My NP 300 (2016) has done 241000 kms (150000 miles), of which 100000 miles has been towing up too 3.5 ton all over Europe. During this time I’ve had the vehicle regularly serviced by Nissan and apart from the bottom hose rubbing against the bottom pulley and a new battery, the vehicle has been very reliable. Ive averaged 33 mpg over the last 4 years including towing. The engine pulled well even though i was fully loaded and towing nearly 3.5 tons up in The Alps and through the Mont Blanc tunnel, apart from a slight increase in temperature and the viscous fan kicking in, there were no other issues. i personally have found this truck to be comfortable, reliable and economic, low servicing costs at my local Nissan garage (Westway Nissan), so in a nutshell, the truck has been great and i think its not had an easy life but has been well looked after. The truck runs on General Grabber AT3’s.

Shouldnt the 2.3 dci be the same as in my renault master tow truck? FYI after 2 years ive got 360.000km down with at least 3500kg of weight driving around. With trailer attached u can do the math. For now ZERO failures or breakdowns, first injectors, first turbos, first clutch, nothing but regular service. So this is the best engine we ever used in our fleet!!!

This guy hate his job. Sorry, but it's almost impossible to listen to all those negative comments. Since when timing chain is reposponsible for pulling (3,5t)?! Stop talking things like that and instead explain, that all customers suppose to change oil frequently, not every 30.000km! and everything is going to be OK.

My mate's d40's timing chain skipped a tooth and then the valves met the pistons. You need a double chain. He got the motor rebuilt with it upgraded, we're finishing the engine install today.
@ztech6596
@ztech6596 4 года назад
When you are towing load you are most likely turning higher rpms (lower gear) for long sustained periods of time. So it would help if the timing chain was heavy duty.
@ATDistinction
@ATDistinction 4 года назад
@@ztech6596 How did it work when they only used timing belts?
@MrJamesonStyles
@MrJamesonStyles 4 года назад
They're making it make more power so it can pull the 3.5t. Of course the chain itself's not pulling that, but it's in an engine that's puffed up to be powerful enough to pull that, and they've left that chain in there. It's like some teenager having a go at a DIY turbo kit on their Sentra, but they don't do anything to the internals, then wonder why it blows up.
@ztech6596

@@ATDistinction They were replaced in shorter intervals. And its not like those belts are that much weaker than chains.

I thought the Engine was what they call an "Alliance" engine made by Renault and used by many. In the Renault Master (and if it is the 2.3 Alliance engine) then they are good for 200k miles and that's proven. Also, Nissan guarantee this engine for 100k or 5 years, so why would someone bring it to this establishment and not Nissan dealer, surely the vehicle has not covered 100K already?? Everyone seems to pan the new Nav but I have heard 3.2 rangers giving up at 30K, new hilux rusting, d maxs' not changing gears(autos).

Your videos are fairly informative but your argument re. the chain and tow capacity sort of let you down. You are probably a good mechanic with good knowledge of these engines but you are clearly not a mechanical engineer. The timing chain has the same loading on it if you are running empty or at gross train weight. Even if you really labour an engine, the load is still the same on the timing system, fast engine speeds and sudden changes in speed have more of an impact on the timing system than anything else. Towing load has an impact on the crank, it's bearings and the components that 'drive' it. i.e. pistons and associated components (including block).

This lads problem is he's dealing with these cars in his shop all the time because he's a specialist for those cars. Did you know the ford EcoBoost engine has had repeated issues with timing chain stretch, turbo leaks, injector issues? (The same shit nissan engines suffer with and every other turbo diesel engine for that matter) Well that's what happens when you don't maintain your vehicles. There's a reason people say you need to maintain your trucks engine meticulously, especially when being put to work. If you just leave your services to the 18000 miles it says in the handbook, eventually your engine will break regardless of what make and model it is. If you maintain them properly then you'll never have an issue

Hey mate, love your videos. I work for Nisan for a short period and I remember doing one of these pumps at the back of the motor. Call think the easier way to do it would be to leave the motor on the chassis and lift the cab up off of the chassis we were able to do this in just over an hour and a half. Rissen actually recommended removing the cab from the chassis as it’s a bit easier than taking the motor out separately. If you’ve got a hoist in the room I reckon this will save you heaps and labour if you can get it down pat. I’m also looking at buying one of your chain upgrade kits for a D 40 Thailand bill, have you got a link I can go to? Love the videos thanks for sharing

Mate, I've got to pull you up on the timing chain comments. Firstly, you don't tow with the timing chain.... The fact that the engine can now tow 3.5t VS 2t of the smaller unit is completely irrelevant to the timing chain. Second, yes it is a simplex chain, and not as durable as a twin row, but it has a lot less work to do now than the early YD engine's lower chain did. Third, my Australian owners handbook states to replace the chain at 300,000km. The YD had no recommendations on mileage, if the YS chain on my vehicle fails prior to this point, I'll definitely be talking to Nissan in regards to warranty. Perhaps some of the architecture is shared with the earlier engines, but things like the long single run chain, single mass flywheel and much better power delivery make it a winner in my book. (owner and 35yr motor mechanic)

Brett Cashmore the towing capacity has no effect on the timing chain, unless you don’t have a D shackle and decide to smash the front of your engine looking for a substitute. The only load on the timing chain comes from the valve springs and cam followers. The chain doesn't feel the effects of towing .01T or 10T, so not sure where that line of thought is going. But the other things you point out are valid, it is clearly a cheap engine, nothing like Nissan engineering pre-Renault, 1980 - 2005 glory days. Hello GuyF, I'm afraid you are wrong, the vehicle that is in the video has been bought from a third party company that buys in bulk from Nissan them selves and sells them on under their own company, without any warranty at all. We were surprised and shocked ourselves when we asked the customer about existing warranty, and because he bought it from the third party it didn't come with a Nissan warranty. Future advice, if you are buying one make sure it's from Nissan, and not sold on behalf of a third party.

Depending on what country your from you should be protected from by the relevant consumer law that a product should stand up to the expectation of reasonable reliability when used within the definition of "normal use" so I find it extremely hard to believe that you can buy a new vehicle with absolutely no warranty... Its basically illegal and you can take it back to Nissan directly or through the 3rd party for the warranty claim.

Maximum load on the engine occurs when maximum torque is actually utilised. Maximum torque is actually produced by these engines at quite low revs and it is the pulsing of cylinders firing at these low rev-high torque situations that puts most stress on components. I'm not enough of an engineer to know how much extra load this engine's timing chain comes under due to running maximum torque, but it won't be all that much and taking into account that the same load exactly is produced when pulling maximum torque when not towing, such as when pulling hard up hill at the torque converter's stall speed. The stall speed usually coincides with the revs at which max torque is produced, which explains why such a fully loaded engine on an automatic transmission is reluctant to rev past approx 2000 to 2200rpm until load is reduced. Personally I don't see towing to be a significant factor in valve-train wear, although constant high torque and high power towing will inevitably load the pistons, con-rods and crank significantly and increase heat at the top end which needs to be carried away by the coolant. Imagine paying for a repair to this engine at a Mercedes dealership. Even the Mercedes truck depots will be charging around £100/hour I presume.

Not trying to defend Nissan (who seem to have lost the plot) but if your argument is that this 3L engine is basically a 2L engine with bigger pistons then, presumably, the valves, cams etc don't change much - so why would there be any more strain on the timing chain? @west yorkshire engine services. for the average outdoorsy family wanting buy the np300 2wd auto, would you say it would be too risky to own one of these? or is there something one could do apart from regular maintanence that would ensure good quality of life from the vehicle. ?? good truck? bad truck?

I was the same , Nissans were good once, since the d22 d40 nightmares we have absolutely nothing to do with Nissan's, they did the dirty on too many freinds and family members, so now we all go with Toyota 4wds. Landcruisers.
@westyorkshireengineservice9160
Buddy you are so right I honestly said to Suzanne today after seeing this I DO NOT WANT TO BE A NISSAN ENGINE SPECIALIST ANY MORE, what a total let down. It's like they really do not want the engine to last beyond 100k.

West yorkshire engine services, just your basic modern cars these days are a disaster ,its obvious they are not built to last, i get tired of fixing things that shouldn't fail so early in a cars life ,I'm actually wondering what they're gearing up towards , probably 100% electric.

That is bull fuckin witchcraft. That Navara NP300 sold pretty well in Asian countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. They are the best pick up for driving in rough tropical road. Also the engine is a lot more economical compared to Ford Ranger and crapYota Hilux. And most of the users aren't complaining as much as this bull fuckin witchcraft.

Don’t forget the Spanish dual cab D40 Navarra brought in to Australia when they could not get Asian built vehicles. Very weak chassis not suitable for Australian off road towing. There is a flex point just behind the cab that bends upwards. Mine bent twice, each time the insurance paid for it to be bent back but would not pay fot the flex point to be re-enforced. I ended up stripping the tray and fuel tank out and welded in re-enforcing. Then there is the saga of the catalytic converter that did not work. The local Nissan dealer sourced by pass section and fitted free. Of charge. If you have a Spanish built D40 check out the flex point and keep a close eye on it.
@rossbrumby1957
@rossbrumby1957 5 лет назад
It's not just a flex point, the chassis rusts out from the inside. There's loads of photos online showing the rust, cracks and fixes.

I'm sure you'll have alot less failures with the 2.3 block including the timing chain. There are no failures on the Master/Movano who share the same block. Only the oil sump is a bit different. The chain is the same design as the 2.0 dci but longer and has been upgraded since the early 2.0dci years;)

Maybe you should do other vehicles' you would see other similar year dual cabs ect, such as hilux has single chain too.. never taken a starter motor out of a 79 series!@#?? I could go on.. why target only navara in your videos, I work on all vehicles and can tell you they all have similar and more and other matters. ford ranger has a 2litre engine with more power than d23 and runs 30lb boost standard. Cant wait until you pull apart one of these...oh forgot you only shit talk nissans.

new Toyota 2.8 engines i've heard are a piece of crap as well, i have seen a Toyota 4500 V8 in pieces and its a sight to behold, biggest piece of junk i've ever come across, I would never buy a Toyota with a 4500 V8 engine, i have an old Hilux 3.0 which has not let me down, I have a Nissan 2005 D22 3.0 which i rebuild entirely and blocked off the EGR, its been an excellent vehicle its mechanically better all round than my Hilux, plus Nissan has a far better gearbox.
