An interview with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic from Nirvana on Triple J Radio at ABC Studios in Sydney, Australia. This interview has been circulating for a few years, but I found this copy on SoundCloud and it is of much better quality than the versions most people have already heard. This was broadcast by Triple J a few years back and includes an introduction by one of the DJs.

I'm surprised the interviewer deleted the interview. It probably didn't go at all how she imagined but this is one of the more animated and energetic interviews I've heard. They sounded to be in good spirits and a bit hyper but also bored.

That was cool that she played "Turnaround" though.

Blast from the past. I just looked her up and the article also mentioned Mikey Robins and the Sandman - I'd almost forgotten listening to them!

We forget how young they were here. Dave was like 23. If I suddenly and unexpectedly became hugely famous at that age I’m sure I would say a bunch of stupid shit and on a really bad day be a bit of an obnoxious tool to interviewers.

@@bigbowlowrong4694 Let's not overlook the professionalism that bands like The Beatles showed when they were interviewed at a young age, too. I know it was customarily different back then, but they used humour and intelligence in all their interviews. Not once did they act like stunned mullets or gee-golly children. They were always intelligent with a very sly Northern sensibility to them. And professional

it probably felt like shit at the time, without the historical context to know that this band were going to be over in 2 years and the arguably last of the really big rock bands

How is a 10,000 capacity gig "underground"?
@rageingrhino
@rageingrhino 3 года назад
The 10,000 capacity gig was a music festival and they were not the headline act. The other shows they played were in pubs with a few hundred in the audience.
@xwhite2020
@xwhite2020 3 года назад
@@rageingrhino Not true. They played Surfers Beer garden (which is a big venue) with Violent Femmes. It wasnt Big Day Out Festival. Just the two bands, outdoor and was far more than a few hundred people. Kurts voice was shot but it was good none the less.

given the amount of people that went to gigs in the early 90s, 10,000 isn't a huge crowd. this is when the 'underground' hit mainstream attention

yeah, 'love will tear us apart' used to win the hottest 100 every year (when it was from songs from every year) before 'smells like teen spirit' won in '92

She clearly didn't realize how big they already were in the states saying "we'll hear about those in Melody Maker," which was an underground Brit magazine one step above a fanzine. Nope, try Rolling Stone, lady!

Melody Maker was HUGE in the UK, anything but an underground magazine. It was one of the main music publications there.

She did a horrible job at interviewing them, a different approach would have been nice, should of let them continue talking about what they wanted instead of just talking over them.

I think she did a great job. Not Dave, but Kurt and Krist in particular were doing something that bands do sometimes which is dissolve into their own little world where they find their in jokes to be insanely hilarious and show little consideration for anyone else around them. I love Nirvana but I can understand how this woman may have been left feeling that Kurt and Krist were jerks.
