a friend, "i bought a new 3ds" makes it sound like youre saying you replaced your old one or you decided against buying a used 3ds, instead of sounding like you bought the next generation of 3ds
+TS Prism Yup. So many journalists thought the Wii U was a freaking tablet accessory similar to Wii Fit. It was a huge fail by Nintendo. They should have named it something different or at least emphasize HEAVILY on it being an entirely new console.
The Wii brand still had some considerable clout back in 2011 they thought it would drive sales. Also the Wii U does contain original Wii hardware inside of it so you can argue it's an upgraded Wii rather than an entirely different console. Though you could also say the Wii was an upgraded Gamecube with motion controls and they didn't call it the Super Gamecube.
I was one of those who kept on saying - this will flop, what a joke etc, but now, since I finally have one and got the Mario Kart 8 bundle, I love it. It has won me over completely and am excited to see what is on the horizon for Nintendo - Hyrule Warriors, Super Smash Brothers, Bayonetta 2 (with the original one on the disc but enhanced), Zelda, Yoshi Woolly World, Amiibo - yes, they do look like they will be very fun to add into the games, and many, many more! Thank you Nintendo for winning me over with a great console and great games Also, seeing how 3rd party developers have almost all abandoned the Wii U, that saddens me a bit because they could create some very new and fresh ways to play games. Hopefully, some will begin to come back once Wii U sales begin to pick up during the latter part of this year and into next with all the new games coming out, etc. I think once they see the numbers and while yes, I know they are not as good as the original Wii and as good as the PS4 and Xbox One, but people are still buying this system and are enjoying it. My Wii sat for a very long time because the games that came out for it, they never caught my attention, but.....now that I have a Wii U, I can go back and revisit those games that I did love on Wii - Red Steel 2, Manhunt 2, Metroid Trilogy, Zelda: Skyward Sword - which I havent played yet and will on the Wii U - that is what I love about it. While, yes, there are only around 280 games for the Wii U itself, there is a huge back catalog of Wii games that can be played on it. This is something I would of thought Sony or Microsoft would of capitalized on - backwards compatibility - on their next-gen consoles, but they never did. Not too sure on the reason why for that, but they didnt and that is what makes the Wii U great for me - I do have a few Wii games that I never played and now, can play them and they look better than before! Is the Wii U for kids? Yes. Is the Wii U for families? Yes. Is the Wii U for core gamers and even for hardcore gamers - YES! Its for everyone who want a complete new, fresh, and totally different gaming experience
Man, I love Nintendo, but they really dropped the ball with the Wii U (it's an underrated system, and I still enjoy it). It's clear they tried to 'let it ride' with the success with the Wii, and failed. Looks like they got their game back with the Switch though!
All the focus on the controller, but they never showed us properly what the console looks like. I was very confused when they first revealed it, thinking it was an accessory to the Wii until they revealed it had better graphics. He should have walked on stage with the console and controller in hand! Made it clear from the start.
I wish just one console made by Microsoft with their amazing online, Sony with their amazing hardware, and Nintendo with the amazing first party games. Then go back to their normal bickering. Too bad this will probably never happen...
+SuperLmayo both Xbox and Playstation have terrible first Party Games Gran Turismo , Halo (the 5th was the shit Game of the Year) forza (Burnout is better ) and Fable
+Minene Uryuu922 Playstation's first party games are actually pretty good, Xbox's first party games used to be good but lately they've really sucked. The Naughty Dog games are fantastic, Bloodborne is superb, and there's a PlayStation game being produced by Kojima in the works. To call Playstation's exclusives terrible is just ignorant.
NJF Productions That's because it is. This is the 2011 presentation and not the 2012 one so it has the prototype controller. It is slightly shorter and has 2 3DS-like analogue pads. It also has the start and select buttons in different places.
Also people don't forget he said that these 'games' on the WiiU are merely tech demos so dont expect them to be in production of another Zelda game. This will be similar to the Link vs Ganondorf video clip and the Final Fantasy 7 graphical upgrade from Sony's E3 a couple years ago.
I still want to know it "the box" will play movies? We now know that it doesn't in fact use BluRay so that should put it at 360 level graphics and capacity.
I am actually pretty excited. Even th third party stuff showed it had power and we know nintendo makes good games. Even better if i need to lose my TV i still can play. I'm sure more stuff will come in the months to come.
They keep saying new controller, rather than new console. I remember at the time being so confused at first, like “oh this is a new controller for Wii that lets you do even more with the Wii and it is more focused towards traditional gaming”
Wii U controller reveal = an embarrassing mistake. Half of the features associated with the screen (such as drawing) is useless cr*p no one would ever care about.
Carter Moth I would go one further, 90% of it's capabilities were useless. Granted, it was enjoyable and even useful to use from time-to-time as far as not having to rely on of the TV is concerned but was not worth Nintendo's effort and the system's price-tag. Sad because I actually liked the WiiU, but it was terribly marketed and too gimmicky to gain any relevant attraction.
I legit feel bad for nintendo and how hard this thing failed. This was so close to being the nintendo switch. Nintendo is looked upon in such an undeserving manner. They continuously innovate but get left behind.
+Raul Osuna its crappy , 3D World is the worst 3D Mario , Zelda Wii U wont even come out on it since its far less powerful than a GC and the Gamepad is ugly
@MightyWebScorpion Yeah I gotcha but still if the screen is about 7" big i hope it is at least rechargable, and buying additional controllers are gonna be crazy expensive.
I still stand by the statement that anyone who didn't understand that Wii U was a new console and not just an add-on to the Wii must not have been paying attention. They mentioned multiple times "Wii U Console" and Iwata even clarified that it was backwards compatible with all the standard Wii accessories. I really can't understand why people were so confused. Yes, it was still marketed really poorly, but the criticisms on this announcement fall flat in my opinion.
@PyroPoison Yeah I was wondering that. But no it is not. They haven't showed the actual console yet but it is a completely new one let me tell you that. Wii couldn't run this high quality graphics.
A piece of history guys. The start of one of the biggest fails in gaming, only behind the PS3's price point reveal. Edit: Jesus, no wonder this thing bombed so bad. You don't mix old with the new on a reveal trailer and expect people to understand on their own. Hopefully the Switch will keep Nintendo afloat, even though it doesn't seem likely.
@insideoutsider056 They can always copy, but never match. Just take a look at Kinect or Playstation move... They don't come close to the quality wii has. That's just my opinion though :P
Omfg! They have out beat us xbox 360 & PS3 players! Noooooo! & I think he almost said it had 3d FREE from glasses! :0 (No glasses!) dear got! did u c the graphic preview of the flying bird & fish? omg! We're fucked... For now T_T I'm a ps3 player & owner n never owned a Nintendo wii console cuz I thought it was 4 kids but this!... Wow! This changed everything!
they should of made a console using traditional controllers that supported wiimotes. this controller just seems too much! and probably expensive and doesnt look battery friendly either. im still buying one though lol. Zelda HD FTW
There are rumors that Nintendo is making a new system code named "fusion" due to the poor wii u sales. I doubt this will happen nor a good idea, so wii u should last about 5 years. But it probuably won't get the same treatment as ps4/x1 because it's no where near as powerful
dareallink Not really, I still see them make games for Nintendo. Nintendo is a household name, even if they continue to make loses for more than 50 years, they can still come out strong, they have accumulated a lot of money over the years and the 3DS seems to be selling like cocaine. Now Nintendo is speaking of a new system, code named NX. This could be the one that people were expecting from Nintendo. Nintendo fans are clearly there for the first party games like Zelda, Mario and etc. Even I myself bought Nintendo consoles, because of these titles. If I wanted anything from EA, Ubisoft, WB and etc. I would buy them on PlayStation. I am personally not a big fan of EA, WB and some others, my favourites are Rockstar, Team Ninja, CapCom, NamcoBandai, Konami and a few more. And some of these are still making games for Nintendo.
Yeah but then they'll come back for the switch, we already have doom 2016, rocket league, skyrim and wolfenstein, and it has been proven to be powerful enough to run gta v
