They wanted Nirvana to do an encore after this, but Kurt refused saying he had left everything he had last during that last song. And there is no doubt about that, this song is powerful.

I believe in that moment at the end when he opens his eyes right before the very last verse we catch a glimpse of him expending the last of his creative and psychic energy. Its as if he feels and sees it leaving him. It's so f*cking beautiful it hurts.

When Kurt pauses before singing the last word, he takes a breath and opens his eyes. I feel like we can see the true Kurt then, right down into his soul. And every reactor does the same thing you did, continue watching after the song ends. I can’t take my eyes off of him. I believe he loved making music, writing and some performing. But the fame monster hit Nirvana hard and I think he was definitely an introvert and hated the limelight.

Alot of people talk about the end where he looked up and had completely lost himself in the song. And I agree, it's an amazing moment. But the way he screams shiver in the middle of the last verse was a true preview to that moment. Showed how emotional Kurt was getting. He really was feeling it, and there could have been no crowd at that point and he wouldn't have realized. Wouldn't have mattered honestly. I've never seen Kurt get that lost in a song. He was dealing with some serious shit at this point. I remember watching it live in awe of what I was seeing, and I was only a teen at that time This performance will still be dissected years after I've left this earth.

I remember reading an interview once with someone who was there that night, who said that those last few seconds were so haunting to see in person, that when Kurt opened his eyes like that at the end his stare was so piercing that it was like he’d been possessed for a moment. They recorded this whole set in a single take, which no other artist had done so far for an MTV Unplugged set, and Kurt was in the middle of withdrawal at the time and unwell. He refused to go back out for an encore, believing that he couldn’t better the performance of this song. It was Andrew Wallace Chamings who said that, found the interview. “For the final line, "I would shiver the whole night through," Cobain jumps up an octave, forcing him to strain so far he screams and cracks. He hits the word "shiver" so hard that the band stops, as if a fight broke out at a sitcom wedding. Next he howls the word "whole" and then does something very strange in the brief silence that follows, something that's hard to describe: he opens his piercingly blue eyes so suddenly it feels like someone or something else is looking out under the bleached lank fringe, with a strange clarity.”

@@claireboddey3273 yeah Claire, I am know all about withdrawal. First hand. Having watched that unplugged show more than I can count I don't see Kurt with flu like symptoms which is the mellowest of withdrawal symptoms. He's not wiping his nose, his eyes are not puffy, easy to tell. Anything beyond that and there is no way he pulls off that performance. You can't believe everything you read when the signs are obvious. Most people around him probably had no clue what was going on. He was either medicated enough to do it or not on anything. Let me guess though, you read his autobiography from thst pinhead cross? Love wanted everyone to think Kurt was high all the time. It added to the mystic. Watch Staley on aic unplugged. Now there is a guy high on dope.

This song is my favourite Nirvana performance - I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. IMO the best performance is ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he pauses & looks up at before the last line…..OMG - haunting is an understatement! Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame……what a wonderful legacy he left us.....I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔

At the start, Kurt tells the story about buying Lead Belly's guitar for 500,000 Dollars. The guitar he used for this performance recently sold at auction for 6 Million Dollars!

I would not exaggerate with these emotions. Kurt was just a great singer. He could sing the phone book, and it would be emotional and perfect.

That look into the crowd at 6:38 its shivering!!! he passes most of the song with his eyes closed and at the end of the song he simply open up his eyes and give that look into the crowd like a statement! just the look tells more then an entire performance from most of the "singers" now a days...if you don´t get emotional when you look at this video you are a rock, a cold rock!!

Kurt was asked to do another song and he refused saying as long as he lives he will never top this and he never did. He passed away 6 months later. Same people think this concert was a farewell to the world. Their are little signs like the white funeral flowers and candles. I was in high school the day he died. Such a strange feeling seeing so many sad mourning teens. It took a long time for people to accept that he was really gone. Like Chris Cornell and Chester, he was one in a million and will never be forgotten. RIP Kurt.
