I created this How to, because I could not find any information or tips to remove the stubborn crankshaft gear so that I could change my front crankshaft seal on my Nissan Hardbody D21 pickup VG30E. I hope this helps anyone who gets in a jam like I did.

Some moons ago I paid a shop ALLOT of my hard earned money to do a deluxe timing job(cams seals, front main crank, water pump, timing belt etc. etc.). Sure enough, One year after they did the work my wd21 pathfinder was leaking oil from the front main!!!! The shop went outta business or I would have thrown a tire their fukin bay door ala the ole Discount Tire commercial!!! I love my ole vg but it's not a low maintenance engine with the timing belt.

I just cut off mine with an angle grinder and replaced it with used one.

How far did you have to cut into the crankshaft sprocket? Did you just hammer the shallow cut with a screw driver to wedge it apart and crack it? Damage the crankshaft any? Thanks for any info.

What does Nissan recommend for removing this gear? Frankly, this is the best bet I've found yet, besides my idea of welding a chain to it and using a slide hammer.

I might have to do this on my 91 Maxima. I wish Nissan designed something better than this.

hi my car is a 90 nissan 300zx and do you know how to reset the cam sprocket or the timing on the passenger side at tdc because my car won't start after changing timing belt? during the changing i try to take our the cam sprockets at the passenger side and it spin or snap into position so i might lose some timing or tdc.

belt reinstall tension-ing must be done with rocker arms loose. Also, alignment of cam gears to crank sprocket is critical, or you will bend your valve stems. DONT rotate your crank without the belt attached to cam gears, unless rocker arms are loose. If loose, you can position at will, then install belt with crank and cams in correct position, adjust tension, then tighten back down rocker arms.

I must be lucky pulling it off by hand. But that plate at the back is not coming off

Im getting ready to tackle this on my 96 Pathy, VG33e. That is probably the best suggestion i have seen on how to remove it. Very Creative. I would like to know how you got the new one back on. Being that this is my first timing gear change, im not sure if there is a specail tool or if u have to be creative or what. Anyways, great vid, thanks a ton for sharing.

GOOD JOB !! Yesterday did the same process for nissam maxima J30 with VG30E engine. Drilled for 2 6 milimeter bolts and used puller. Movement started with cracking sound and each next step too. A lot of rust under the sprocket. Now have to decide to use the same sprocket or search for the new one. The old sprocked has a little flattened teeth at the engine side because of prying with screwdriver at the beginning of removal process.

Thanks so much for your video, did same thing on 1986 300zx Turbo. I don't think it would have worked any other way.

Did you replace the gear after drilling into it or did you re-use it?
