The Hero4 underchassis mount with the new lift shackles in place (2" +- lift overall ). Since they are "double-jointed", I was curious to see if the intermediate joint would move much during fairly normal driving events. There seemed to be some controversy over whether mounting the curved shackle end forward or aft would be any operation, ride comfort or safety issue. The original instructions are written in Malay, on which my knowledge level is non-existent at best, but thankfully also have line-sketches and do indeed illustrate installing them either way.
After sketching them out in AutoCAD and watching the angles changing, it appears that its actually safer to have them up front / forward as it would prevent "shackle flip" if somehow the axle drooped far enough to allow the secondary pivot to pass the primary pivot on a downswing. Unless you're running super-long stroke shocks, I can't see any way that could occur as the shock bottoming out is going to limit maximum axle droop, apparently confirming what I saw while cycling the jack. And in my particular case, the RideRite airbags also act as another axle limiter, as they have a finite stretch capability as well.
PS on 8 September 2021, I now have over 4k miles on these shackles including over 200 miles of off-road running, and no issues or contact between the unit parts themselves or any OE chassis parts. So no, mounting these "backwards" is in no wise dangerous or concerning.
PS on 18 September 2022, I now have over 11k miles on these shackles including over 300 miles of off-road running, and no issues or contact between the unit parts themselves or any OE chassis parts. So no, mounting these "backwards" is still in no wise dangerous or concerning.
PPS on 20 January 2024, I now have over 16k miles on these shackles including over 400 miles of off-road running, and no issues or contact between the unit parts themselves or any OE chassis parts. So no, mounting these "backwards" is still in no wise dangerous or concerning, I consider the issue closed.

Hello, thx for the good video, I've been wanting to install this device for a long time. but, like a I many guys I can't search for any advantages, maybe only the biggest rear suspension moves.

@frontiergeek4953 2 года назад
Fox Fox, thx for writing in. Honestly I can't say this is any advantage, one side or the other, ride feel seems pretty much the same to me, so there's that. I got a 1-3/4"-ish lift from them which was my real goal, I just got the comfort shackle kit cause it had the front top-hat spacers and the shackles all in one box, and somebody on Club Frontier was selling it cheap, otherwise I really think I'd gone with just standard adjustable shackles.

You won't see any benefits without longer shocks, these help the springs droop more but the factory shocks prevent any additional droop.
@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 2 года назад
Hello Jordan, thx for writing in. You are mostly correct, the springs are still limiting my droop as I installed the comfort shackles in the "comfort ride" position, not reversed for maximum possible droop. I am going to install Bilstein 5165 remote reservoirs as these have over 100k on them and should be ready for retirement soon. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel and hope you are finding it informative as well.

@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 2 года назад
Thx for writing in James, these are for lifting yes, they provide a 2" lift at the axle and about 4" at the shackle end. The video and accompanying notes pretty much explain everything I know about them, they're just shackles, nothing amazing or glittery, just a few steel plates and some bolts. They are sold on Amazon and EBay, among other merchants.

What is the purpose of this product and the Pros and Cons now that you have some driving time with them?
@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 3 года назад
Broncanus, thx for writing in. Ah, well now, not sure I have enough time on them yet really to say if there are any great pro's, ..... or con's. A lift shackle in itself, in it's simplest form, is pretty obvious, it has a 2:1 lift ratio on the rear axle, 4" at the shackle is 2"+- at the axle point. Now these are more complicated due to the extra hinge point, so they're "double jointed". The idea's that that's supposed to allow a small amount of lift / extension at the pivot w/o the main spring coming into play. Right now, I can't say beyond possibly a placebo effect, that that part of the design is actually noticeable as to providing any "comfort". Will be doing some major offroading in Maine in the first week of August, should have much more of a report then. Also some folk seem to believe and continue to propagate the story that lift shackles flatten your springs faster. I have seen no science-based evidence to show what physics would be involved in this phenomenon, so I'm going to attribute it to another one of those "mechanic's urban legends".
@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 2 года назад
Alright so with 4k miles plus / minus added now, I can add more commentary. At first I thought because of the dual-pivots it was cutting down on directional stability, due maybe to some axle jacking in the rear, but it really turned out my alignment was pretty boogered and after a very good n thorough alignment by a dedicated tech at the Firestone Auto in Odenton MD ( the guy was from Cambodia and though his English wasn't great, he was super-cool and a very knowledgeable alignment guy ), she drives a ton straighter and only wanders on badly crowned roads. I've heard no bumping or banging and there is no sign of any paint marks from parts impacts so I'd say these are proven and effective, including a full day off-road in the Maine woods ( 12.5 hrs ).

Hello Seid, thanks for writing in. Someone else had asked the same thing, honestly I can't say I feel a difference one way or the other, this was a complete lift kit with front top hats and the extended shackles, that I purchased from another CF forum member, he had purchased but never installed, then dumped the set so I got them at a discount. Being that I did end up using all the parts, I'm happy with the purchase, but honestly would I pay extra for the swing shackles if I had to do it again, no I don't think I would, but that's all a matter of personal opinion. YMMV

Hello Ryan. Nice documentation. Where can we get replacement bushing?
@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for writing in Macho. I'm not sure about replacement bushings, the ones these came with fit perfectly on the OEM springs and they are urethane so they'll have quite a long life, especially as they have basically zero torque forces and only straight-line gravity forces. For what I paid for mine, if it's necessary to change out the bushings in the future, I'll probably just switch to lift shackles, I got these ridiculously cheap by comparison to list price, and I can't really say I can feel any real "comfort" one way or the other.

Hello Ilondosky, thx for writing in. Honestly, I can't really say its noticeable, at least to me, one way or the other, so they're installed, they'll be staying on cause I got the lift I wanted, but if for some reason they ever required replacement, no, I'd probably just go back to standard shackles. They may be a bit smoother, the butt dyno's never really a good determinate unless the difference is so big it's impossible to miss.

@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 10 месяцев назад
Hello Alfa, yes, they can be mounted both / either ways. The installation instructions are not in English but they also have detailed illustrations and they show the bars being mounted either way. Mounting them in this direction prevents them from hyperextending and then getting "hung up" when they come back down again, although in reality the shocks and brake lines most likely would prevent that from happening anyway, as they would be the limiting factor on axle travel.

@frontiergeek4953 2 года назад
Hi Sami, thanks for writing in. Yes, they will take heavy punishment, honestly as thick as the steel plates are that make up these shackles, if the spring mounts didn't rip off the truck first, with confidence I'd say you could hang the truck vertically with two strong chains and a crane hoist. We ran over 90 one-way miles in August, from Millinocket Maine to the Canadian Border crossing, and back, at about 35 to 40MPH on an unpaved washboard logging road called the Golden Road, zero issues or notable ride degradation.

Doesn't help that the shackles are the wrong way round
@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 Год назад
Hello Raptor, thanks for writing in. Actually, they work just fine either way and have been doing their job for over a year. The instructions are in Malay, but the line-drawings are universal, and the manufacturer clearly shows the swings mounted in either direction. They will work better reversed from the way I have them mounted, if you have long-extension shocks and travel limiter straps installed on the axle. If not, the risk is the shackle flips all the way to maximum extension with both pivot points extended. There is then a 50 / 50 probability that the shackle could de-extend "backwards" against itself and get jammed in the "up position". This would be a serious issue if only one side were to do this, as you would now have a very serious lean and a twisting force in the truck's frame. Installed the way I placed them, this scenario is not possible. I used AutoCAD to mock up this scenario then ran the kinematics, and I don;t know if this has ever actually occurred in the real world, but it could. So I went with safety.

@frontiergeek4953
@frontiergeek4953 4 месяца назад
Dimon's question in English is: What is this video for? Why the hell do you put double-hinged spring earrings? In order to increase the articulation of the axle, it is necessary to show that the car is not hung diagonally, and not movement on the highway and on the grass with pebbles. Are you there in the states at all with no understanding of what and what is intended? Hello Dimon, These are not to increase articulation, so I think you may be confused as to construction and purpose. They are alleged to take some of the shock out of larger on-road potholes / bumps, or offroad craters. The only way to increase rear articulation is with longer throw shocks, as they are 99% of the time the limiting factor for axle extension. Behind that would be the length of the brake lines and the ABS wires. Here in the States, once in a while we do get an original thought, I think we have some understanding of what we are doing. Have run some very rough trails and everything handled fine, nothing broke.
