The extended vowel sound that you were asking about is called a howl or a yodel. Very common in old cowboy country music songs. Hope that helps you understand
Nirvana's MTV 'Unplugged' performance is considered one of the greatest in the network's & rock history... It was also a different format, because bands and artist who did the show would be filmed and recorded playing their hits w/ acoustic guitars, and they would do a few takes and then air the best performances. Nirvana refused to do that - they would play the 'Unplugged' set in 1 go like a regular concert. Unlike other bands, Nirvana would play their obscure songs that no one knew, like... 'About a girl'... 'On a plain'... 'Pennyroyal Tea'... and cover songs that were not famous at the time by The Vaselines, Meat Puppets, and David Bowie. This cover of blues artist Leadbelly "Where did you sleep last night" was the final song of the set... the MTV producers asked Kurt to do an encore, but he refused ("I can't top that one," he replied). There were also issues when Nirvana rehearsed for 'Unplugged'... Kurt was unhappy w/ how the band sounded and kept telling drummer Dave Grohl that he was hitting the drums too hard. Worried that Kurt would cancel the show, a producer handed Grohl a pair of brushes to play the drums with, and Kurt immediately lit up. That was the sound he wanted... and the set came together very quickly after that.
You left out the part where his stomach issues were really bad and he was going to cancel the concert but someone found a guy to get some Heroin and shot up before the performance to kill the pain.
He adds a small tiny twist of yodeling into his vocals on this song. This is the BEST of all the MTV's unplugged performances. Only "slightly" edging out Alice in Chains. Pure MAGNIFICANCE.
One of the most haunting performances of all time. You can hear the pain in his voice. Kurt was so good at putting emotion in his singing. The MTV unplugged concert series are just amazing. You need to check out more MTV unplugged from Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Eric Clapton.
This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔 PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance🖤
I heard the news of Kurt's death while in class at high school, I broke down crying, ran out of class and ran home to see if the news was true. I cried for days. Nirvana changed my life. I still tear up thinking about him now. This song is hard for me to listen to. Any fanatical Nirvana fan will know why.
I 100% agree except I was still in middle school. Unfortunately I think we’ve lost something in our memory of Kurt. This video and this performance gets a lot of focus because of the pain on display, and rightfully so. It was heartbreaking. But what made Kurt so special to those of us who were there for that awesome time was the everything on display in this performance. His brilliance, his pain, but also what a shy silly dork he was when he wasn’t shining through performance.
Kurt put twang into his voice in this song. He had such a rough, raspy voice but it had so much emotion into it. His music had a profound affect on me growing up. I was 14 when Kurt was found dead (I do not believe he committed suicide) and it rattled me so much because I felt his music through & through my entire body, deep into my soul. There will never be another man like him and he is sorely missed!!!
He was a very very very down to the ground person, humble , a truly gentle heart and you can tell it by the way he out his pain and emotions in his music, specially this track
The guitar Kurt's playing sold for 6 million.. He didn't scream like a professional singer would.. perfect pitch etc.. he screamed like he was being murdered.. it was real, scary and beautiful ❤
It's really cool that Dave Ghrol was the drummer of Nirvana, and when Kurt Cobain passed away, Dave formed one of the biggest groups in music called The foo fighters!
One of the most haunting performances of all time. You can hear the pain in his voice. Kurt was so good at putting emotion in his singing. My fav song fro. This concert is Man Who Sold The World. It is a David Bowie cover but it blows the original out of the park. The MTV unplugged concert series are just amazing. You need to check out more MTV unplugged from Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Eric Clapton.
The entire MTV Unplugged Session with Nirvana was absolutely incredible. Try to watch it if you can. no reaction, just for the music. Also try to remember the face of the drummer :-) You might see him again in some other reactions.
had this album on cassette as a teen. First time I heard those blasting power notes, I felt like a was being electrocuted by emotion. Still gets me to this day.
Thank you for not cutting the video short like many reactors tend to do! I love seeing people's reaction to the autograph signing. It really shows you how chill and appreciative he was
RIP Kurt Cobain. An incredible cover done by an incredible artist. A friend of mine saw Nirvana in concert while he was in High School. He swears, to this day, that Kurt had the loudest voice he's ever heard.
Kurt, Chester, Chris ... so many of the great ones have left us. Thanks for reacting to this. I hope you can take a look at Chris Cornell doing "Nothing Compares 2 U" - the SiriusXM version, its amazing!
Bisscute i highly suggest you watch the whole concert . This is still the best unplugged concert to me .. Its worth watching it all.. Great reaction , and thank you for doing this song . have an amazing day .
@@BisscuteReacts Yes !! epic full concert. Even if its not for youtube . its one of those got to see concerts in full . I obviously have been a fan for a long time ,i think you would truly enjoy it . Once again have a great day , and thank you for responding . Cheers
Will never be another Kurt Cobain, not the most technical singer but he had that unique voice to where he didn't have to be. He was one of those you just had to be alive to know kinda guys but it is awesome to see he's still getting some love. He was compared to John Lennon lyrically and changed the sound of rock. Very important impactful person
I always think of the Irony of Kurt talking about how expensive Lead Belly’s guitar is and low & behold the exact one he’s playing with recently sold for $6+million at auction..:)
Kurt had the ability to do a small yodel in this song. I recently watched a Top 10 Europe where a young lady performed an entire yodeling song. Amazing thing to see these days.
"Pennyroyal tea", "Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam" and "All apologies" are other highlights from this show - or rather the whole show was one long, hauntingly beautiful and bittersweet highlight.
Love how u paused in the exact place before he got to the harder part, I had the biggest smile thinking "oh she's gonna get a nice surprise when she unpauses" :D I think the musical term for the sound he made with his voice is "that kewl kurt cobain voice sound", or probably not but it sounds grungy :)
The increase in tempo throughout the song I believe is showing how the conversation with the woman in the song is going…it starts off calmly but as the singer/narrator isn’t pleased with the response he’s getting from the woman in the song it becomes a scream at the end…this whole Nirvana Unplugged concert might be worth checking out…it has a lot good performances and interactions with the crowd…
Kurt Cobain was like a 90s version of John Lennon. So raw, so authentic, so unpretentious. Rock needed to get back to that after it got real cheesy in the 80s.
well, i have something to say: you, miss bisscute, you are the sweetest little thing, i have ever seen in my very dark life, it's always like a little sparkle of sunshine, to watch one of your reactions... greetings from germany...
@@BisscuteReacts i Do also have a good Suggestion for reacting, it's the Band Heilung, which means healing in english, the title of one of their newest Songs is anoana, i think you will love this Song so much as i do
I grew up knowing this song when it was called 'Black Girl' by The Four Pennies in 1964. It was also known as 'In The Pines' & 'My Girl' too, way back in the old days :)
In country music, the sound in his voice you’re referring to would be called “twang.” Nirvana’s unplugged album is still probably my all time favorite. Thanks for a great reaction!
Hiya! I'm new here but I think the sound you were asking about in the beginning was a yodel. The technique really made a comeback in 90's grunge and alternative rock.
The high pitch sound at the end of most of the verse lines is generally called a yoddle. A yoddle is when you quickly jump up to falsetto (head voice) from your normal tone (chest voice) while skipping most of the notes in-between. Kurt Cobain was great at adding slight yoddles while singing to increase the emotional impact.
The irony of him complaining about how much they wanted for Leadbelly's guitar, when the guitar he is playing here sold for 12 times that a few years ago.
It's funny you recognize this vocal technique Kurt is doing, you are right alot of singers do it. It's almost a yodel flip into a type of falsetto, very good ear you have. 👏
I’ve always wondered if Kurt even told his own bandmates he was going to start screaming like that. Even they might not have known. And you can teach yourself to sing. I’m a self-taught vocalist. It takes much longer than vocal coaching or singing lessons, but you can do it with enough time. Search your own music collection for voices to emulate.
So big suprise to me after years of thinking this was his only performance of this song if you search on youtube he actually plays this song at the end of a few concerts in 93 before this unplugged show. This had been a favorite song of kurt for awhile and the band had definitely heard him do it multiple times
The vocal thing you’re talking about is called a yodel or a “flip”. It’s when a singer flips from one vocal technique to another (chest voice to head voice) really quickly.
