My father worked for a Nissan dealer in the early 80’s. He’d often bring home a first gen Maxima as his demo. There was a huge demand for them as I recall my dad saying that they sold over MSRP and there was often a waitlist. I’ll have to say that was my favorite generation because of the straight 6 and RWD. By the time I got my license and could afford one, I picked up a used 1986 SE 5 speed. I ended up buying a 1992 SE new. I also tried to buy a 2003 SE with a 6 speed but the deal fell through

A 02 or 03 Se 6MT would be my all time fav Maximas. I sold Nissans in the 90s and recall the "old timers" stories of people literally following the trucks delivering Japaense cars...Hoping they were not already pre sold.

I had an 85 that my grandfather bought new...low mileage, and later on, my dad had a 1st generation Mercury Villager (same as Nissan Quest, both built in Avon Lake, Ohio) and it had the same VG30 as the 85 I had
@autochatter
@autochatter 3 месяца назад
That's cool! The first gen Quest and Villager were built off a modified 89 to 94 Maxima platform. The VG engines in them had less power than the Maxima because Ford insisted on a non interference design...So timing belts breaking doesn't wreck the valves.

Ive always liked tbe maxima. Had an 86 wagon. Liked the following 4dsc bodystyle the best. Later on i could never figure out why they offered both maxima amd altima as they seemed so similar in many ways to a layman. Hopefully they come up with a new layout for those of us who dont want a crossover, need more car than a sports car, etc. Remains to be seen what and how that will look like.
@autochatter
@autochatter Месяц назад
Yeah, when the Altima "grew up" and had the same optional V6 the Maxima had, it was a bit of a head scratcher to me too. The Maxima was always a little nicer inside though. I'm not sure if sedans will surge in popularity again. People love their station wagons with lift kits (crossovers).

I remember seeing the Nissan Max back in the late 80s as a kid. My mother had purchased a New 1989 Mercury Cougar, and a guy in a Light-Tan Maxima kept trying to race my Mother at the Light..lol One Concert night in school there was a girl i had a crush on. After the Concert everyone was in the parking lot, she got in a White Maxima. In the early 90s when my Aunt & Uncle had moved they had a Neighbor who had a new Maxima every couple of years. My cousins and I always liked each one they got. Back in '99 I was reading a Magazine and saw a Advertisement for the new 2000 Max GLE and said to myself I wanted to own one day . As Teen back in the late 90s the 3 vehicles I drooled over was the Acura RL, Lincoln VIII and the Nissan Maxima. Actually I believe they were some of the first vehicles that had an opt of having Xenon Headlights or what we called White Headlights as Teens...lol Very unusual back then, they catch your attention. The Maxima will be missed.

Great upload. I have a current-gen Maxima as my daily. Fantastic car with the right amount of size and power. Such a shame this model is planned to be scrapped. They say possible ‘EV’ but we’ll see. Hopefully it doesn’t return as an SUV à la Eclipse Cross. If that’s the case, then I’d rather just see the nameplate gone for good. How many SUVs does the population really need?
@autochatter
@autochatter Год назад
That's a good question. Nissan has had a Maxima crossover for over two decades already (Murano LOL). I'm sad to see it go,but Crossovers seem to be all people want nowadays. Thank you as always for enjoying the video! P.S. You should do a vid on your Maxima!

The mistake was partnership with Renault. After 2003 Nissan or Maxima was not the same. Owned a 93,02,06: 1st place the 3rd generation 93 2nd place the 5th generation 02 3rd place. the 6th gen 06 (Nothing but trouble)
@autochatter
@autochatter 5 месяцев назад
I'm surprised you placed the 02 in second. I love a 02 or 03 Maxima. But the 89-94 3rd gens were nice so I get it. The 4th gen was rated one of the most reliable cars you could buy at the at the time ,and the 3 liter VQ was nice.

Thanks for your response@@autochatter Our third generation was pearl white with dark red leather. Parents had it from 1993 to 2001. I kept it from 2001 to 2011. Third generation was peak time for Nissan. (The 02 went to son) The 5th generation was last of the best before Nissan went downhill. Purchased a pearl white 06 SE with Nav in 2011. That car fell apart under 100K miles. It had a transmission replaced,Timing Chain,CV joints alternator. After that I move to Infiniti and was happier than ever.
@autochatter
@autochatter 5 месяцев назад
@mrcaialexander2352 Totally get it. If you watch enough of my stuff, you will see I don't like CVTs. Timing chain guides on the Vq 3.5 liters was more common to wear out. My wife had a 07 Quest that sounded like it had a Supercharger LOL. We got it new though and it went 170k fairly reliably before trading it in. No CVT of course. Lexus LS? Fine piece of machinery that is! Future vid on those is coming.

Large sedans are just a weird segment now. If you need something that big for passengers, you're better off with a crossover. Lots of crossovers offer loads of rear passenger features like reclining seats, shades, connectivity, vents, and the feeling of more space. At this price point it's hard to pick the sedan when the crossovers have the feeling of more bang for your buck for normal people. Most crossovers at this price are three rows as well. Full sized sedans are not the impressive gaints of the 20th century. Nobody is impressed with them for size. You get that from a crossover. If you need space for passengers you get a minivan or a crossover. If you want something that handles well you get a smaller sedan or coupe. Not much of a market for these anymore I think. Plus most are barely bigger than their midsize counter parts.
@autochatter
@autochatter Год назад
Sedan sales did way better than station wagons for years. The wagons had all the same basic advantages you cited.....but were just soooo uncool lol. SUVs became a status symbol and crossovers are a extention of that. I mean most SUVs were not going offroad anyway. Its genius that the car makers found a way to market a station wagon as a must have garage accessory today. Most of the 3 row crossovers has a final row of seats that might work for a little kid. A minivan would be a better choice ( a much better bang for your buck)...but that's looked at like station wagons used to be...So uncool.

Would you consider doing a story on the Chevrolet Suburban? It is the longest running nameplate in the whole world. I feel like it would be interesting. Probably a long video though. I have asked other creators if they would do it but they said no because "ew big American suv not interesting" Literally. Don't let that hold you back if you aren't interested. Just curious.

Yeah...I could give that topic a shot. I've done domestics some like my two part Corvette videos and the Buick Grand National is coming soon.
