Kurt was absolutely not a jerk. Everyone who knew him said he was funny, charming and one of the most heart felt people you'd ever want to meet. Every time I see Kurt take that one breath, he opens his eyes wide and I get chills. I watched this when it first released and the whole concert was amazing.
He was also very very loudly, and well documented, an advocate for women’s rights, civil rights, and anyone who needed the platform. His songs were stories told from what their perspectives might be

I met Kurt when I was a freshman in high school. He was so nice to me. He even talked to me for a few minutes about music and bands I liked. He definitly turned me into a huge Nirvana fan.
I'm so jealous! I was in 8th grade when he died and I still remember the moment I heard the news on the radio. We were so lucky to have grown up when we did. Music in the early 90's was so real and raw. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, I could go on and on. They influenced my taste in music that was just developing in those early teen years and I'm so glad they were around. So many of them drew inspiration from the best of rock, blues, punk and folk music. Bands played instruments, singers sang, no autotune, no overly polished, overly produced, overly hyped, choreographed nonsense. Then came Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls and it was over.
Don’t get me wrong Kurt was very intelligent and could be an asshole to reporters being assholes but for the most part he seemed quiet, humble, kind (I always loved how he took the time to sign things for fans like he did after the MTV Unplugged concert).
This was due to Kurt telling him to tone it down...the drums should be heard the least, or an afterthought if you will...Dave was drumming on eggshells...
These specific unplugged songs they did are my fave, because they really remind me so much of the raw emotion you hear in folk Mexican ranchero/mariachi artists I grew up listening , like Vicente Fernandez, Aida Cuevas, Juan Gabriel etc. Obviously different genre, but that’s the only other music I’ve ever heard this and it gives me the chills and feeling I get when I listen to the unplugged songs they did. 🤔 💜
I recently watched a vocal coach reacting to this, and she was on point when she said "he doesn't even sound human, it sounds like a wounded animal trapped in a cage, wailing". Yeah. That's all the pain he had inside. It hurts me, nobody should have to suffer so much, it's not fair.
I will never forget watching this live at 10 years old. During this song my big brother looked at me and asked why I was crying. I said that I didn't know why. And to this day I can never listen to this performance and not do the ugliest cry. Kurt was such an incredible talent.

Nirvana's Unplugged set is one of the greatest ever done. Kurt did an amazing job of holding back his trademark scream until this song. We were all waiting for it the whole set.
I had a weird Japanese import of the unplugged session that I paid a TON of money for in like 1996. I think I still have the CD around somewhere. This Nirvana one was basically the only REALLY good unplugged.

But I feel that fully appreciating it requires living through that era, and/or a lot of heartbreaking research and reading to catch the depth of just how much emotion is on display in that set. That doesn't take away from the fact that this one is still one of the greatest MTV ever filmed.
You got it spot on man! It was a 10! His voice was able to invoke a set of emotions inside of you that ranged from complete vulnerability to absolute rage! He took us to places in our heads and our hearts that are often felt, but seldom spoken. There was never anyone else like him before, nor will there ever be anyone like him again. RIP Kurt. Kurt Cobain is honestly one of the most fascinating people to ever exist. You should check out some interviews with him or something, because he was just such an endlessly interesting and unique human being.
Totally agree! One my favourite interviews is the one from MTV, when he is eating cookies the whole time while holding baby Frances on his lap... at the end he gave a cookie to Dave 😂
And it was a complete shitshow before filming started. The fact that this show even happened, let alone being one of the greatest live performances of all time, is a goddamn miracle.
There's that obvious moment when this song shifts up about 10 gears. Scream-singing an octave higher than where he started. But notice how the whole song is tamed down a notch JUST BEFORE that moment. I see that as an example of true artistry...a true artist can set the tone, set the mood, and get you to follow where he (or she) is taking you. In this song, you set a mood, you quiet it down so that it's almost invisible, and then you deliver a punch to the gut. It's like a magician who knows how to misdirect before astonishing you with the big reveal. And even though I know it's coming, for me it works every time. From Beethoven to The Beatles to Prince, you find artists who know how to pull this off.
Kurt was playing actually. He was one of the empathic humans on the face of the earth. People ( Courtney Love especially) took advantage of his kindness. It was extreme and very sad. He also had a great sense of humor.

Kurt was just being sarcastic when he dropped the f bomb. He was a very gentle soul in some ways, but painfully honest too. I'm not sure if you're aware, but he was dead within a few months of this performance. He took his own life. When I hear that part of the song, it makes me feel just a tiny fraction of the emotion Kurt may have felt when he was overwhelmed with aspects of life. Great reaction.

Whether he killed himself or not one thing is clear, Kurt (at a very young age considering,) saw, knew and felt the cold, hard, pitiful hypocritical and (for lack of a better term) satanic truth about the "world", his "place" in it, and the futility of his or anyone else's efforts to be anything but part of the problem, and he, like practically everyone else who did, struggled like crazy to f'kn handle it. I have simply glimpsed at interval moments what he had freight training through his psyche every moment of his life since atleast his mid teens. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It was a huge part of his genius, his achievements, all his faults and addictions, and his death. If he did kill himself if wasn't because he was weak, it was because he ran out of the Herculean strength he had to keep generating to live and achieve what he did up until that point.
Lead Belly (the guy who originally owned that $500k guitar Kurt wanted) was a massively important folk/blues singer-songwriter. He’s worth looking up. Keep up the thoughtful and entertaining videos! 🙏

If you think about the context of this song, and the emotions that are outlaid, its no surprise that the vocal tones changed. Just like emotions, sometimes we are numb to the pain around us, then all of a sudden we come to a breaking point. When Kurt transitioned from that acoustic, mellow, and haunting tone...and into the angry, hurt screams...genius.
The end of this song is one of the defining moments in rock and roll history. You can actually feel the pain in his voice. Makes you wonder if it was linked to his own demons in his personal life. R.I.P Kurt. Gone but will never be forgotten because of performances like this!
Nirvana's Unplugged show was so perfectly curated. MTV wanted them to play more after this song... I think the set was short compared to most of their uplugged concerts...but this is what they prepared, and it was the perfect ending.
I think he actually told the MTV producers I can't top what I just did out there. Meaning he gave it his all in that last song and nothing would be able to top that ending
True Story!!! The original of this, done by Lead Belly (in 1944), was one of my grandmother's favorite songs. She knew it when she was a kid (it had been a mountain song since AT LEAST 1853), growing up in a POOR ass Kentucky mining Hollow (they LITERALLY had 3 pairs of shoes for 6 kids) and loved it as a child hearing it on porches and shit. Before she died, I got to play this for her, and she was like "THAT is how someone should feel when sing this"... and I KNEW that she meant that sorta desperate screaming that Kurt does at the end. And THAT is when I learned that the song, for better or worse, is about a man that sees his love getting ready to leave the little world that they have for a bigger world, and realizing that he can never leave. And THAT is when I realized that it reminded her of how her father reacted when she left the Hollow for the rest of the world, and he was stuck in the mines until he died of Black Lung. And THAT is how fucking deep this song really is, man!!! "My girl" isn't a girlfriend... its a daughter! 😳

I loved this. I’m 43 years old and was very involved in the punk scene back in the early to mid 90s as a teenager. Your reaction was priceless and authentic. It definitely made me smile. Kurt had a way of showing the human spirit - the sorrow and despair- through his voice that I’ve never seen duplicated. When I was a kid I used to hate on Nirvana because they were “mainstream.” That was a stupid take. I look back and smile when I see these videos of people being affected by the power in his voice today. Love the video. Peace.
If you know anything about what he was going thru at this point in his life, you'd know that this song was "personal". When He pauses and opens his eyes I get icy freaking chills. Every. Single. Time.
The humble act of stopping to sign autographs just moments after delivering a performance of THAT caliber, speaks volumes about the man's character & his right-sizedness in relation to the bigger picture. What a devastating loss to my generation. He gave voice to what we felt in our hearts, & kept our feet on terra firma. He captured the spirit of all of us who grew up during that time with his unique blend of anger & pain & disregard for the rules & authority, a yearning for something different. More than anything else, he taught us that the finish line is a myth, that once we reached our goals, we'd find the result to be quite different than we'd expected when we set out in pursuit of them, that we would spend our whole lives chasing after things we thought we wanted, but once we had them, quickly realize nothing is ever anything like the brochure. He taught us to embrace the journey as it's own reward because nothing greater than simply experiencing it all is forthcoming. Like beautiful iridescent bubbles floating in the air, drifting ever downwards, if we reached out hoping to catch one, it would burst the moment we touched it, such is life, our hopes & dreams. He taught us how beautiful & fragile life really was. And just like that, our voice went silent. He was gone. This is inarguably one of his best performances. From the monotonous rhythmic drone that hypnotizes & draws you in, to the unexpected burst of emotion, the urgent demand for answers, that climactic scream & the pause, that breath as he opens his eyes & looks directly into your soul & realizes that the answer won't change what's been done, before delivering the rest of the last line of the song, pained & drained by the futility of all he's poured into it. Then he stops to sign autographs, like he didn't just do that, like he understood that he never would have had access to such a forum for his art were it not for the fans, & the least he could do out of gratitude was to stop to sign a few autographs, that he owed more to us than we owed to him. He was an amazing soul. He understood far more than most ever will. He felt everything. Perhaps too much.

That moment. The moment when he pauses on “shiver” at the end. That’s one of the greatest moments in rock in the 90s. After this I’d say keep going in order of the videos as released. Teen Spirit was the first (of the major label videos) and then you did Come As You Are. Lithium should be next. Then In Bloom. Maybe the studio versions of Dive and Aneurysm off the Incesticide album. Then the videos for the In Utero album.

By the way , I think the guy doing this video didn't catch it at the beginning of the song, he didn't write it, it's a cover of an old blues song by Leadbelly, it was his guitar he's talking about wanting to buy. Yeah, this song really grips you, like the way he sang it was like revenge , to put some fear into someone who cheated. I admit, when i was young and naive I cheated on someone i really loved, and it tore his heart out, and I heard this song about that time and it was like, yeah, she had that comin' to her , a musical slap in the face or punch to the gut. Powerful.
He should actually do the live version of Aneurysm. Live at the Paramount. I'd actually skip come as you are. I grew up to Nirvana in the 90s. Were always my favorite band and still are, all grown up. Kurt got me into playing the guitar as a teen. I think Kurt had an ear for melody and ability to write only a few people in history ever had. Lennon and Elliot Smith are the others imo. And I've only said all that because Come as You are has always been overrated and honestly just not one if Kurts best imo. Do heart shaped box over that if you're going with more known songs
The amount of bands that remade Leadbelly songs is amazing. People would be really surprised to lean some of their favorite songs are old blues covers.
Nirvana Unplugged was easily the best Unplugged show MTV ever did. And the performance of this song was by far the best of all Unplugged songs. This was definitely Nirvanas finest hour. Kurt Cobain will always be at the top of my list of artists who left us far too soon.
Leadbelly is a folk singer from many years ago. This is Kurt's tribute to an American folk singer he much appreciated. This entire session of MTv unplugged is amazing. Sadly, Kurt like so many other amazing grunge era musicians left us way too soon. Learn to love and appreciate all music genres.

Kurt was one of the most kind hearted people you’d ever meet. He was being cheeky saying FU. I saw them live in Houston way back in the day. He stopped the show twice. Once because someone threw a pair of prescription glasses on the stage and he stopped the show to find out who the belonged to and to make sure they got them back. Then a girl was crowd surfing and he saw she was getting groped so he stopped the show and reprimanded the guys and said if he sees anything like that again we’d hear nothing but feedback for the next 2 hours. Super kind hearted guy. Also, you may know this by now, he gave credit to the song writers at the start of the video. But that was easy to miss. I like your videos. Keep it up. Awesome to see the next generation enjoying the old school rock!
This whole concert played non stop on MTV. Was so good. And sad. Knowing he died not long after with the whole "mystery" behind his death. He def portrayed to a whole generation, that even he was struggling with mental health, depression , addiciton, and emoted so much for the youth being branded "the lazy generation" yet no one really listened to us.
You need to listen to the whole set. God this played so much, especially after he died. There was a time I felt like I couldn’t turn on MTV without seeing this set replayed.
Nirvana came out the year I entered high school. Their music, and Kurt's voice, grabbed my soul! I loved watching your reaction. Especially when he started screaming. This was their best performance as a band as a whole. Keep doin whatcha doin, young man. And DEFINITELY check out Leadbelly. RESPECT

The drummer for this band (Nirvana) is Dave Grohl.. He became the front man for a group called Foo fighters that's grieving the loss of their drummer from an overdose on 3/19/22 after a show in Bogota Colombia. Dave Grohl is also part of Queens of the Stone Age. Kurt Cobain killed himself at 27. He was a great musician, but he never seemed to be happy after he got what he wanted. Check out Nirvana's song The man who sold the world. Sometimes you can't stop a suicide no matter what you do . Now he's part of the 27 club forever

He definitely was not being a jerk! There was banter throughout the show between him and the audience...there was one guy in particular who you can hear talking to Kurt, in between the songs, throughout the whole show! I always thought that audience member was a little annoying myself, but I still always enjoyed the in-between-the-song moments, throughout!
Kurt was a really shy humble guy. Lots of kindness. He put out a statement to his fans that said something like: "If you r a racist, sexist, homophobes, or how do you spell biget , don't come to any of our shows. We don't want you! " Only accepting people here. ❣️
This is the greatest live performance ever, I mean the way the atmosphere changed when he started screaming...this was the song that introduced me to rock and then metal and since then I've seen hundreds of absolutely brilliant performances, but nothing ever hit me like this one. Many other bands were much better than Nirvana "musically" but what makes Nirvana my favourite band is that they didn't really give a fuck, they let their emotions drown everything else.
In the first 30 sec I knew you were a real ass dude. And the way you have the lyrics and the video on the side 10/10 on execution. You actually pick apart and follow the vibe of the song too. Chase it man, you got something. When he screamed and blew your mind i was like yep that how i first reacted!!!!
DUDE YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO THE WHOLE CONCERT ITS AMAZING, even if its off camera, this whole album has a special vibe to it that is only experienced in one sitting. You feel the energy, their personality. It’s one of the greatest performances in history. And the best in grunge. If you liked this dude you gotta check out Alice in chains unplugged. (Btw there’s two versions of the nirvana New York mtv unplugged, there’s the one without the warmups and stuff and the one where it’s the full album, the album you want is the one where there’s the least songs like 10?
