I've had 3 sets in a row of the Toyo Open Country RT's. On a 2017 GMC 1500 Z71 with a 6" lift, running 35x12.50r22s, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a 4.5" lift running 35x12.50r20s and a 2019 F250 Limited with a 3.5" lift running 37x12.50r22s. Hands down the BEST BEST BEST tire I have ever run. I'm 43 years old and have been buying off-road tires for 27 years. I've had them all. From BFG ATs & MTs, Kelly Springfield's, Super Swamper's, Nittos, Mickey Thompson's, Pathfinders, Toyo's, Yokohama's, you name it, and I've tried it. I get ridiculous good mileage out of the Toyo Open Country RTs. I just put 60k miles on my most recent set on my F250. I had been hearing tons of stuff on the Ridge Grappler and see a ton of guys running them so I tried a set. Went from the 37s on my F250 down to a set of 35x12.50r22 Ridge Grapplers. I'm a little shocked to hear the guy in the video saying the Ridge Grapplers were quieter. Seriously? Not on my truck. My other complaint was how the Ridge Grapplers handle in the rain. TRASH! I live in Texas and we get big down pours. The only time I drove in heavy rain the truck handled like garbage! I sold the F250 last week and bought a 2022 GMC Sierra Denali 2500. Going strait back to the Open Country RTs. Best off road tire I've ever had. The Ridge Grapplers look cool as hell but I didn't like them. That's my $0.02
Man this comment helps me out so much. I was between these two tires. I had nitto trail grapplers mts and was happy wore them out an went with atturo 375/45r20 which are beautiful on the mud but would not dare to drive in the rain whatsoever. I too live here in texas and needing this for my truck seeing as how my wife will be driving it more. Thanks an now to look into these tires for more info
I’ve had Ridge Grapplers on my F-150 now for 2 years. Do mostly over landing and very happy with them. No issues at all, and get through whatever I challenge them to do!
A tire that is rarely mentioned is the nitto exo grappler. I threw them on my 2018 f350 and love them! Also a hybrid, maybe leaning a bit more towards the MT styling but 2 major things that make them excel over the ridge grappler or RT's: 1) they have the 3-peak mountain snowflake rating for winter and wet conditions (many guys I first hand asked about the the ridge graps said they're plain scary in the wet or snow and here in the vancouver area that is a deal breaker) and 2) They're built for heavy duty trucks like the big heavy diesels. Definetely worth checking out if you have a superduty or cummins etc...as they should out last and out perform both the ridge graps or the RT's in many cases. A real hidden gem. I've had ko2's and open country at2's on other trucks and like these the best so far. At3's could be a new contender too!
I’m running the nitto ridge grapplers on my 19 f250 work truck 25k miles so far ride great and drive on average 50-75 miles of rough oilfield lease roads daily at pretty high speed which normally tear up tires pretty fast but these are holding up very well and I’m super impressed they will be going on my personal vehicle when it needs tires.
I've put over 95,000 miles on two sets of Toyo Open Country R/Ts. 55k on the first and still have a good amount of tread on the second set. The next set will again be Toyo Open Country R/Ts.
2016 Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi RCSB 3.92s 2.5 Bilstein level on 35 Nitto Terra Grapplers G2s and just rounding 90000 miles and the tires still have a little life, level and tires I did when I bought her new. Still on the alignment I had done when I lifted, tires rotated every 7000miles,only balanced twice, still original steering and suspension and brake components. Will be buying the same tire soon. couldn't be happier with this Rig.
Between my JKUR and Ram Rebel I’ve ran Toyo M/T, R/T, AT2 and AT3. The M/T is of course the superior off road tire with good on road manors. The R/T was a great all around except in snowy conditions. Fits nicely as a hybrid tire in Toyo OC line up. AT2 (had 2 sets) was a strong competitive all terrain tire but that new AT3 is a lot better and looks great.
I went from the ridge grappler to the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT (both in 37x12.5/R17) The cooper doesn’t look quite as aggressive and it was a about 1/4” shorter in height BUT it’s made in America by an American company (now more important than it ever has been), significantly lighter in weight and based on my first 20,000 miles on them, they will last approximately 60-70,000 miles with rotation every 6500 miles. I was replacing my ridge grapplers at 45k due to them becoming ice skates in the rain at that point.
I have a 07 Ram 5.9 MegaCab welding rig and switched from Ridge Grappler to Cooper XLT and love the XLT they are lasting longer, love the ride great on lease roads and highway too over 25,000 just over a year and look great still
I have a 2021 F250 with toyo rt in 37/12.5/20 with 54,000 miles on them. They have been great. They are at the end of their life and have been louder the past 20,000 miles.I just purchased a set of Nitto ridge grapplers in the same size.I’m having them put on this week.Hope they last as long as the RT’s and also hope they are not as loud.
The R/T is a great all around tire for towing, everyday driving , dirt and snow. Not very good in ice, but that obvious with the lack of sipping and big tread blocks.
I’ve ran all of these and I’d say the nitto trail grapplers do well on the heavy trucks too. I got similar life out of those as I did my Toyo mts. I have not ran BFGs or Coopers on 3/4 tons yet but on my 1/2 ton I’m currently running stt pros and have ran ko2s and they have lasted a long time! I can imagine it would not be the case on a heavier truck tho..
I've got 40k on mine with roughly 50% tread life. I run them on a 2500 Ram cummins. I'm blown away at how well they wear. I bead balanced them and rotate every 10k. They're noisy but very good tires
I have the Toyo RT’s (E rated) on my ram 2500 and I’m at 49k miles with decent tread life left. I’m fixing to buy another pair and sell these on eBay. I live in very humid and hot Mississippi and haven’t had any issues at all with these tires!!
RT 13.50 37" 20's on my '17 Ram CTD. 30k miles and just slightly less than half tread left. They've worn evenly, ride smoothly and are fairly quiet. Tires are round with one assembly only taking 3/4 ounce to balance. Of course, I always look for Road Force Touch balancing machines. Great tire if your truck sees a lot of street use. My only complaint is that my experience in the snow with them was not good. Puckered me up a few times. Will definitely buy another set.
I have had both and agree with you...I now have the Geolander X-AT and prefer these slightly better to the Ridge grappler. I had the 295 65 R20's, and put 5000 miles on them on my 3" Carli lifted 7.3 and am installing the 37 12.5 20's today.
The Ridge Grapplers are the best I've ever run on my Ram diesels. I just drove, a week ago, through one of the worst and earliest winter storms in Minnesota on my way to Montana. I was driving on 1 inch of ice and sleet mix. A dozen tractor trailers and a slew of cars and trucks had run off the side of the roads. I never slipped once on those surfaces. When my Ridge Grapplers wear out, I'll be buying another set. I also do a lot of hunting and the tires are amazing on mud and snow.
I've got 20k miles on my Ridge Grapplers and faithfully rotate them every 3,500 miles Without question, THE greatest hybrid tires available, hands down...!!!
I’m from TX and farm for a living, so constant mud, huge ruts, bad roads etc etc but in the winters spend 80% of my time in the mountains snowboarding. Been running the RT And I’m on my second set but looking into the Toyo CT and putting a carli and innov8 wheels on it. Wanted to know what y’all or anyone else thinks of the C/T
I have the Ridge Grappler on a 17 Silverado 1500 in a 295-55-20. I have 85,000 miles on them and about 40 percent tread left. Rotated them about 4 or 5 times since I've had em. Will probably last about 100k to 120k miles. I guess that's what you get with a load E tire on a half ton truck.
I got 60k out of my RTs on my 1500 sierra with regular rotations. They also have a tread warranty, you forgot to mention that lol. I went with the nitto terras on my 19 F250 because i wanted the agressive look but regret the road noise a little. I don't take it offroad seriously so my next set will probably be the ridge grapplers.
Tires of this type have been around for a very long time. They have existed as "commercial traction" tires. They have just never been marketed heavenly to the average consumer. Kelly Springfield was the lone exception. They had the DTR back in the early 1990's and then the TSR in the 2010's. Both of these were aggressive hybrids and i have owned multiple sets of each. The TSR was and is fantastic. They are quit, well mannered, very capable off-road, and have very long tread life. So, to me, the Kelly TSR should be credited with starting the modern useful 'hybrid" tire trend not Nitto. Nitto deserves the gold star though for cashing in and reviving a market no one seemed to believe was so large. Back in the 80's and 90's bro trucks use to rock hard core mud tires or other "all terrains" that were designed purely for looks such as the SS Thorn Birds and various other offerings from Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek. Most of these modern "hybrids" perform better off road than the old stuff.
On my first set of R/T's, not impressed with the tread life and spins bad on wet surfaces. No burn outs, easy braking and turning. Might try the M/T's next as they have great reviews.
SMiller5488 I have a set with 55k miles no issues at all only way i seemed to have issues with breaking these tires lose was giving throttle through corners never had any issues in any terrain
yup, I have 25k miles on my RT's, I live in the South where it's hot so they wear faster IMO, TC kicking in a lot when it rains, they spin up pretty easily.
I didn’t know the RT’s had been out so long. I always kinda thought duratracs were the OG hybrid. I’m definitely gonna go with nitto or Toyo on my wrangler jk this time. Just can’t decide between the RT or Trail grappler 🧐 Plus both nitto and toyo are made in my home state of Georgia!
Man one. I had too mt on two trucks and my current ram 2500. My toyo mts where awesome! They were pretty quiet! I switched to ridge grapplers and they make the truck handle funky! I hate them. Have had the two swapped out and they was slightly better but still cause the truck to halve and wonder funky. Mostly at freeway speeds. Maybe its just my luck.
I’ve had two pairs of those Nittos and they wore out in 8 months each time. The second pair delaminated tread within 90 mins of running a dirt road. -a dirt road also run in mini vans by my students...so not good.
I have the Ridge Grapplers on my K5 and I like them so far. Quiet below 50mph and slight hum over 50. I have 325 60 18 so they are wide and I hit a flooded area of a street under a bridge at 55 mph and it got sketchy quick with that short wheelbase K5 but that has less to do with tire design and more to do with the width I chose and the wheelbase of the truck. It wanted to get sideways at 55 LOL. Still waiting to get them off road.
M/Ts hands down ,R/Ts are too slippery on gravel road+on snow and noisy as hell after 7k miles, R/T are wearing faster than M/Ts also. I will have a hard time changing for another brand and model M/ts are the way to go
This is great because I have been wondering about the performance of the Nittos as compared to Toyo. We have been using Toyo Open Country AT's with great success at our business. It sounded like you said the Toyo was best at the end. Did I hear that correct? I'm going with a USA made tire and if both are made in America, I'm leaning toward the Nitto based on your statement that it is the quietest.
I live in the southeast where we get a lot of rain and water sitting on the road. I want a tire that is good for these conditions, but also aggressive and will do well in the sand and other off-road scenarios. I have been looking at the Toyo MTs, but would like some feedback and other options.
Toyo MTs lack the siping to really do well in rain, and Toyo Rts have the same problem. If you want something that will perform in those conditions, go with the Nitto Recon Grappler, Toyo AT3 or Toyo RT Trail.
I got a Ram 2019 Ram . I pull a 34 ft travel trailer dry weight is 11000 lbs. Whish tires do you think I can get good tread milage from the Nitto Ridge Grappler or the Toyo Open Country R.T. I also want to put after market wheels on. Look at the 20x10 with a negative 19. Like to put a 35x12.50 on my 2019 Ram . Will it fit on a stock height 2500.
What size tire can I put on my 2018 Chevy 2500hd with out having to put a leveling kit or lift kit on it I’ll be using my stock 20” wheels I would like to put a 275/65/20 on it but not sure if they will rub stock tires are 265/60/20 thanks
I had a 2014 ram diesel 6" lift on toyo 37 MTs i got 60,000 miles on 3 sets i put on that truck over the years i had it . what is all this noise about short lifespan ? they change the compound or something ??
Have you tried the Geolander X-AT? Just mounted a set. Seems like a good contender for best mix use tire. Long time KO2 Fan so will be interesting how these stack up. Nitto Grappler has a 2 Ply sidewall vs Toyo RT 3 ply. That was the main reason to not run the Nitto tire for me.
How are you liking those Yokohama X-ATs? Looking to upgrade my tires but don't know what to get. Definitely want to go with a hybrid tire but can't make a decision as there are so many lol
@@Daniel-pc1er They are quality built tires... I've done a couple reviews on them on our YT channel. Overall they have done well. I wish they were 3 peak snowflake rated. But they do awesome in deep snow.
@@TruckCamper that is true, the 3PMSF would have been nice, but I'm sure they had to compromise one thing over the other. How to these tires handle soft sand? If you've driven in sand of course.
Nittos have either 2 ply or 3 ply sidewalls depending on their size and load range. My 35x12.5 r17 load range E RG tires have 3 ply sidewalls. I wish Nitto advertised the sidewall plies for each tire size on their web-site.
Neither. Get Cooper AT3 XLT! A tire purposely engineered for diesel trucks. They ride great, are super quiet, and have amazing traction off-road. And they’ll wear far better and last longer than any other off-road tire.
How about weight differences with the common tires you guys run? I'm assuming this would help understand about "stopabilty" and/or milage. Also, what kind of milage differences from stock are people are seeing? Granted this depends on alot of different factors.
These big diesel trucks that are made to tow 14,00-30,000 pounds don't really mind tire weight when it comes to stopping or starting. Tread pattern seems to play more of a role in the rolling resistance and reduction in fuel mileage than anything else. The more aggressive the tread, the larger the degrease in fuel economy is.
I've considered those tires for my next set. I am currently running a set of Ridge Grapplers on my Duramax but the Cooper AT3 XLTs have peaked my interest. What do you like about them? I'm sure they get better fuel mileage on road compared to the Ridge Grapplers?
Great video as always, got the notification. I WAS interested in the Nitto, after you guys said it is super quiet. But, when I contacted Nitto about a mileage warranty, they don't offer anything.. they lost me on that deal unfortunately.
It's rare to warranty any set of tires, especially in these larger sizes. Sadly it's very difficult to prove poor tread-wear wasn't due to bad alignment or a burnout etc, so most of the time those warranties are just for show.
@@CJCOffRoad I understand. I see that Toyo has a 45k warranty on their RT and BFG with the A/T. I've always had BFG but wanted to change it up, but wanted to enjoy the Nitto's quietness. Thanks for responding!
@@deanieweenie116 its most common for you to see tread wear warranties with all terrains but not usually hybrid tires or mud terrains. They know youre probably going to be brutal to tires and generally the all terrains will hold up longer so they can afford to warranty them.
Any longevity comparisons between those 2 for ram diesels or other heavy duty trucks. Have heard really good things on the RT's for mileage wear. Didn't know if the ridge grapplers were as good?
@@CJCOffRoad Have you guys ever run Recon Grapplers? Main reason I ask is the weight capacity is about 500# more per tire (3650ish). I have a truck camper so that is important, although my current KO2's are in that 3150 range (35's) that most of the others are. Quiet is important but my older KO2's probably not as quiet as they used to be and my brothers RT's don't bother me. Recons look like they'd be quiet as well. The look of Recon and Ridge Grapplers as well as RT's all have a nice aggressive appearance.
That truck is on 37/13.5/20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers with 5.5" Backspace 20x9.5 Trail Ready wheels: www.cjcoffroad.com/Trail-Ready-BL20-20-x-9-Simulated-BeadLOOK-Wheel-p/bl20.htm
CJC Off Road no question they’re the same size but it just seemed like ridge grappler was just a little bulkier. I know manufacturers will produce a tire that’s the same size but they tell all vary in true dimensions, some a bit taller or wider.
CJC Off Road gotcha, the more aggressive pattern and side walls is probably what it is. Thanks for the info, I’m actually making a decision to pull the trigger on one of these tires on my truck.
I've got 40k on mine and still nearly 50% tread. They've been unbelievable. I run them on a 2500 ram cummins. They have started to get a bit noisy but I expected that
@@johnclark7107 run away from the BFG run run fast. I’ve had toyo at3 on a Toyota Tundra and I loved the tires no problems. Before that I had the BFG ko2 and had to have them rebalanced about 4 times.
