It's not Dave it's Kurt that overdubbed the harmony as stated by the sing mixer in the studio when they recorded this song and Kurt also double tracked his lead vocals
Blak Linkgaming I've heard multiple different sources stating it's grohl, but I'll look into it more I guess. It really doesn't sound like him. But maybe you're right. Maybe it's on a plain I'm thinking of?
Dave's backup vocals are AMAZING. Kurt's vocals are of course top notch, But Dave REALLY kicks up the intensity with his backing vocals. Nirvana lives on inside, man.
I always thought he said, "Don't know what it means" on the Nevermind version, but I always sing, "Knows not what it means." Now I hear him saying, "Knows not what it means" clearly.
What the fuck how did he do that, it sounds like “don’t know what it means” on the record but you can hear “knows not what it means” clearly here and you can hear it if you listen closely on the record. Weird
And this was what cemented Dave into Nirvana. Not only could he beat his drums like they owed him money but he harmonized with Kurt like two coats of paint. Honestly to the core Nirvana listener the pair are asimilar to three Beatles backing a lead. PURELY PERFECT.
+mprater86 I know! so good (for Dave Grohl). I mean let's face it, Grohl sucks. but he sounds good doing back up vox on this song because Kurt already laid out the structure for him
They are. It's Beatles-esque and more the way their vocals (sound) and harmonies (notes) worked together. It would have been interesting if Kurt would've utilized Dave's harmonies on In Utero.
I never realized how stereo and nuked his vocals were on this track. They even got a little out of phase thing going, which was more popular in the later 90s/early 2000s. Richer production than I thought
Ringroop 1 Lol i just watched this video that had to do with a short satan clip and i thought this had to do with it. But ahh backing vocals what an discovery
Yeah, those vocals are way up there. Well beyond what most people can do without going into falsetto. He performed them incredibly and it seems like some kind of serendipity that his and Kurt's voices blended so well.
Yeah they are really high. There was no way he could pull it off live AND drum. This is one Nirvana song that was never quite as good live..just because the recorded version is so GOOD.
Well for most males who aren't schooled in that level of singing, it's high. And not in falsetto, as well. He's belting above Cobain who's already singing pretty high.
this track is the main proving point of how Dave's singing worked so well with Kurt's, his harmonies and backup vocals on the Unplugged set were amazing as well
Rock Nation Radio He's ALWAYS said "knows not." It still astounds me how many people don't know this. I've never been good at understanding his lyrics, but that one has always sounded like knows not.
elizabeth ford Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. But after he says "Knows not what it means when I say yeahhhh..." He hums to tune of the guitar which is the six "Hmmm"'s that you hear.
I saw a doc on this. Butch Vig had both Kurt and Dave double their parts. It's great, way better than the digital perfection in a lot of rock today. The doc is on you tube somewhere. The making of Nevermind or something like that.
Everyone who's complaining about what that noise is at 2:23, it's Dave! If you look up In Bloom Dave vocals, you will know. This video i'm talking about is a video of Dave's harmonies only.
Could you imagine Kurt and Dave making a song together today? Or even featuring on each other's albums right now? Damn, the possibilities that we will never be able to hear.
This song and the one song by a7x that really featured the revs vocals alongside m shadows remind me of eachother. Dave grohl really carried on Kurt's legacy and created his own.
i've made a fun little activity for myself where i take your isolated tracks [guitar, drums, bass, vocals] then i put them all together to complete the song. it's so fun everyone should try it hehe :}
I was just listening to the song and realized there was a background voice, and I thought kurt applied some weird octave effects to his voice, but who knew it was dave all along. Pretty cool
For some reason the guitar, drums and bass are in my head when they are singing, and when this song came out, it was Chad Channing, so the background vocals, on the record album, are Chad, I’m pretty sure.
