There are a multitude of scenarios that can allow your vehicle with open differentials (especially in 2wd) to become stuck. This video will demonstrate one of many such situations in which a solid Limited Slip Differential (Like Our Nitro Units) can really save the day!

The Nitro Helical Worm Gear is a torque-sensitive mechanical limited-slip differential that uses worm gears and spur gears to dispense and distinguish input power between two drive wheels or front and back axles. This is a completely separate design from the common beveled spider gear designs seen in most of the automotive industry.
Just like any LSD, the Nitro Helical Worm Gear functions as a standard or open differential under normal driving conditions, allowing one wheel to spin faster or slower as necessary. When a wheel experiences a loss of traction, the gear separation forces start to take effect and distributes the torque to the high-traction wheel by increasing the helical-shaped gears mesh force until wheel spin is reduced or entirely stopped. Once the vehicle exits the low traction condition, the differential resumes normal operation.
What's nice about the operation of a Nitro Helical Worm Gear LSD, is its characteristics; smooth, quiet and automatic. This LSD will engage without any driver awareness or require any action. It also has no wearable components and requires no maintenance, producing less time on the rack and more on the road.

Dood. Thank you. This is the first, real world video, I've seen of this LSD! And, it's in the exact scenario I envision using it. I have a 1992 4wd SR5 Toyota pickup, and I've been dreaming of this worm gear diff for awhile! And extra props for shooting that in 2wd. Perfect show of its potential.

these helical/torsen style diffs are so good, that i wonder why the heck open diffs are still used.

I like that. It's more aggressive than an LSD while not being as aggressive as a full locker. Seems this might be the best for my street truck that might rarely seem some traction limiting situations.

Please learn the correct terminology. This is an LSD.

Good demonstration of how they work. I have a helical Quaife LSD in my Focus ST.

I've been thinking of getting a torsen rear diff for my lifted subaru forester, but everybody is telling me not to "waste my money since they act like open differentials when 1 tire is off the ground" but I rarely lift tires since I'm not doing EXTREME trails and rock crawling. My main concern is traction when all 4, or both rear wheels are on the ground in low traction situations

Helical diffs are the worst LSDs for low-traction environments. I'm not saying they wont work but you need to first decide what your expectations are.

How are they at highway speeds on ice around corners? Is it open enough under light load to not lock and spin you out?
@Maccaroney

There is no "locking" in any LSD. That being said: a helical LSD is perfect for normal driving because they are they the least aggressive LSDs.

I'm currently looking at differentials for my 2003 Tundra AC RWD and originally going to go with Detroit Truetrack, but came across a bunch of Nitro-Gear master rebuild, ring/pinion and rear pinion setup kits that are supposedly closest to OEM than any other aftermarket brands. Then I noticed Nitro-Gear even makes an LSD. Now it's got me thinking, should I just go with all Nitro-Gear when performing a complete rear differential rebuild or go with the most popular tried to true Eaton Detroit Truetrac?

Truetrac! Don't be a company's R&D department. I've ran Truetracs front and rear for a decade in my Jeep and they never fail me. Why risk it?

Do you think it’s plug and play or think I would have to shim around to get the perfect gear tooth pattern? I wouldn’t be changing from 3.73 gear ratio. Thoughts?

It's extremely disingenuous to call any helical LSD "aggressive". They're the least aggressive LSDs by design.
