The best part about Chinese cars is their effect on other manufacturers. They force other EV companies to be more competitive in terms of quality and price. Without competition, prices will stay much too high.

Lidar is an acronym of "light detection and ranging" or "laser imaging, detection, and ranging". It is a method for determining ranges by targeting an object or a surface with a laser and measuring the time for the reflected light to return to the receiver - from Wikipedia. So, yeah, it shoots lasers out of the roof.

Yep, mentioned it multiple times which really annoyed me when, as you say, that's exactly what it DOES do. Aside from kitchens in Rivians I couldn't really think of any "unnecessary features" of other EVs either. Seemed like making a point out of nothing.
@@theolich4384 Not fast enough to be up against M3 P. M3 LR also has 2 motors, and with a acceleration boost, it's still a lot cheaper and also faster than a ET5.
It has more range, you can upgrade the battery more easily, driving assist is more future proof with lidar, quality control is better and they don't have an insane CEO being more bothered with twitter than inproving the QC of teslas.
My experience, testing the bigger brother of this, the ET7, was that it was very much like a Tesla Mpdel S, but better in every imaginable way; better quality feel, better use of space, better design (especially on the interior) and much, much more fun to drive (when in sport mode). I expect this to be in the same way, in regards to the Tesla Model 3, which they obviously pin-poited as the main compettror. Looks similar, but better, it's a sedan (when it could been a hatchback) and it even got the same kind of interiot door-poppers as the Model 3. I love the interor - one of the best looking on the market and the exterior is also very good looking. Will be interesting to compare with both the ET7 and the Model 3, if/when I get a chance to test drive it.
What's really hard to understand is that both the ET5 and the BYD Seal look significantly better than the Tesla Model 3, even though they are all similarly styled. What is Tesla doing? Can't they hire someone who knows how to design beautiful cars? One only has to look at a Tesla model X to realise just how clueless their design department is. I remember when Hyundai couldn't style a car to save their lives, then they hired Luc Donckerwolke and went from some of the ugliest cars on the road to some of the best. I think NIO and BYD are going to do very well. I'd pay more for a Seal or an ET5 than I would a Tesla Model 3. Just make them available in North America. Good review.
If they can manage that then they will have some decent range even with towing a caravan. But that battery will be like half the weight of the whole car...
I think its a solid state tech. kWH is just a measure of energy, not volume. The new tech must be able to fit more kwh of energy into the same sized (or smaller?) cells/pack

It's funny how Elliot completely avoids the fact that this is simply a less good copy of a Tesla Model 3 at a much higher cost when you factor in the battery rental. They literally took a Model 3 and copied it note for note. And he praises them for all the things Tesla brought to market in 2017 with the Model 3 that Nio shamelessly copies.
While no expert, the Model 3 didn't have a hatchback as I recall. Finish quality in a Tesla is also part of what I hear back from the handful of Tesla owners I know.

6:28 umm, you can't compare pricing against other makers when you leave the monthly battery rental cost out of your Nio pricing. You MUST add this back in to the total cost of ownership to make any kind of fair comparison. Over five years of ownership that battery will add $10,800 to the cost of ownership. And you'll pay that every 5 years FOREVER.
you can always buy it without the battery swap, and don’t forget to discount the free swaps per month, which will save you the cost of charging / fuelling, access to the nio houses, nio service included, etc.
You will also have a battery in perfect condition with the latest technology forever. You also get two free swaps (at least) that you can save every month that will save you around $10 000 in those five years if we take average german prices at charging stations.
I've watched for many years; I'm at pains to say that I think the script for this video could have been tighter. As a friendly critique, there's a lot of repetition which if focused would have been a narrative build up to the final conclusion. But the conclusion was instead repeated throughout the video and I think it created a bit of a headwind. Big fan of fully charged and Elliot's reviews. Please keep up the good work.
I agree, I have this with more videos on this channel lately. Quite a bit of repetition and praise for certain brands and ideas, but less focus on quality feeling, driving and actual range.

If the 75kWh battery gives you 560km range... Why don't they have a 50kWh option? A battery with a bit over 370km range, should be be perfectly sufficient, even for longer journeys.
CLTC range is known to be generous. Multiply by 0.8 for WLTP and once more for EPA range. Nio cars aren't known to be the most efficient out there, but you have battery swap to boot.
with the diminishing returns on adding more and more battery, it may be you would get more than that, but also i feel we need more 20/30/40kwh batteries, without their own weight to drag around they would be much moree efficent. That doesnt make sense but you probably know what i mean.
The polestar 2 has a 0-60mph time of 4.4, 4.5 seconds.. The NIO is a conservative 4 seconds with a more likely 3.8 seconds with one medium weight driver & not loaded in the back..
Same range BMW i4 costs 10k less in Germany. Telsa Model 3 with Nio-comparable quality is 20k less. I don't think it is going to sell especially well in Europe.
Love the ET5! Sadly it's priced way above the Model 3 here in Sweden, around €15,000 more to be exact (SR M3, no battery lease on Nio). That's in no way justified for me, even if I would 99% go for the Nio ET5. Even renting/leasing the battery is more expensive than Model 3, starting price is then €3500 or so more which is fine by itself but then I would need to pay €180/month for the battery... Sorry Nio, you need to reevaluate your price model here in Sweden.

The model 3 had a price cut 2 weeks ago in China and is now 229,900 yuan. Which is significantly cheaper than this car! Obviously the model 3 has a smaller battery but is more efficient and has no monthly fees for battery.
@@rs-dp6pr the battery included Nio was already 30+% more expensive than a model 3! The only cheap Nio was the battery rental one. But this is now 15% more expensive than a base model 3 in China.

Just got my Atto 3 in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 Best Interior I've ever seen. Every car has almost the same Interior style . Atto 3 is completely different and is less serious.

Man, you nailed it when you said, most people are going to be on their phones in the passenger seat. I always thought other manufacturers with their 20 thousand screens was way too much. Also, I love your lasers shooting out of the roof comment re: other manufacturers. That's what I love about NIO. They are elegant in their design.
How are the Chinese auto manufacturers achieving such high quality new cars so quickly. It took the Japanese and Koreans more than decade each to match the quality of the european cars of their era's. China seems to be romping ahead with EV's in well within a decade. This is fantastic for making EV's more affordable and available, but how are they doing it?
I'm all aboard the EV-hype train and yet nothing about this car or its pricing appealed to me. Battery swapping is not the selling point motor-journalists seem to think it is.
I find it really weird that battery swapping isn't a thing in "the west", given that so many of the "I'll never buy an EV / I drive 5,000 miles every day in my diesel without problems" brigade state battery life/replacement and long range drive requirements as their primary issues with EVs. My first thought was it's a knock-off of the Tesla with arguably nicer styling in places, but the taxi light/LIDAR on the roof, and the fact it'll be WAY more expensive than the Tesla in the UK just makes it a complete non-starter
Focussed on practicality.Where is the manual controls for temp and vol.Trying to navigate a screen to change these settings is arguably more dangerous than using your mobile whilst driving.
Can you guys start another channel and re review some of these cars a few years down the track. Call it fully charged rewind and just let people know how some of these vehicles are going quality wise, battery status, durability etc. just a thought as it would certainly help buyers looking at getting into the used EV market. Thanks Elliot. Looks like a great car, but I’m doubting the whole battery swapping thing. I don’t see it becoming something widespread for a single brand. And on the practical side, getting large grid connections on that scale might be a problem for the next couple of years in some countries.
There are countless benefits to battery swap. Not getting out of your car, fully autonomous, and only pushing a button to swap is just one. In the Winter this a big benefit. NIO has agreements with many petrol companies to build out swap stations at existing gas stations. Charging batteries slowly during off-peak hours is less costly and degrades the batteries less. Swapping a faulty battery with no service call is brilliant. Swap reduces total cost of ownership. Able to upgrade or downgrade battery capacity at every swap. No built-in battery technology obsolescence. I could go on...
battery swap aside, NIO evs are still brilliant EVs, with better fit and finishing than Tesla Also battery swap might not suit your country, but it certainly does in China
Interesting review. Unfortunately haven't entailed most of its technical specs of the car such as suspension, wheel size, battery type, infotainment system and software etc. I think without that it is very difficult to place this car on the market and compare it or position it above most of the manufacturers...
I agree with you. Too much aesthetics, not enough specs. Aesthetics are subjective, but u can use stats to compare other vechiles in class. Least he mentioned the lack of frunk. So many fully charged reviews dont mention if frunk or not.
At least charging speed is important... I agree, too much rambling and too few specs. Almost sounded like a NIO advertisement, the trunk is really tiny on such a big car and without a frunk to compensate not many families would pick this vehicle.
I wish that makers of EVs would get away from the notion that an EV has to be full of automation features that add little to the ownership experience and may be prone to annoyance or even failure when used in real world conditions. (The door open button is a good example.)
Nice looking car! But... a couple of things. Like almost all Chinese car companies, with the exception of BYD, none are profitable. And while Nio's battery swapping seems neat, it either is going to make it harder to become profitable, or its owners will be paying a monthly fee in perpetuity. If you have a battery-swap scheme, you have several issues. First, you have to manufacture multiple battery packs for each car- so you have a larger capital expenditure. Second, it makes it hard to develop future battery packs without having to build out either larger battery swap stations, or having different versions of it. Third, it is going to make it hard to sell the car, as not everyone is going to want to rent the battery- and how do you do a trade-in for a new car that is not a Nio, with a rented battery? With battery charging times getting less and less, there is just no future need for battery swap stations, especially for just driving around the city, which most drivers do the vast majority of the time. And it is a whole lot cheaper to build charging stations than battery swap stations, even without including the cost of the extra batteries.
Good analysis . But i think its just an extra feature thats nice to have. I won't be buying a nio just because of it. But it does provides extra flexibilty. You can chose to buy battery outright or rent it for lowering initial buy price. Easier to upgrade to future better batteries. I wouldn't worry about battery swap station being incompatible, because they can be dynamically adjusted based on different model's measurements. But it is really useful ? I don't think so, i think Nio is wasting money. I wish they can focus on making their cars cheaper, but i guess they want to be a premium brand, so they want something like this to differentiate.
Is it just me, or would anyone else want one of these with the Chinese language badges on the back? When they land in Europe they'll have English language badging, which won't be as interesting.
I can't ignore that cake comment. Ever since discovering what hot sauce can do to frosting, I have never gone back. Although, to be fair, I use Louisiana style hot sauce, and only a dash, but the flavor difference is incredible. The slight bit of vinegar and spice bring out a vibrancy in the frosting that is essential. Your saying that hot sauce is too weird for cake is like if I were to say that salt is too weird for food. Otherwise, great video!
It does not. Since Tesla dropped its prices. The model 3 is cheaper than this Nio in every country they are both present (including China, where the model 3 is about 15% cheaper)
Pretty sure he deliberately avoided talking/comparing about the model 3 other then it’s price. The cars are basically the same. People will be cross shopping them and not so much the others that he mentioned.

I think Nio is far too expensive and a company that thinks battery swapping can work -well Elon tried that very bad idea - as Sandy Munro says ‘you never want to have connectors being stressed’ and especially high voltage ones plus others ! Oh it’s just $10800 every 5 years for battery rental !, a reason for the cars worth dropping out of the sky - just imagine the 2nd 5 years Every car beats that !, even ICE costs
What a bummer i love this car, but this car is WAY to expensive! It should be cheaper then M3, Tesla pricecut crushes the compatitors on price and performance. This car should be in the 38k - 42k euro range to be attractive (Model 3 is now in the market for 44k euro) on a price point of view. Wonder how the software is on the ET5.
Can’t account for tastes. Tesla is not winning any beauty prizes but at least they’re bland. Here the front looks compressed and horrible and the the color looks like it came out of some orifice.
One added feature I would like to see is a 220V AC outlet somewhere, say in the trunk, which I could use to power my electric chain saw, welder or even a kettle.
Very focused on aesthetics which is always a personal choice. Mechanical specs are much more useful than a sales pitch about how beautiful it is. PS I think its bloody ugly with the warts on the roof and the back end looks like a large letter box slot, but that's just my opinion.
Elliot's reviews are always obnoxious when he spends time telling people what they don't need in a car. I like 1,000 watts in my sound system! Say YOU don't need it Elliot.
Great review, thanks. It'll be a while before battery swapping reaches the smaller island nations off mainland Europe, I imagine. Malta, Cyprus, Ireland, (UK?) will likely never be a priority.
@@shoelessjoe428 Cornwall? Dundee? Enniskillen? It is always tempting to only cover areas of a higher density population, when providing infrastructure. The UK has a relatively low density of population overall so this will remain a challenge.

In terms of range this might beat the Tesla Model 3. I wonder if the rest will hold up though in comparison. Will certainly have a look at it once it arrives in Europe.
The Tesla prices quoted here are wrong. The M3 starts at 229,900 RMB (about 33,000 USD). Significantly lower than the price of this car *without* a battery.
Needs an estate version for those of us with dogs. Most SUVs have a similar boot space to an estate but usually due to the height not the floor area, so no where for dogs to lay when travelling
Please don't tell anyone what they don't need in a stereo. 1000 watts is great, especially since audiophiles frown against putting aftermarket stereos on EVs due to warranty. More automakers should focus on providing good sound systems
You haven't done your homework have you? Let me enlighten you. The price you mention is for the model 3 standard. So worse range, rear wheel motor only. It's pretty much substantially worse in every single aspect. Interior, infotainment, tech, performance, reliability, quality. Andddd most important of all is the free swaps/supercharging and God tier service in China that your NIO comes with. Yes. NIO is undercutting tesla big time. You just got to do some digging because it's not the car alone that you got to look into for when it comes to NIO as it is a very service-oriented company. The free swaps alone over a period of 2-3 years can save you enough money to be able to buy a bmw 3 series. NIO is just so much better overall for the consumer than any other EV. Sadly, people aren't educated enough yet to realize it and you appear to be an example of that ;D
yeh really poor. I get that the video was probably filmed a few weeks ago before the China price cuts for tesla but to have the title and tweet about it undercutting is so bad form/use for clicks. People who even know a little about EVs have heard of Tela price cuts, I would have at least checked the claims before posting. I expect better from this channel.
@@stefanospap6288 You are blind let me open your eyes. People are so blind. Model 3 standard range is 540 km vs 550 km (Nedc), so basically no difference. Infotainment, tech, reliability, service is not better because it's basically a new, amateur company that has not proven the reliability and service yet. It takes time. Tesla is the leading brand in infotainment software tech, if you disagree then you are blind. Yes it is faster 0-60 6 sec vs 4 sec but you have to pay extra for your battery swap every month in 5 years it's about $7k and the worst part is you can't buy ET5 outside of china with BaaS (Battery as a service). Outside of china the price is very high and there are not many swapping stations. It's a car only for the china market for and can't compete with tesla. Even With that higher price they also lose money. Lol
For the NIO sales in Norway 98% is with BaaS (battery rental). Also BaaS includes charging (200 - 600 kWh) and 2 - 6 battery swaps depending on the rental deal.
@@MelkorNO I did say 'most' for a reason. Norway isn't typical of most of Europe as you were early adopters, supported by incentives for purchase and tax breaks, so are way ahead of the game. Here in the UK for example there are now no incentives or government support apart from VED. The infrastructure is still poor due to lack of investment, fragmented at best and quite often broken. We need more manufacturers to break below the £30k mould and to start producing more affordable efficient EV's.
$48,400(US) is not a luxury price in the US. The price is more "middle of the line". What level ADAS is available? Is the charging Bidirectional. That is the charge rate speed?
Let's see what the European price is for the model that passes safety tests. Rolling out plentiful swapping stations for batteries in 27 EU jurisdictions will also be interesting to watch. 🤔
Price in Germany (👎): € 50k without Battery + 169/month BaaS 75 kwh, 289/month 100 kwh. Buying (BaaS is not possible when buying the Battery) the Battery costs 12k for 75 kwh and 21k for 100 kwh.
Color is basically oxidized yellow, exactly like an old bright yellow pickup truck I had decades ago that faded in the sun to a powdery washed out yellow.
