NJ Devils Trade John Marino To Utah & We Draft A Goalie?!?

The New Jersey Devils have traded defenseman John Marino and a 2024 5th Round Pick to the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for a 2024 2nd Round Pick and a 2025 2nd Round Pick.
The NJ Devils then drafted goaltender Mikhail Yegorov with that 2nd Round Pick.
Is Brett Pesce to the Devils a done deal?
Who will replace Bahl?
Why did the Devils draft another goalie?

Maybe the goalie depth is for future trades? TBH I’m not that educated in trades for any sport. I only love hockey and this is the first time I’ve ever paid this much attention.

I doubt they've given up on all five goalies in the system. Maybe they're planning to trade one of them? I wonder how much input Brodeur has on these picks. Still hoping they get Zadorov INSTEAD of Pesce. Or both.

@bted I do not know that there is any "plan" in place. It is starting to seem more and more like helter skelter. I can't see Zadorov at this point. Pesce will happen barring some unforeseen event.

Ace, Holding out hope that Fitz gets Pesce for no more than $1.5 million more than we paid Marino. And we go all in on Bertuzzi. Schmid AND Holtz for Paul Cotter...who is actually worse than Holtz. Ugh!

Understand where you’re coming from Ace being baffled by picking a goaltender because regardless that exposes the scouting team. However, a week ago I was telling my friend I would like to pick Yegorov. Not with the 10th pick tho lol. But my logic is literally because he was the top goaltender prospect and cause he’s Russian 😂. I do feel like the best goalies today are coming out of Russia like Vasilevsky, shesterkin, Bob, and Sorokin. So when Markstrom is done, daws or one of the others (now that Schmid is gone) can be ready to take the net for a bit until Yegorov is ready to be our elite goaltender if kept and developed. No way to tell how he’ll do for sure but that’s just the vision and justification that popped in my head when thinking who to draft. A little Russian stereotyping😅

@Jay-s7d It certainly seems like some of these Russian goalies are turning out to be studs. Nashville has another one in the making with Askarov. Many fans are furious the Devils drafted Holtz instead of Askarov.

Would you sign Bertuzzi to play on a third line with Mercer and Palat? I would bring back Tierney as an economic signing for 4th line center to play with Lazar and Macdermid. Pretty good face off win percentage. Or....Would you go big game hunting 😂 and trade Mercer for a top 6 forward?

@walterramirez4443 I would defer to Keefe on Bertuzzi, but there are other guys out there as well. Who knows where Cotter is going to slot in. BIG GAME HUNTING has not been as exciting as I (and many others) were hoping for

I do think Pesce is a better defenseman than Marino and will help solidify the defense. If we can get another defender like a Zadorov or Dillon with a little more sand, that'd be great to make the team heavier and more violent on top of better defensively. As for our drafting department, I definitely think we need to replace Scott Clemmensen as our goalie scout. The goalies he has help picked haven't worked out. We also need to rid ourselves of Dave Rogalski. How he wasn't fired along with Ruff is shocking. Getting rid of Rogalski is even more vital IMO. Rogalski has continuously failed at developing ALL our goalie prospects. I don't care if he's a friend of Marty Brodeur. It's nepotism at this point. He needs to go. The chances of not hitting on one of the goalies since Shero was here is shameful. And lastly on the trade, eh. Marino is gone and it makes room for better defenders and more physicality to come in. On Yegorov, a pick is a pick. It'll be years until we know anything for sure.

@MrZeek1519 Agreed on the D. Clemmer has definitely missed if he was behind those draft picks. Rogalski seems to be bulletproof. Nepotism runs the world my man! Glad to see Marino is being upgraded. I hope Yegorov pans out, because apparently the Devils think all of the goalies we already had aren't!

Easy to see that these are salary dumps to sign Pesce (maybe Tanev, but I don't like his age). Alternatively, I think Matt Roy might be the play. Marino was good but a bit too easy to play against. Planning for today and tomorrow simultaneously.

@johnm6117 Seems redundant to me. Especially using the 2nd round pick on one. Hopefully the kid turns out to be a stud. The Scouting Department needs to be overhauled. Apparently we whiffed on many goalie picks, and the #7 Overall used on Holtz was a major waste as well

Considering Smid is out the door now, this draft pick doesn't seem that bad to me. Poulter is not that great of a bet, so I'd say that Daws, Malek, and Yegorov you're betting on 3 future goalies. Allen and Makrstrom are going to be done in the not-so-distant future. Yegorov is going to be spending time in Boston University, so he won't be taking time away from the current goalies in the AHL. We can't keep complaining about not having goal-tending and then having bad luck with trading or signing free agents all the time.

I don't have a problem with betting on a few different young goalies in the hopes for them breaking into the NHL 3-4 years down the line. It's so hard to predict how goalies will turn out

Gotta chill out on the "edger, more violent" comment before you burst a blood vessel, bro lol. As you saw the rest of the draft pan out, that's all Fitz drafted. Even Cotter brings that edge for the bottom line. I reserve judgement until after free agent moves are made because that will tell you what plans were laid out and how it all pans out. The moves made today were clearing room of guys who were on the outs anyway or, like Holtz, weren't going to be playing top 6 minutes which is a waste of having him. (Plus the NHL didn't come clamoring for Holtz so getting a young guy to fill a need was smart). Schmid is out so getting that goalie in the 2nd was the right play, especially as one of the best available goalies in the draft.

@WaltBTB Blood vessels are bursting! I am glad we will be HEAVIER, EDGIER, MORE VIOLENT in the future. Getting Cotter brings that immediately. I want to see if there is an other guys that check these boxes brought in. We killed Holtz' trade value. Totally mismanaged. Fitzgerald openly ripped him apart in a Press Conference midseason! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!? Bewildering stuff. I hope Cotter becomes a machine for the Devils. At a minimum in this deal, you COMPLETELY TORCHED a #7 overall pick. Drafting another goalie?!? So all the guys in the system currently aren't the answer, right?!? More wasted draft capital....

@@runninwiththedevils I've been VERY on the fence about any of the goalies in the system right now, to tell the truth. Maybe one of them is going to stand out and step into that true starter's role, but it doesn't hurt to have someone drafted who could also possibly end up as that stud in net. I don't know how much of Holtz's issues were coaching or how much was simply him not having that next level to be a top NHLer, but yeah his value was trashed, unfortunately. But getting Cotter helps as they need that sandpaper guy who is also good on the PP and has been deceptively valuable in Vegas.

@finessepapi_188 Not necessarily. There are some NHL ready guys in the draft. It is not as much of a criticism as it is just overall disappointment. The disappointment is that we are now talking about "how good we are going to be in the future". This is the problem. My patience is DONE. What has Fitzgerald done to move us closer to the Cup?!? He keeps kicking the can down the road to look to THE FUTURE. WIN NOW or get fired. Fitzgerald has had a lot of time.

Happy to see the cap space filled up. Wish Marino got somewhere else than the soulless "Hockey Club" but maybe he becomes a trailblazer in Salt Lake. But with the squad of young goaltenders we have, I have a feeling that we'll be looking to get something from either Daws or Schmid, the young goalies that have some NHL experience but never panned out (in the eyes of the org, don't get me started on how goalie development was mismanaged).

Markstrom is a short term fix with a short window. Adding a goalie of the future and hoping that he can be the future if he is as highly touted as others are saying makes a lot of sense. But the other trade that happened is completely mind boggling

@@runninwiththedevils There’s no excusing the Holtz and Schmid trade as far as I can tell. But goalies are a tricky thing, and if the Devils saw something in Yegorov that makes him the goalie of the future, of course they need to take him. I hear you on the other goalies; third rounder and two fourth rounders that could have been used on someone else. I guess I just think that drafts can be like that sometimes in the middle rounds. I’m more concerned with the Devils goalie coaching and development than I am with the picks themselves.

The only pipedream I have left is Fitzy was unaware that Zadorov and Vancouver were parting ways before going after Pesce so aggressively, and will pivot to grab Z instead. Zadorov, Dillon, and a gritty winger in Duclair would be a beautiful thing.

Let’s hope the real rumors are true. Fitz tried desperately to get Vancouver to trade for Marino and include Zadorov negotiating rights. He is trying and trying to keep it under the radar. Keep your fingers crossed. I won’t mind Dillon too but what I heard was the draft pick was largely influenced by having future ability for Zadorov to teach this kid how to Sasquatch properly. Get off the main stream nonsense rumors and pray they pull off their plan!

Would be hilarious if Utah picks up Peace in FA. There’s no guarantee he signs here. And then we get a Palat panic signing as a result lolo said the same thing with the goalie. Why do we need six goalie prospects to maybe get one? I don’t know that this kid projects to be any better than the other goalies we already have either. Our forward depth is abysmal now, could have really used a decent prospect in the wings to crack the roster in 1-2 years but instead we got a goalie so that we have enough to fill out three minor league teams

@reyrage15 It seems like Pesce to the Devils is a done deal. There were too many people reporting about it for it all to be BS. But who knows, maybe someone else swoops in and steals him from the Devils. The goalie thing is a huge mystery. The organization must believe that NOW (with Schmid being dealt) Daws, Poulter, Brennan and Malek are all not the next guy. I am baffled across the board

Poulter was undrafted. He was a free agent signing. Schmid didn't impress me this season when Vitek shit the bed, he had a chance to take the job away from him and he didn't do that. Daws has shown he could be a decent backup goalie, but never proved he could be a full time starter. He's had plenty of starts to show that he should start and couldn't beat out Schmid.

I dont understand your dislike with futures?? You need good drafting to keep the window open for longer. We already have good offense we have no issue scoring goals. We have the goalie already even though markstrom was not my pick i prefered Ullmark. We need good defense. Dougie is an offensive dman Hughes is the same. Pesce is good choice and if we are lucky to get get Big Z as well who brings the violence we should be good to then usher these young kids into the team and develop them. Big z and pesce makes this team a contender this year. Anton keeps us a contender when big Z or pesce go out of there prime or when there older

you were 100% right they didnt believe in schmid which is why him and holtz were dealt for some size for what im guessing is the 4th line, paul cotter is a good responsible 2 way player thats 6 2 213. so we did get some size in that deal. im sure you will have another video on this soon but im in the same boat as you im getting frustrated with these moves, all i gotta say is fitzy seems dead set on free agency as his big game hunting ground. we have the cap but hes making a pretty big gamble

We kind of knew this was coming. Pesci improves our blue line and he has done a lot of winning down there in Raleigh over the past few years. I like the trade. As far as goalies…let’s hope we hit on one of the six we have in our system now. I like the direction that we are going. Try to be more optimistic

This is why I found it hard to get super excited about Markstrom. Fitz did an awesome job of getting a bargain on a B+ goalie. The next move should have been trading the pick to bring in a win-now piece. Had a feeling he wouldn't do it. I hope I'm wrong, but I dont see any big splashes coming from this guy in free agency.

Dear Ace, i'm really loving all your videos and your passion for our beloved NJD. I'm a Swiss citizen and fan following our team since 2005. I really feel your frustration and understand your thoughts on the win now mode. It truly makes sense to me, however I believe you're really, heavily going for it this year as if there is no tomorrow in 1/2 years. The moves we have done thus far are not spectacular in the win now mode mindset, but I think they truly make us better along the way. I guess what i wanna say is that there might be a middle ground to it and it might not be as clear cut/going all in as you might wish. Our beloved NJD are well set for an amazing future! We fleeced utah with 2 2nd round picks for a declining john marino. The goalie we drafted was on one of the worst ushl teams. He was the # 1 ranked NA goaltender..not sure why u are complaining lol

NONE of them were going to be the next guy?!? I cannot get excited for guys that will be here years down the line, ESPECIALLY when we already had so many goalies in the mix.
