I don't know why but these videos are my favorite. I study tailoring and I had a problem with fabric because it has to be sustainable and i was watching this and i totally forgot about fabric thrifting.
I’m so happy I found your channel, I’ve been learning to sew on my grandma’s ancient sewing machine and she’s decided to buy me my own machine for Christmas. I’m very excited to start making some of my own things soon! 🥰
PLEASE make what you describe as "an OTT 80S taffeta/tulle ballgown dress" from that vintage pattern 😍😍😍 I'm totally feeling that vibe rn and would love to see how you approach it. I've been sewing for almost a year now and find your channel so inspiring (and also reassuring because you are so kind and relatable!!). Greetings from Cape Town and thank you for your wonderful videos! 🧵🧶🪡
You're not wrong about the gingham at spotlight. I literally stood in front of all the gingham for 30mins umming and ahhing about which colour/check size/texture. Landed on the most beautiful buttery yellow colour with the teeniest check size gingham in that crinkly texture. So excited to make a little baby dress and headband out of it!
The fabric that seemed to scream, “make me into an overall mini dress” was the plaid that you bought from Spotlight. Bib pocket, braces, etc. For summer you could wear little light tops and tees, then winter match it with your roll necks! Loved the linen gingham too! Susan
Great fabrics and patterns you purchased . I can’t believe you found New Look 6266, I’m pretty sure this is the pattern my mum used to make my sister’s bridesmaid dresses for me and my other sister in a heavy peach fabric. I still have the dress in the attic from 1989.
I love these videos! Every time we come along with you, it's like hanging out with a friend. You have such great taste in fabric and always give me inspiration for my own projects.
Love your choices and esthetic. In the US we call the large check print you purchased in black and white, buffalo check, an obvious reference to the giant western mammals most at home in Montana, Wyoming and the Plains states. Thought I'd share a bit of regional wardrobe/ fabric nomenclature. 😉 Thanks for the vicarious shopping trip and your including thrifted items. I have vintage sheets and tablecloths waiting for me to pullout my machine. I can't wait to see your custom blanket coat.
Fun finds! I just started sewing this year and use only thrifted fabric. Originally I used thrifted fabric because I was not very good. If the project came out awful, oh well, at least I learned something. I also started with thrifted garments. I cut them apart and used the fabric. Most of my supplies are thrifted. Buttons, bias tape, zippers, zippers and more zippers. I probably have too many zippers! I am so surprised how quickly the supplies accumulated. My fabric stash is almost out of control! Once I found a huge tub and half of a garbage bag of vintage patterns totalling $15. So that's in my stash too. Oh boy.
Dying to know what you will make with the black buffalo check(as we call it here in the Northwest)! I do LOVE that and even have curtains in my laundry room, table runners for the table etc in black buffalo check. So will wait for that in a garment!
Loved your fabric choices. The texture of the blanket you've bought is because of use not bobbling.I have a similar one from my parents, you can leave it as it is or, gently, brush it to give a longer, softer texture. Either way, it'll look gorgeous as a coat or bedspread.Sizes in the past were much smaller than they are now,so,a pattern from the 70's/80's in a size 10 would equate to a size 12/14 today.i love your style and I'm looking forward to your makes.
No way I got 2meters of that green and yellow floral print from spotlight last week to. And I planned on making the wrap shirt with Ur pattern with it. Yay now I'm even more excited 😃
The big check gingham is called buffalo check here in the USA. Your fabric selection is beautiful but quite a bit higher in price. I really love your videos. I share your love for yellows, mustards and earth tones.❤️
Looks like it's time to call into Spotlight again! I love the giant B&W gingham and the retro print fabric you bought there. I can't wait to see that fabulous blanket made up into a coat. Back in the 80s, I had a duffle coat made from a Navajo blanket design fleece and I loved it! The colours were so rich and the style of coat suited my needs perfectly. Despite having purchase the coat at Myers, I never once saw anyone else wearing one. The patterns you picked up brought back lots of memories too. The ruffled wedding dress in particular as I had a few dresses in a similar style way back when.
I believe the black and white check gingham is also known as Buffalo check or plaid. I was also in Spotlight on Saturday but in Adelaide. All I got was 1.6 metres of a stretch grey, for a maxi skirt. Hubby, however, got a ton of embroidery cotton. No, he's not into embroidery but the thread is perfect for fishing flies which he makes.
NGL I think if you had a super light weight bright gingham fabric that puff sleeve/pant "sleep set" could actually be a super cute matching day set. Especially with some nude platform sandals.
I love your fabric hauls! I’ve always heard that large gingham called Buffalo plaid or Buffalo check, if you’re ever looking for more of it 😊 Also that blanket would make an amazing bomber jacket!!
Hi Janelle. Discovered your channel today. I am hooked! My mother grew up during The Depression and women used whatever type of fabric they could lay their hands on no matter where it came from. I love your take on older patterns. The rusty spotting on the patterns is called "foxing" in the book vintage book trade. I have never seen an iron like yours! Brilliant! Happy sewing!
Your fabric shopping videos are always lush! 😍 You are so lucky to find so much beautiful stuff. Yesterday I went to a charity shop and found an XXL man's shirt in a lovely lilac striped good quality cotton fabric, which I plan to refashion into a blouse. Nowhere near as easy as using a table cloth or sheet, but very satisfying when it works out 😁 Keep taking us with you when you go on your "op shopping" trips!
Love your selection of fabrics. I shop at spotlight alot and very impressed with their selection of fabrics. Love your video's and can't wait to see your makes. Queensland, Australia 🌺😊🇦🇺
Hello, I enjoy watching , just knowing you took fabrics to a mirror to find the best suited, something didn't even think to do ....instead of just buying random pieces 👍 I am loving the blanket , I do hope you do make your coat .....that gave me idea for my granddaughter... So thankyou very much 😊 all the best 💝
I love all your videos but this one was super! Can't wait for the blanket coat!!! Hey, you could make the pyjamas out of the fabric roll you got.. when you were showing the roll I thought about pj's and then when you showed the pattern, I could totally picture it lol. Great fabrics.. loved them all and of course the patterns! Thanks for sharing Janelle. Oh and YES matching outfits for chrissy!!
I loved the floral fabric the most - so pretty! I noticed that the patterns you purchased were in quite a few different sizes. I would love to hear about how you size up or down when making patterns that are in the wrong size - I'm too scared to work it out for myself at the moment!
That circle tablecloth pattern is enchanting! You've inspired me; I got some bedsheets from Goodwill (US op shop) for $1.50 with a stripey rose pattern I've made into a dress for my girlfriend. Also got some thick pink polka dot cloth (4+ metres) for around $6. Not brave enough to get fresh, fancy cloth yet...
I love your videos!! Always amazed by the fabrics you find. When I walk into spotlight, i’m always overwhelmed and never quite know what to do with each fabric. Do you think you could do a intro to fabrics video? Like explaining weights, drape, materials, and what fabric you would use for a dress vs pants vs shirt etc?
Hi Janelle. Love going shopping with you. Just wish we had such lovely op shops over here in South Africa. I really like the black and white gingham fabric, it's adorable and so unique. I'm crazy about the empire waist dress pattern so can't wait for your tutorial. I'm in love with the table cloth, the style and colours are soo eye catching and pretty. Janelle, would you ever consider make a simple easy elasticated straight leg pants with side pockets tutorial in cotton or linen? Thank you for sharing another amazing video. Remain blessed xxx
What a great idea on using the blanket to make a coat, when you bought it I thought that would make a fleece or a jacket, but your vision for the coat you saw is inspirational x
I’m so inspired by you! I’ve never been brave enough to try making clothes on my own but I’m planning on starting this year, your videos have really helped put it into perspective!
Everything is beautiful 😍 We don’t have thrift shops as much interesting in France, this one is so tidy and with much beautiful stuff , love your sélection 👌🏻
Hi Janelle. Love your op shopping videos. My first thought when you were flicking through the patterns was about how great they are displayed. I usually just grab a box of patterns and go over to the furniture section and find a chair to sit in while I flip through them when I’m op shopping. My favourite fabric was the one with the stitching detail. Enjoy the rest of you Sunday afternoon.🌸
OMG there's so beautiful fabrics in this shop. You're so lucky. In France, I can't find this kind of large gingham but only really small and classic one.
Jelly of the discovery of a roll of fabric at an op shop. The second store looks like Hornsby salvos to me, but don’t think it is as the spotlight isn’t the same as round here.
Glad to see you out and shopping. The news about Austrailia here in the US sounds like you are all in lockdown. Stay safe out there Janelle! Your sweet creative spirit cheers us.
Aw thanks lovely! We’ve been pretty safe throughout the entire pandemic here in Tasmania (isolation has its benefits sometimes!), but I feel for the other states/countries that have had it really rough 💔
I love op-shopping for patterns (I sew costumes) so haven't purchased new patterns in ages. I recently needed a new pattern, and they cost $25 !!!!!! And I thought $5 for a second hand pattern was expensive ! (Most patterns cost 50c to $1). Spotlight is also my go to for fabric.
I got the same plaid fabric on their 40% off week the colour of mine is whit and light pinky beige I am going to make the Hope dress, can't wait to see what you make.
Love watching all your videos, but especially the Op shop ones, I love all the unusual fabrics you find! I always look in the charity shops here in the U.K. for fabric too! 😊
Oh my gosh, we have such similar taste!! I’ve created a smock dress from the orange plaid fabric and love it - such an easy number for summer. I would LOVE to see you make a long tiered skirt with the black check fabric, like the Marle Dusty Skirt 😍😍
Cute colors. Thanks for taking us along with you. If you do make a coat from that blanket please give a detailed tutorial. I would love how to make one
Hey Janelle, I love your video’s and I really enjoy going fabric shopping with you. Quick tip for storing bulky fabrics: get one or two of those vacuum bags (you know the ones where you vacuum seal it with a vacuum cleaner). I use them for my vintage wool blankets since I only use them in the winter.
That blouse pattern would look so good with some of that spotlight gingham! All of those checks were def my favorite. I picked up some for myself for a queens gambit style pinafore for the winter months. Can’t wait to see what you do!
Such lovely fabrics. I do so love the black and white gingham. Can’t wait to see what you make from all. The coat idea I just can’t imagine how you will do it but I am excited to see what it will look like. Really I never thought about out using curtains, sheets, etc. to make clothing. You are so gifted. TFS.
Hi Janelle! You could make the Hovea Curve Jacket & Coat Pattern by Megan Nielsen or the all well cardigan coat by All Well Workshop with the blanket. Love All the fábrics ❤️ Here where I Live, we don’t have op shops with fabrics 😞
I adore the op shop blanket Janelle and I think you were lucky to find so many patterns. I have never been that successful yet, usually just stuffed in a shoebox and scarce as hen's teeth ....if there are any at all! Spotlight is my favourite fabric store and I love all the ginghams, particularly the textured ones, and any design that comes in linen! Looking forward to your amazing creations, you are going to be sew busy!🥰
