This was originally a folk song with some variations dating back to the 1870s. Most think the song "In the Pines" originated from two different folk songs: "In The Pines" and "The Longest Train".
@actionjaxon5392
@actionjaxon5392 2 года назад
I've read and heard the same. The story I have heard the most is that a woman's husband is hit by a train and she hangs herself out in the woods because she couldn't handle the loss. The song itself is written from her fathers perspective due to the fact that she never returned home and is subsequently hanging in the pines. When looking at the song from the perspective of it being about someone committing suicide the fact that Kurt chose it to end this set makes it an even more haunting performance.

Lead belly was an African American 12 string guitarist in the 30s and 40s hes awesome to listen to. He’s played lots of other instruments also. He was a folk and blues guy and Kurt Cobain would speak about him from time to time in interviews and with friends. Lots of the unplugged tour featured songs from other artist he liked. Him and pat smear got together and just picked songs they liked listening to or group up with from his record collection and decided to play them on the unplugged special. So he’s referring to his guitar at the beginning which was offered to him for that insane price at the time.

This song dates back to the 1800s. This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔 PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance🖤

He's doing yodels to make his voice sound like that, especially when he says, I would shiver the whole night through

This is a great cover...it led me to seek out and listen to the original "Black girl" by leadbelly. It's great. I can see why Kurt was inspired by it.

I think the lyric “black girl” fits better as there’s no confusion he’s speaking of “my girl”. By saying “black girl” it’s no longer personal and falls more inline with folk and the storytelling that goes with it.

I remember when Unplugged was first aired but I didn't see until a couple of months afterwards. I wasn't a fanatic, but Nirvana was on the radio a lot and I had one of their CDs. Kurt had a unique talent for being alt yet still able to crank out melodies that had wide appeal. I was so blown away by this performance. There was a whole side of Kurt and the band no one knew existed (except the lucky few who saw them do this set live beforehand.) Having Kurt leave us right after experiencing this intimate performance turned his death, that for many people who hadn't ever met him, into a real gut punch. Did anyone else watch MTV's 24-hour vigil and tributes? My girl and were up the entire night watching it, as were a lot of others. A lot of people were in shock --- and yet the worst was yet to come. There was so little info at first ---most assumed it was an OD. Gradually the true horror was made known. His suicide was about as shocking as finding out about his death. Many of my friends were acting as if one of our friends passed away. It was a very sad and weird time.

My late son identified w Kurt.. we spent hundreds of hours watching Nirvana on MTV while Eric received his sickening chemo. For 3 years. We had all the CDs. Eric was only 12 but he felt Cobain could identify w cancer pain.. he sings, ‘ I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black’, was such an emotional hook for him. How could it not? We were together in his hospital bed when the life changing news that Kurt had died flashed on the tiny hospital TV… This was in ‘94… Eric never recovered and passed a year after Cobain. He verbally hoped he’d see Kurt once he got to Heaven. And I’m sure he did.
