Come visit London one day, we have a shop that has several fabric shops on it - it's called "Goldhawk Road". I haven't been there for some years, but now that I'm back in London (spent 2020 to 2023 with the family in Sydney, just recently came back here), and now that your videos have inspired me to start sewing again, I'm definitely going to make a trip there soon :)) you're so inspiring, thank you for your great work 💕
Your finds are so beautiful and so you! This blue linen fabric is so special. It was also so nice to follow your adventures in Nippori ! I recently purchased two japanese fabrics from Nani Iro and I was astonished with the quality. I also feel you with the sewing books, I have several from japanese creators and they are so inspiring x
Fabulous! This is the one I have been waiting for! I will be in Japan in October (I am in Oz) and I am planning on having two x half days in Nippori, looks like so much fun. I will be adding pattern books to my shopping list! Thanks Janelle.
Wow that looked amazing I’m so jealous, our fabric choices in Australia are very limited. Cloth Edit has beautiful fabric online they are in Queensland, lots of Japanese fabric at her store. Thank you for sharing your shopping day and please go again would love to see more. ❤
Omgosh what a dreamy adventure! I don't walk very well anymore, and I struggle in my wheelchair so I barely leave my house anymore. I'm really trying to overcome it. Anyway watching videos like this fill me with a sense of adventure and curiosity that helps. I love this! Thank you!
Me to with me it's chronic fatigue syndrome alongside a few other conditions so never know how long I am going to be awake and as a cup of coffee can suddenly feel like the weight of a bucket of water shopping and being outside finally became impossible 9 years ago I like you too get great joy out of the trips creators share on You tube.
@Lynette exactly how I feel, though it's all pretty new to me. I was hooked on "heygo" until they closed the app. It was such fun to stroll through a garden in Japan and the admire the architecture in Buenos Aires, or the ruins of Pompeii... churches in Italy! Castles in Scotland! All of the things I didn't think I could see or do, but with a guide to be my eyes and legs. 🥰 I'm so sorry you experience similar challenges, but I appreciate that you shared this with me. I don't know any people who share my curiosity about the world, but physically cannot pursue it. 🫱🏻🫲🏼
@savvy9 I have looked at my TV screen as my cinema my theatre my books my travel my creative stimulation When I watch a recent film I make sure I have snacks and get settled in. Only do that when I have been awake for more than hour for 2 days on the trot. We are still us inside.😊🤗👍
I was so looking forward to this vlog, and wow, Nippori is just amazing! I was born and spent my childhood in the middle east, and all the women in my family are talented in sewing. So, much of my clothes growing up were lovingly made for me by my mom, grandma and aunt. Being in Asia, many of the beautiful fabrics available to us were from Japan, and so I have very fond memories of my mom making me beautiful clothes with adorable prints, buttons and trim. A trip to Japan and Nippori is now on my bucket list. Also, I loved all your new fabric finds, especially that unique eyelet/broderie anglaise one.
This is the vlog I was waiting for! Thank you!! I live in southern Japan so I'm not able to go to Tokyo easily. I was saving up for a trip to Nippori but then I got laid off two months ago. I'll get there one day!!!
Oh, what a fairyland for a sewist! At first I thought a $500 budget sounded like a lot, but when I saw the shops, I wondered how in the world I would be able to stick to that low of a budget! Thanks for taking us along, it was so fun to see what is available there. You’re making me want to go to Japan more with every video!
Carol is jealous and I am too!! Us die hard cross stitchers always pay attention to the weave in everything. Yes, I am with you on doing your micros onto the brown check fabric. Your eyelet is over the moon!!! Glad you had a great day. p.s. I probably would have left the 5 levels of fabric shopping too.
I just love the Japanese pattern. Love that oversized look and well yes Luke you said you can just tell when something looks Japanese. Wish I had the patience to sew my own Japanese looks outfits. Looking forward to see you make something from those books.
I thought I was going to miss Nippori after becoming sick when we first arrived in Tokyo. But I got there on a very rainy overcast day. Bought 3 very Japanese inspired pieces of fabric, so was very very happy! Just realised it was only 6 days ago now, as I am home again. Thank you Janelle for letting me know about this amazing street. Highlight of my time in Tokyo!
Janelle, thank you so much for taking us fabric shopping with you in Japan, and giving me personally, an experience I will never know. Thanks to the filming skills of you and Matt I felt as though I was looking over your shoulder at all that exquisiteness! I do love your trims, buttons, and fabric choices......and those pattern books! 🐾🥰
Hi Janelle,I have been to Tokyo 3 months ago and I had a very similar experience with the big Tomato Shop and then i have found myself in the smaller one buying the same burnt orange -brown color linen :) I was influence by your aesthetic when I was buying it and the fabric is AMAZING! I sewed myself a draped sleeveless blouse and an a -line midi skirt and I feel so special every time I"m wearing it. Thank You for sharing It was so nice to go back to Nippori with You. Wish You all the best,Love from Poland.
There were some super cute jumpsuits in those sewing books during your flip through of them - I would love to see you make some of those on the channel! That first gingham fabric would be perfect for any of them. 😊 Also.... so envious of your shopping trip. My hoped-for 2020 Japan trip now just seems like a surreal fantastical dream, but I really enjoy these "diaries". 😊
11:42 I suggest you make the garment first, and then embroider squares one by one. That way you can still wear it out as you are continuously embellishing it. Plus, you won't have to worry about cutting into a square you worked so hard on when you pattern it out.
Thanks for the recommendation Janelle!! Went to Nippori last week and was gobsmacked... I had planned an afternoon for the street but only managed to cover 2 tomato buildings. The main one was really quite overwhelming! But I had so much fun... also, can we talk about how affordable the cotton trimmings are? In Spotlight, they go for $12/m but they were so affordable there!
I'm learning alot I never knew Japan had so much fabric. You should buy some silk. Here in the US we have mostly quilting cotton, I wish we had rayon challis but I don't want to buy online without feeling it. Have a peaceful week. thank you for your vlogs
I love your videos! Wondering if you can speak little bit of Japanese language? In this video, you said "daijoubu" to the shop person, and it sounded very natural. I started sewing few months ago here in Australia, and I didn't know that my country has such a nice place to buy fabrics! Next time I go back to Japan, I will definitely go there! Thank you for introducing me about Nippori!
I can speak a tiny bit. I did 3 months of lessons before coming to Japan and have been studying on my own for about a year. I can understand and read the language more than I can speak it though 😊
Fabric stores are heaven to me!! Can never get enough! Love all your choices. The cross stitch accent material is wonderful and the off white material, here in America, it’s called eyelet material. Thank you for taking us along.
Thank you for this amazing video, especially also for sharing your experience of being overwhelmed with all these beautiful things. Like honestly this is exactly me when I go shopping. Just feels good to know Im not the only one and its sometimes just fine and alright to go out without buying anything instead of buying something you will regret. 😊
I LOVE the white fabric! It totally looks like cute pieces of toast or loaf cake to me! Super cute! I hope you return and pick up a few quirky or whimsical fabrics like the tomato buttons you found. Japanese is full of quirk and whimsy 😊
Great finds! You managed a balance between things you know you like but with new and interesting elements. It’ll be fun seeing you bring your style sensibility to those more avant-garde patterns!
Hello there that brown gingham, could be quilted and made in to a gorgoues bed spread, with your micro, embroidery around the edges and centre. What a brilliant choice of fabrics. You can't fail
Thankyou Janelle, I’m definitely going to get myself to Nippori next year! I would describe current Japanese pattern book fashion as sorta Lagenlook with a dash of cottagecore; roomy and cute. That said, you need to be careful with pattern and fabric choices with those fashion styles if you don’t have a waif-like figure - I’m size16 and my first Japanese pattern book dress made me look like a floor rug, just one big slab of pattern. I now use much larger prints or textured plains for these patterns. Finally, I feel you with the overwhelm at Tomato store, great idea to go to the smaller ones.
Lovely Japanese fabric shopping day video! I just spent 3 days in transit through Paris. I went to the fabric coupons stores the first day. Took a "break day" sightseeing then went back for a second day. I really enjoyed the second day and found some amazing viscose twill which I bought in several colours. It did help to let the overwhelming choice breathe for a day. I am now thinking about another reason to go to Japan!
My public library system has several of these Japanese sewing pattern books. They're great. I've traced of several of the complete books. They're so easy to hack between books also. Using several details from one to another.
I would love to go to Nippori fabric shopping! Here in Hawaii it is quite difficult to find quality knits and linens. You’ve got quite a haul, cant wait to see what you’re going to make. Thanks for sharing! 18:25
I've been to Nippori 3 times. I was overwhelmed by the larger 🍅 store. My hubby leaves me there before they open and comes back for lunch. Near Kamata station, is also an amazing 5 floor fabric store called Yuzawaya. You can get a 5% off all purchases if you get a members card. The checkout lady did this for me last time. They also have Art supplies to die for.
I'm so jealous too! I will probably never visit Japan, but that place would certainly be on my list. Fabric stores is just so much mire fun than online buying. Thanks for taking us along. Ps. Which fabric was the one that Matt found?
Loved this video and I would be overwhelmed just like you too. Your content is amazing and binge worthy and can’t wait to see your end design with the new fabric.
Thank you for this video. I've been struggling finiding fabric shops with good choices in Japan cause crafts aren't as poplular as you'd think. Most fabric is ghastly. I guess Hands is for emergencies. Nippori doesn't seem to be everywhere. Is it just in Tokyo? Also, if I find a Tomato, does that mean, I'll find a fabric shop in it? Gosh, if you aren't in Tokyo...you don't have a lot of anything. It's a good thing I came across your video. I hardly go to Tokyo cause it's not great for me, but I'll know next time I'm stuck there, what to get.
You could spend weeks getting round all those shops. I love gingham and add some ruffles and you’ve got perfection. 5hanks for the brilliant look into the Japanese way of life.❤️❤️❤️
Love the idea of the crossstitch fabric cross it will truly be a unique piece how ever long it takes, you will be surprised how quick small images get done.
I love my neighbourhood Tomato stores but over the years the prices have jumped up and the 100 Y racks offer is not as nice as it used to be. I love also Nagato where they always have sales of very interesting fabrics, enough for a top or skirt in quality material. The button shop, Kumagai, have gorgeous French beauties, expensive but some time you only need one to add to a coat collar.
Official fabric envy! The broderie is adorable. I can see a suit, with a swing jacket and a slim skirt. And a linen (caramel) top? In the past I came across Japanese fabrics that I loved but were only available in 35 inch width. Looks like that is not an issue. Thank you for the adventure. Happy stitching.
We bought the most beautiful fabric and buttons in Hiroshima. Unfortunately Spotlight is the major store where I Iive, but there are lovely 3 patchwork shops.
You had way more self control than me, I would have been so overwhelmed I would buy everything I see 😂I LOOOVE those sewing books! I have heaps just to look at the beautiful pictures, but the few designs I've made from them are just the most comfy pieces of clothing that exist. I use a wheelchair so unfortunately you can't appreciate all the little details that go into the otherwise simple designs but at least I feel like a linen marshmallow cloud.
Thank you for the video. I really like the Broderie Anglaise fabric that you bought. I live in Tokyo and would like to know at which shop you got it from. Thank you!
Japan is not a fast fashion society. Fabric is of the highest quality, they even make their own denim. Jeans run about $2000.00. They use indigo dyes. This comment is for those who ask what the difference is.
Really enjoyed your vlog, shopping for fabrics in Japan is now on my bucket list. Wonderful selection you chose, especially the brown with the cross stitch squares. Could you please advise on the title of the pattern books, especially the one with the lady in the dress on the cover. Thank you Janelle 😊
Oh, that one with all the printed denim hanging on the walls with the old man on the second floor was one of my faves! So many small prints for making doll clothes. :D
I was wonderfully overwelmed and I did spend more than I expected. Then i did the same in Kyoto. Gosh. I got my dearest fabric scissors at a good price for japanese steel
Hi Janelle- love to watch you sew and talk about sewing. Are the pattern books in Japanese only? Are there instructions in english also? Wish I could see your burnt orange in person- looks so good on you.
Oh, my! More reason to visit Japan! I would need a container to get everything I wanted back home! (I felt that way when I visited fabric streets in Hong Kong/New Territory--but that was 10-12 years ago... Sadly I don't think HK would be as nice to visit anymore 😢).
Im not jealous!! Ah who am I kidding, holy cow those fabric shops looked amazing!!!! Beautiful fabric haul too!! Can't wait to see what your going to make with your beautiful buys!!! Also those books, ihave about 5/6 Japanese sewing books and im in love with them, cant wait to see what patterns you use!!xx
I live in Nagoya and keep going to Yuzawaya, which is a bit pricy. I came across this video accidentally Now that I know there’s a thing called “fabric street” somewhere in Japan, I will definitely check around. Oh! And I also love your idea of mixing sewing with cross stitching. Thank you.
