A small, convenient, and affordable charger for Sony NP-FW50 batteries. Because boy do they ever need some charging. How does it compare to my previous favourite charger? Stay tuned to find out!
Nitecore sent me this review unit free of charge to give it a try and to provide my honest impressions.

Thanks for the review, this is a nice little charger. Was mildly shocked to see the prices on the Sony chargers.

Stefan Wilkens yeah, it’s a bit much for sure. In Canada the Sony charger for the new Sony batteries is about $100. To charge One battery! 🤦🏻‍♂️

You give a good presentation, but you might want to step up your knowledge of Li-Ion cells and how they behave... Not being negative, just FYI

Hi Wes, Nitecore says it's output capacity is 8.4v @1A (max) and not say anything whether that 1A max power is per slot during dual batt charge, or total of dual slot. While the Dual LCD Charger specifically stated: 2x 500mA (Low moe) and 2x 800mA (High mode) Assuming the Dual LCD rating is true: 1. Since charging 2 batts in the Dual LCD Charger in Low mode (2x 0.5A output power) takes longer than the Nitecore, it means the Nitecore has more than 0.5A/slot. 2. Since charging 2 batts in the Dual LCD Charger in High mode (2x 0.8A output power) is faster than the Nitecore, it means the Nitecore outputs less than 0.8A/slot. So the rating one (or both) of these chargers might not be accurate, as the math doesn't match. Can you please confirm that the Dual LCD is indeed charging 2 batts at 1h51m which is way faster than the Nitecore 2h20m, although the Nitecore stated 1A max output? I know we can not rely entirely on product specs, so your real world testing is really what we need :) Thanks, Wes.

Well, those charging numbers had nothing to do with the product specs, it was just how long it took when I personally timed them. Depending on ambient temperature, battery health, and overall battery capacity, I would expect these numbers could vary slightly.

@@WesPerry So the Dual LCD Charger can definitely charge 2 batts faster than the Nitecore USN1, right? Btw, you have just got got a new subscriber. I love your great vids.

Oh yeah, it can definitely go faster than the Nitecore. It’s not a Huge difference, though. In which case I still use the dual LCD’s as my main chargers and use the USB ones for travel or I’ve expended an unusual number of batteries at the end of a day.

Another advantage of this charger is that it has three contacts. Other chargers usual only have two. This means that this charger can control the current going into the two cells of the battery, so one cell can't overcharge. This is better for the battery and also safer.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
I don’t think that’s how the third pin works. I built a dummy battery system where I could monitor the current on all three contacts while charging or using a battery, and it never engages current on the middle pin. It seems to just be for communication/verification. When the third pin is disconnected you get a “invalid battery” error on the camera, but it still powers it. When it’s disconnected while charging, none of the chargers seem to notice.

@@WesPerry This has to do with how you charge Li-Ion cells, particularly 2S packs, which these are. The purpose of the third pin is for cell balancing, its not needed during discharge (that's not to say Sony doesn't monitor it, hence the "invalid battery"), but it really only comes into play during charging... While 2S packs aren't that hard to figure out, once you go 3S, 4S, 5S etc, balancing really becomes a thing, a necessary thing. The pin is there for a reason, get your DMM out and measure volts across the pins, in pairs, you will see different voltages... This is to keep your house from burning down... check out Battery University

@@drmalenko As a matter of fact, I DID get out my DMM and put the battery on a remote sled, both charged it and discharged it and there was No current going either way on the middle pin. This is why I make this statement, not because of what some random person on the internet has told me.

I am trying to use my battery pack as a power source for this charger. It holds 10000 mah. Weirdlyy enough the charger turns itself off after a couple of mins. The battery pack is almost new and of a good brand. Whats going on? 🙁
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
Interesting. Have you tried it with any other packs? I haven’t had any issue charging with packs and this charger. I do notice most packs time out after about 30mins of charging regardless for some reason.

Thanks for this video! I'm looking into getting this charger, can you say it held up well? Or there may be a better charger out now?

That was a long time ago! This is my current favourite: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JvZ9FVSHYSk.html But the nitecore’s are still my favourite travel chargers.

Does this charge to 100%. Some have mentioned that even Sony original batteries only charge to ~92%. What has been your experience? Thanks. Appreciate the review and looking for a travel charger.

Odd. I’ve never had this happen with mine, and I have two of them. One gets used a Lot still.

@@WesPerry thanks - stuck with the NP-FW50 and have a few batteries - seems like the best option, only need charger. Am I correct that need quick charge to charge 2 batteries in the "quick" time of about 2.5 hrs
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
No that’s the USN 4 that requires a QuickCharge(TM) charger to do two at once. This one just needs a standard 5V usb charger that has high current output (2A+) to hit max speed.
