Hey hyr0llr, Thanks for the video. I just did my timing chain in my 1990 240sx and this video was very helpful. I just finished mine tonight, and when I started the car it sounds like there is some knock happening. I marked everything very carefully as I went and put it all back together in the same position. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe the distributor is out of time by one tooth on the drive gear on the crank. This seems unlikely tho since I was very careful when I put it all back together. When you put the engine to TDC, what marker on the harmonic balancer lined up with the timing marker on the block? I set mine by aligning the keyway on the cam shaft to the 12 o'clock position, aligning the punch mark on the chain and sprocket pointing right, and aligning the distributor in the cylinder 1 position. I'm worried that I did something wrong and might ruin my engine, so any suggestions that you may have would be appreciated. Thanks!

shitsonny when i put my balancer on, i aligned the marker on the block with the 0 degree on the balancer (2nd mark from the left). When i initially put the timing together i was one tooth on the cam and it just sounded rough but not like a knocking sound. Then i Reset the timing correctly but still sounded rough, which i found out was because when i was off a tooth on the distributor. Once that was corrected, car has run fine. Ive been running the car from the time of this video to today. So i cant really say why it sounds like that. I would check the markings again. The 0 on the crank pulley, the key way pointing at the 12 o clock on the cam and pointing aft on the timing chain looking at it.

hyr0llr when I set my engine to what I thought was tdc, I had the cam keyway pointing up and punch Mark's pointing right, but the balancer was on the mark second from the right when looking at the car from the front. When I took the cover off, both the marker on the crank gear and the marker on the cam gear were lined up with the correct chain links. When I put it back together, the chain was on the right links, the balancer was still in the same spot and my marks on the distributor lined up. I can't see where I could have possibly gone wrong. I had a similar amount of chain slack on the driver's side as you when I put the new chain on. Maybe that's rattling until the oil pressure builds and making the noise I hear.

shitsonny you said it was 2nd from the right on the crank pulley? Mines 2nd from the left. How lock is the knocking sound? Or is it the sound of maybe the piston hitting the valves?
@shitsonny
@shitsonny 7 лет назад
So it turns out that the sound was just the lifters. Some air got in there while I was working on it. I bled them according to the service manual and the sound went away. Everything seems fine now and it's running well. Thanks again for your video and the quick responses on here :)

Did you have to crank the motor to tdc at the end before installing the distributor? Or did aiming D on the oil pump rod solve that?
@hyr0llr
@hyr0llr Год назад
Yes. TDC on compression stroke. Once that it set. The you add oil pump with the D facing the correct way and then the distributor, lines up with the oil pump and then fine tune the timing woth the Dis. Cap.

Hello Rolando congrats on the vídeo, i had the same problem, broken chain guide on my ka24e! I did the replacement, aligned the sprockets (TDC), cam and crank, but the engine is running very rough, little power when i press the gas! Maybe the oil pump shaft is off sinc??
@hyr0llr
@hyr0llr 3 года назад
if the chain timing is for sure good. try rotating the distributor 1 tooth each way and see if one of the ways helps.

@@hyr0llr Thank you, i´ll try that! I did replace both sprockets and the chain with new ones, off a kit, from a company called "Evergreen", don´t know if is any good! But if the distributor rotation does not fix it, i´m thinking on removing the timing cover again and try with the sprockets and chain i had before! Thanks again for your reply

good video

You should put it at top dead center(TDC) prior to removing the distributor. Once at TDC then mark the distributor rotor position and mounting plate to the head position, then you can remove it. Make sure to mark it good, if the distributor is 1 tooth off your timing will be 20 degrees off.
@hyr0llr
@hyr0llr 6 лет назад
jayb215 the distributor can only go one way. So with the car at TDC and with the FSM saying the "half moon" points a certain way, everything else will follow.

hyr0llr your right I was thinking if the oil pump was removed
@FelipeZELDAguy

Whats the procedure once the oil pump and distributor are removed? What I did was crank it with a paper towel shoved in spark plug hole #1 until it popped out. But now my crank still needs a few more turns before it even reaches the first timing mark? Did i install something incorrectly in the timing cover or am I supposed to crank it a few more times to line up with those markings?

Same happened to the my dohc 240, reason the guides on my car broke was because of the top guide small piece fell down and created a mess

Question: How far can you safely raise the engine without bending/breaking shit? (with motor mounts nuts removed)
@hyr0llr

I dont remember exactly but it was a good amount of lift. Just keep and eye on hoses and wiring

Hey bro, was replacing my timing chain and when the chain was off I moved the camshaft sprocket accidentally, TOP DEAD CENTER POINTS AT 12 OCLOCK and my camshaft pointer was almost at 2 o'clock do you think I hit or bent some valves? I moved it back to 12 o'clock position TDC.
@hyr0llr
@hyr0llr 3 года назад
You moved the camshaft by hand? did it feel like the camshaft hit something?. If all this was by hand, you should be fine. When i did the timing and other time when i was doing the valve seals, i moved the the camshaft a little bit accidently. As long as everything is lined up with the marks, should be good to go.
@zlabfab487
@zlabfab487 3 года назад
@@hyr0llr i messed up by using an impact gun to tighten the camshaft bolt so i wouldn't know for sure. Cuz the amount the camshaft moved I think the valves stayed in place but I could be wrong? thanks for the reply dude
@hyr0llr
@hyr0llr 3 года назад
@@zlabfab487 figured that since you wrote teh comment lol. Best case scenario if something did happen, its only on 1 and 4 cylinders since the other 2 are at BTC. Damn that a hard one to answer cuz there is many ways that i would do to see if there is still compression. Idk man. i guess for peice of mind, take the head off to see for sure if there good to go. i know its more work, but its the most legit way.

@@zlabfab487 is the motor in or out of the car? and if its in the car. are the intake and exhaust manifolds off?
@zlabfab487
@zlabfab487 3 года назад
@@hyr0llr the motor is in the car and the intake and exhaust are not off. A question I have is that if on TDC valves are closed right, so if camshaft moved clockwise the valves should be opening going upwards ?

Currrently trying to figure out what going on with my car, replaced the head gasket and machined the head but still getting water mixing with oil so someone reffered me to this video saying that its cauae my timing chain is cutting into the water jacket
@hyr0llr

Might be a front timing cover gasket leaking into the cool8ng system.
