sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me
To be fair to Nioh, it's explained multiple times that the Yokai we fight are basically corrupted version of themself, some of them even thanks you for killing them when you take their souls.
Also, aren't a lot of the yokai in Nioh born from Amrita corruption and negative emotions? A lot of them are spirits born from human malevolence and misery taking the form of yokai, at least in the first game. That might also have something to do with it.
Honestly, it's probably most just "This is a monster with a cool design, let's make the player fight it". (Also, Yokai in-game are jerks to human allies and also Anjin, who is not a shiftling, so... We'll tall it alternate-dimension. The games pull that with the hidden teahouse, anyway.)
I was at the stream when you fought Daidara Bocchi and when you defeated it it spoke and thanked you for giving it peace, even if it was the peace of the grave, this makes me think that the Daidara Bocchi you fought had something corrupting it. Maybe Otakemaru was controlling it too. Actually, Otakemaru might very well be the cause of all the normally benevolent Yokai acting completely out of character, they might be influenced by him in some way. If Otakemaru was able to corrupt all the normally peaceful Yokai then that would explain why when you defeat a Yokai and it drops its Soul Core you need to purify it before you can use it, you need to purify the corruption from Otakemaru so it won’t corrupt you too.
Well that was a theme of the previous game too, that the constant waring and bloodshed turned more and more of the lands youkai into bloodthirsty monsters, and there were people creating even more monsters on top of that.
@@TheRezro While we have some examples of that (which I wont say for the sake of spoilers), not every human turned yokai through amrita had a guardian spirit.
Greek Mythology: God of lighting can't keep it in his pants Shinto: founding god gives birth to other gods by WASHING HIS FACE. Also, all your furniture wants you dead. Except when it doesn't. Futon? Kills. Drapes? Kills? String instruments? Surprisingly chill. What's next, ink is gonna come to life? (One quick google search later) I was KIDDING!
thats orettymuch the stamderd woth greek gods the greeks wer extreemly male dominated so naturally their gods reflected their lust of rape n murder freaken pesoden actually raped athenas temple maden in the temple as sge was giving her offerings which was taboo to both gods n men causing athena to b so hellishly angry instead of punishing pesiden n comforting her servent sge like all gods of greece punished her own slave turning her into the nightmare known as meduca looks like we can add vengeance to the list of godly sins 😂
@Frost E Bear srsly is that the actual story my gosh some Japanese kid must of come up with that 😂 look daddy i made a god life flows from his armpits 😂 mother thats very good dear 😂 kid u think people will worship it 😂 mother its very imaginitive but i think we have more sense then that 😂 centurys later the cult of the armpit god was founded lol 😂
I mean, honestly, house youkai make sense. Lotta people die from those types of things. You wake up to your futon on your face or contorted in a way that looks like it's trying to grab you, or see an innocuous object in a certain light...bam, terrifying.
Uh yeah Nashandra would like to say hello. The woman back in town was your greatest ally as she was capable of using the souls you collected to level up and get stronger. These are just the ones off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.
"The only difference between a Kami and a Yokai in Shinto is whether or not they are properly enshrined and worshiped." In this case are Kapa now Kami? After all they now have shrines and are generally "worshiped" by the masses via the things like being "protectors of rivers" via the adds to pick up litter.
Loron20 in one if his live-streams he stated some kappa are praised as kami. That said, it’s more an individual basis rather than a species thing. A kappa praised is a kami, one feared or despised and left unpraised is a youkai.
The short answer is YES! Same as one of most worshiped Kami in Japan is one who is regularly a villain in many anime* (before he atoned). That also apply to most cases in the game. Vile Yo-Kay are result of Amarita poisoning, not that they are vile themselves (usually). There is also clear connection between protagonist Yo-Kai form and his guardian spirit.
@@TheRezro Especially when you consider how many of the "Guardian Spirits" in the games would either be a Yokai in normal myths or divine creature, with the spider, centipede, and raven being prime examples of Yokai based spirits, while the thunder dogs, fire wolf, and Nobunaga's bird of paradise being divine based spirits.
I love how Kami and Yokai are nuanced and have variety. Yokai can be benevolent and chill or malevolent and brutal, while Kami are merely worshiped/revered but still capable of being anywhere on the spectrum between malevolent and benevolent. Heck, a lot of malevolent yokai make sense in their historical context. Throw away your shears, knives, and sewing needles before they're completely unusable, thus wasting the iron that went into making them? Yeah, the yokai that possess them will love shedding your blood as payment for your thoughtlessness.
Considering their love for the highest quality kimonos, the Biwa Bokuboku remind me of gaudy bards in fantasy games. It's also fun when beings from folklore and myths are similar across different cultures!
Gaijin Goomba, another RU-vidr was talking about this manga called Mieruko-Chan some time ago, and I could tell, you would go absolutely crazy with joy, because how this manga portrays both yokai and kami is astonishing. Btw the RU-vid channel that I heard about this manga from is lost pause
I'm so happy to see this I feel like everybody forgot about Nioh 2 just cause animal crossing and doom eternal came out and in my mind that's not fair kind like the yokai you mention in this video got a bad rap for no reason great video I'm glad I can know the truth about these benevolent yokai
Sekibanki is what is known as a 'nukekubi' (lit. 'missing neck'), similar to but different from rokurokubi. The nukekubi is often depicted as being more violent than its cousin: in addition to the drinking of lantern oil mentioned in the video, the nukekubi supposedly had vampiric tendencies and would float around town as a disembodied head trying to find victims to gorge on their blood. At sunrise the head would return to its body and the owner unaware of what happened the previous night. As far as I was able to see upon doing a cursory search there are no nukekubi that are aware of their condition and are able to spawn multiple floating heads, so Sekibanki is almost certainly an adaptation of the folklore - especially because it seems as though she switches between being a nukekubi and a rokurokubi when it is convenient for her.
@@Stolanis Sekibanki's technically representative of not just the rokurokubi and nukekubi, but also, as her theme song would suggest, a dullahan. But, in every bit of Touhou canon I've seen(Which does exclude an amount of the manga, to be fair), she's called a rokurokubi, and most people recognize her as being such. I know she's not a 100% true version of one.
I think a lot of the misconception of yōkai being evil comes from so many anime mistranslating them as "demons" even if they aren't oni or akuma. I'm looking at you, InuYasha.
Yo-Kai originally were evil as commonly born from negativity, but Japanese have tradition of purification so lets say they were domesticated. Also Oni thingy is also mistranslation. Nowadays they are usually translated as Ogres (because they literally are that). Only word Akuma should be translated as Demon/Devil (in is also name used for Satan in Japanese Christianity).
To be fair, Inuyasha did a decent job of portraying Youkai. There's good ones, there's actively malevolent ones, there's ones who couldn't care less about humanity, and there are many who just want to be left alone
Have you considered maybe doing a video on the guardian spirits and their inspirations/real life folklore counterparts? That would be an interesting topic to see!
To be fair they have an in unvierse explanation for the aggression of all these yokai. Basically they have gone extremely crazy and violent. even the more peaceful ones are after your blood.
Honestly the worst thing about the long Neck guy is his human form he has the poise of a mountain and the damage of a nuke and that's why I always hide and blast his head with a cannon
I prefer Nioh 1 and 2 over Dark Souls because of the Expedition mode that let’s you have two or three people join you without using an ochoko(?) cup. Granted I’ve seen some new enemy changes in comparison to single mode, but that’s a fair trade, I guess.
Let's be honest, out of all the bosses in Nioh 2. Shuten Doji is the best, his fight is simple yet hard, he has a unique weakness (Poison), has luxurious hair, and is perhaps the most handsome looking boss in the game.
I get what you mean about Dark Souls, what kept me from that series for so long wasn't the difficulty, it was how drab everything was. Sekiro and Nioh on the other hand are a good deal more colorful. Now you tell me that Nioh 2 has got a lot more than basic enemies and a Japanese theme grounded in Yokai? Sign me up. Edit: From a gameplay standpoint, how does it compare to Sekiro?
Sekiro is a rhythm game and Nioh is a 3D fighting game. As a whole Nioh is a souls like game with Diablo's loot system, Ninja Gaiden's difficulty and 3D fighting game like mechanics with a huge skill tree and armor skill system that allows for thousands of possible builds. It has the best combat mechanics out of all soulslike games, including soulsbourne. Nioh 1 and 2 is straight up the most Japanese game ever made, everything from characters, story, locations, equipment etc. down to even stats are cultural and historical references. It is a must play for anyone who loves Japanese culture.
Speaking of monsters and demons, I would love to see him cover mairimashita iruma-kun, and its ties to the Goetia. First piece of interesting lore and culture, the demon language (especially the numbers) is a stylized form of hebrew.
No, it’s very much different gameplay-wise. It borrows all the major mechanics like Estus, Bonfire, leave souls behind if you die. BUT the gameplay is vastly different. Enemies will most likely kill you in 1-3 hits while you do wet noodle damage...unless you break the game, which is surprisingly easy to do.

Now for some missing ninjas: Ryu Hayabusa Joe Musashi/Hotsuma (& the Kunoichi from Nightshade). Strider Isako (No one lives forever) Kurenai (Red Ninja - End of Honor)
Buuuut we can't forget part of the Nioh-2 storyline Red Eyed Yokai are corrupted and Blue Eyed are free of that corruption And we fight only red eyes at least i did even your own character has to fight it off with Tokichiro's help and a bit of Amrita
@@parkersandahl3949 It's not just the game crashing. EVERY TIME you do multiplayer, when someone arrives or leaves the Host's island, EVERY player is trapped until that person has fully loaded in or out. It's actually really annoying. No one can be in a menu screen, or it harasses you to close it, no one can do anything... You just wait. And it's kind of slow.
I do want to point out that some of the yokai we fight have been turned berserk by either bad people or because of the hatred and conflict created by the war in the game. Hell, the kamaitachi we fight early on was originally a friendly yokai who went berserk and our mission is to calm it down. I also want to point out that when you absorb the soul cores of many of the enemies in the game you sometimes get dialogue from them, and most tend to talk to you with a much friendlier tone than there aggressive nature in game would suggest (with some exceptions), possibly hinting that most of them have also been corrupted by the conflict created by the war.
I kinda get this feeling that the strife of the events of the games are twisting even the most placid of creatures out of control, making EVERYTHING into a murder monkey
When i first heard about from my father, Enenras portrayal in Nioh2 was admitedly weird considering Smogmella (whos supposed to he one) from the Yokai watch series is a very nice yokai. Also i found it odd he referred to the enenra wigh masculine pronouns as smogmellas a girl, so i had to go digging and turns out the creature is non-binary/genderless, so both interpretations could be valid. Edit: 7:42 whoa didn't actually expect smogmella to appear here. Same with lady longnek for rokurokubi, as well as dromp (daidarabochi) and swosh (umibozu, though apparently a more open hearted one at that) being mentioned.
7:52 well...there is the Namahage and Magatsu Warriors who hit like a truck and are tougher to deal with compared to the Rokurokubi who is actually pretty slow and predictable compared to the other two I mentioned. The hardest regular enemy (for me at least) is the Magatsu Warrior hands down. I hated them even more in the 1st Nioh, but now that it has attacks we can actually counter, it isn't as bad as it was in Nioh 1. But hey, that's just my opinion...😗
I got this game before quarantine became so strict and I gotta say I really do love this game (currently playing it on my channel). It’s combat for a soulslike is so darn good and addictive. All the weapons are fun to use (Swichglaive being my favorite behind Kusarigama). The Yokai in this game are perhaps the best designed monsters I’ve ever seen and I always take the time to go read their bios in the hut to read about the mythology surrounding them. It’s really got me interested and the fact a game makes me want research the yokai outside the game to appreciate the amount of effort the devs put into making these monsters as faithful (with some creative liberties like how you pointed out in this video) to their role in Japanese mythology really says how good this game is. Also my favorite yokai and boss from this game is the Yatsu-No-Kami.
I can see these benevolent yokais become malevolent after being mistreated. Take the Biwa Boku Boku as an example: what if it was born from a Biwa that was poorly handled by a owner who didn’t properly maintain it and only used to make loud noises to annoy people then actually play songs? It could totally become scornful to the point of killing its owner and use their corpse to play it properly.
Hey gaijin! One of your new twitch subs here (thanks to queens generosity) and I wanted to say something I forgot to at the stream - I think in universe the reason for the waira and other youkai on this list (at least most of them) being so dangerous is simply Amrita. It’s a corrupting force if misused or treated carelessly in Nioh, and when free of its influence several youkai are shown to be friendly. I bet without that driving them, the waira wouldn’t even consider attacking
Interesting moment to mention Smoke. Mortal Kombat 9 and 10 basically stated he got his smoke powers because his body is possessed by a demon named Enenra.
Yokai are honestly my favorite part of Japanese folklore, because aside from the more famous or infamous examples, they can be literally whatever. That big rock on the way to the market you think is giving you this weird look when viewed at a certain angle? Could be a yokai.
I want to see a sequel to this video. Exploring the mythological background of Nioh's version of the Nihon san dai aku yōkai or Great Three Evil Yokai of Japan. Otakemaru, Shuten Doji and Tamamo no Mae( or the Nine-Tailed Fox)
Super interesting GG! Mentioning the yokai are manifestations of nature at its worst does make me wanna see a video of yokai tied to natural disasters though. But yeah always down for a video rooting the underdog or someone/thing who’s misunderstood though!
You should go over the inspirations behind Daemon in bleeding edge! There may not be tons of content there, but youd get out infront of the crowd with this one and theres always something to learn!
In this case, the Waira you encounter are corrupted. Either by the bloodliust, tragedy, rage, sorrow, and general darkness of the times (Sengoku Japan was NOT a pretty time in history), or by the amrita
@6:30 it's intersting that you talk about Smoke, you might have already known but in MK9"s arcade ending it say as a child that he was sacrificed to a demon and reborn as an Enenra then in MKX after becoming a revanant takes on this name
As someone who has barely seen any of nioh 1 and even less of nioh 2, this video is definitely making want to play the second one just to see all these twisted forms of harmless to good natured yokai go full nightmare fuel
I think other good examples could be Yuki-Onna (some were malevolent, yes, but others were benevolent and/or simply lonely and might even marry and have children with human men), Kitsune (mischievous fox spirits at worst, but they were still benevolent and would even be worshiped as lesser deities), and Nekomata.
Where I don't remember seeing the Rokurokubi before the first dlc campaign of Nioh 1 it does make sense why there were "evil" there as they were soldiers for the warlord that campaign revolved around. Add in the fact that warlord's army openly had Yokai among it's ranks they would have no fear over that secret getting out among their comrades. Now the spitting fire and poison ya doesn't make to much sense though when you account for the more obscure detail of them drinking lantern oil the fire fits a little bit better as some oil still in their mouth being ignited by some set up with their teeth (either by tools or natural methods).
So basically, something happened leading up to the events of the game that even normally passive/virtuous yokai collectively decided that humans and those that sided with them needed a heaping helping of death?
It happens in multiple ways, but it all comes down to Amrita. It can be equal parts good and evil, as it can heal but also easily corrupt your mind, while also having magical, transformative properties as well. Some people misuse Amrita and turn either themselves or others into Yokai, and it can be done on purpose or by accident. At the same time, the Yokai are affected by the negative emotions and energies generated by the wars that happen throughout Japan. Lastly, your temperament as a Yokai is determined by your willpower and circumstances, which explains why some Yokai that are considered benevolent or harmless will be hostile, like the Rokurokubi for example. They're all soldiers that willingly chose to become Yokai so that they can serve their respective masters, and this extends to the major characters that have become Yokai, which are usually fought as bosses. You can tell when a Yokai has become hostile because it's eyes will glow red, and blue when they're docile. In light of all this, the majority of characters considered antagonists will use Amrita to cause problems. Trying to take over Japan? They use Amrita. Trying to get revenge on someone? They use Amrita. Trying to make a wish come true? They use Amrita. Trying to bring someone back from the dead? They use Amrita. Trying to win a war? They use Amrita. Etc, etc.
I think one of the point of Nioh, both 1 and 2, is that a lot of Yokai should be the completely harmless version of myth, but the constant war, slaughter and bloodshed is corrupting them into abominations. One of the Yokai weapon, Boiling Dragon, even says when awakened that he was a lake's sacred guardian before the battles at his shores corrupted him into a monster.
There's a lot of mentions of "true" or "actual" in comparisons to Nioh's yokai, but I think it's worth mentioning that both Nioh and Nioh 2 immediately show the players that the yokai are being warped by the amrita which is are LITERALLY human sin in crystallized form created in the wake of the wars of the feudal era and lingering after Nobunaga's unification war. Also that the Biwa Boku-boku is creating an image of a famous monk to relive being played by him once again.
Interestingly enough nioh storywise is saying the demon otatsu and the over use of spirit stones caused the yokai to become aggitated and become akama I think right?
Daidara-bocchi kinda reminds me of Edward the Booble from Moomin. He's an absolutely gigantic dragon-like being whose favourite past-time is taking baths in really big lakes (not ones with rocky bottoms, though; despite his size he's got sensitive skin and only lakes with sandy and/or muddy bottoms will do for him). Sometimes he accidentally steps on people, and that's presented with the kinda realism you seldom see in children's literature, but he pays for the funerals of every singe person he steps on, attends their funerals AND cries more than anyone else at the funerals as well. You tell me if you know someone who'd cry more at a stranger's funeral than said stranger's own relatives would, and cries just as much at _every_ stranger's funeral at that!
