A long awaited "I" Beam job. The last time I installed "I" Beams I made a video solely for use on estimates. Needless to say that video totally sucks. I made that one BEFORE there WAS A YOU TUBE. I put the raw footage on "PHOTO BUCKET" in case I lost it. A few years went bye before I editing and my editing was - So here's the reality between Carbon Fiber Strips and "I" Beams and MY PRICEING for an "I" Beam is costs LESS THAN a Carbon Fiber Strip. horizontal

Best video EVER for homeowners needing a proper and permanent solution to an issue like this. Outstanding camera work, too. I-beams the only way to go.

Having seen those carbon fiber strips, I have wondered how in the world that it can compare to the strength of a steel I-beam. I'm glad to hear you say it's a "band-aid" solution. I have often thought the same thing, but I am no expert. Thanks so much for these videos. I've watched too many of them now! LOL.

Thanks. Actually I've more time to do these now. You Tube wasn't what it is 5 or 6 years ago. Whole new ball game and I do these from job start to finish, one job at a time. I have years of unedited rough footage and will be making full versions now. I truly Thank you for your support. - Daniel J OConnor

Daniel J. OConnor - I learned my lesson not to judge RU-vidrs by one video. Do you plan to write an e-book or something like that explaining in details how you do your job, dealing with a different scenarios , different job sites ? I know you do a video conferencing, but I rather had something to read , instead trying to remember what was said 2 days ago. Thanks ! Keep on rocking !

You tube had a criteria when first being created. Basically 2 minutes. And those/mine that are really cut up were done before there was a You Tube. Uh, but primarily I've more time on my hands to make videos and edit. I'm getting a bit old and let my crews do jobs. My 60th birthday was March 21st. Hey Dave, did you know I do face time estimates? I phone or Android? U.S. and Canada? I do charge $350 but you will know exactly what needs to be done and why and you can tell a Contractor what you want him to do and how much you will pay them. People have saved thousands. If I tell u the job should cost $10K and you tell your prospective Contractor you are willing to pay $6k? And YOU tell them what YOU want them to do? Priceless. I'm here if you need me and if you'd like to set up a face time estimate give us a call 888 808 9523. Thanks, Daniel J OConnor

The title was a bit misleading. I was actually hoping to learn a bit about the use of carbon fiber materials in home construction. All I learned here about carbon fiber, is your complete disdain for carbon fiber strips. Whatever those are. Still though, I did learn how to correctly install a steel I-beam. Thanks for posting. Update. Just saw another video that you did that was what I was looking for. Thanks again for your videos. I thoroughly enjoy learning, and you are one heck of a teacher. Just recently discovered your videos. To the point, honest and very informative. Wife and I are looking to buy a second house and seems like every house we look at has fucked up basement walls. Even a newer 10 yo home we looked at in a $300k subdivision selling for $165k had shifting walls. Something about not being tied in right. Realtor said it would be 50k to 60k just to fix the walls. Smh. Several other houses built in the 70s had 2 or more walls pushing in with cracks going right through the block from the floor to the ceiling. Blocks snapped in half. WTF. After watching your videos I have a better understanding what's going on in these houses. I don't even know how this shit gets passed the building inspectors. Thank you for everything you are doing to help inform us.

Thank you for this video! I have a customer with an exterior covered porch. Brick wall with stucco on it. Half of it below grade. Anyhow it's caving in. I'm going to use a modified method to support the deck joists above, and shore up the walls while adding pressure on them. I'm planning on building a 2x6 pressure-treated wall one foot on center. Brace it at the joists at the top. Use joist hangers so it could hold tension towards the brick wall. Then I'm going to move along and jack the bottom of the 2x6 wall until it comes into contact with the bottom course of the brick wall. This may help level the brick, but it will definitely support it from falling in, and I'll take care of the decking support above. Thank you for your video. It inspired me to develop this! If you're so inclined and can think of a better method please let me know. Best wishes. Be safe.

Carbon fiber is an attempt at foundation stabilization with a side effect of epoxy stink. it attempts holds the wall in its current position. The strip actually needs additional movement to engage. If you can live with the size of wide flange beams "I beams", they are probably going to be more robust.

Well if you're in Jersey or East Pennsylvania give us a call. If not I can do a face time or Skype consult and estimate so you know what it should cost and you know what needs to be done and you won't be calling contractors to hear what they will do and how much they will charge you. You will tell them what YOU want them to do and how much YOU are going to pay. More or less YOU INTERVIEW a Contractor. I might tell you the Job should cost TEN Thousand and YOU can offer to pay them SIX Thousand. Thus begins the negotiations but YOU have the upper hand. Definitely recommend a 6x6 or angle iron at the top. The company that did mine in the 80s used C-channel and a 2x10 instead of the 6x6 at the top. The pressure eventually broke the 2x10 and have bent several of the beams. Now I have to spend another 15k to replace what was already done.

I-beams and carbon fiber strips are as much repair as bandaids are to cuts on your finger. The difference between a finger and a house is your finger will repair itself under the bandaid; the house will just weep and fail more.

Daniel OConnor, Good day to you. I live out here in Missouri and my basement has a small separation/crack between the blocks, horizontally. Your method of Ibeam repair looks great. What's the distance you have between Ibeams? I'm looking for your video on installing a sump tank etc. Yeah, I'm a DIYer, but I have done construction for 15 - 20 years in San Diego and then I moved to Missouri and became an Operating Engineer. I can follow everything you're saying, but I never heard you talk about the distance between Ibeams. I'll get searching, thanks Daniel OConnor.

Daniel - would you weld the rebar to the I-beam and the L bracket to make it permanent? Also, why not painting the metal, especially the rebar , prior the installation to prevent rust from eating away the metal ?
@DanielJOConnor
@DanielJOConnor 7 лет назад
No to welding. No reason to. Damn I beam isn't going anywhere , EVER. It's pressed against the footer and is now encased in concrete. 4 inches deep. People pay $900 per for a Carbon Fiber. I charge $750 per I beam. Did 12 in 2 days me and a HELPER. $9,000 for 2 days? $500 for helper? $8,500 net for me? Keep in mind I've 3 crews all working on jobs. And no paint. But thanks for the questions. - Daniel J OConnor

Daniel J. OConnor - by no means I'm trying undermine your craftsmanship, rather the other way around it. I prefer quality and detail over low price, but it's hard to see that now days. Thanks for your response, I'll keep you in mind for the next project involving waterproofing !
@DanielJOConnor
@DanielJOConnor 7 лет назад
I didn't think you were questioning my work. Actually your thoughts and questions have great merit. A coating of epoxy on the steel and welding it together also has merit. Yet think about it. For purpose of its use here, can the steel ever corrode in yours or mine or our great, great, great Grandchildren's lifetime? Will it ever move with all the pressure on it? Coatings and welding are for major structures like bridges and industrial forming. The welding is just to keep the re bar from moving when the concrete is poured. Coatings do ad longevity but are also used to prevent rust from beading thru to surface. These questions speak volumes about your integrity and drive to be a Top Shelf Contractor. - Daniel J OConnor
@DanielJOConnor
@DanielJOConnor 7 лет назад
I did answer this to someone else. Think about it. Basement. Rust doesn't bleed up. Goes down. The rebar and angle iron are set in concrete when the job is done. If you look you will see both are 2 - 3 inches below what shall be the finished floor. It's a Basement. Yes welding and grinding and painting is better but totally and completely unnecessary. And let us all not forget about having to haul around welding equipment in your truck. - Daniel J OConnor

Hi! Thank you so mu for this video, it’s been so helpful, if you were in the Kansas City area, I’d love to have you come out and take a look at a foundation on a house we are interested in buying. The concrete foundation has some leaning on one wall and 4 or 5 steel I beams were installed (incorrectly we think) and small amounts of water come in through cracks in the foundation when it rains. Our inspectors didn’t seem worried about it at all and made it sound like just by sealing the cracks with an epoxy, all would be fine. We however are worried that the wall will continue to lean in despite the steel beams being there. I guess my question is, how worried should we be about this or should we try to reinstall the beams correctly then reseal cracks and regrade around the foundation? I’ve called around to a few local companies and no one will even give me an idea or look at my inspection report without coming out and seeing it in person, which I understand. But since we down yet own the home, it’s not realistic to try and schedule a consultation until after we close on the house. I would love any thoughts you might have on this!

I bought a house in 2016 that had some cracked walls but the house is at the top of a hill and water all runs away from the house. If it's not leaking water, don't be scared. Mine hasn't gotten any worse and is dry as a bone. You can do an I/H-beam repair like this video shows without tearing into the footer. Just drill a couple holes and put rebar in, put a 2x8" block of wood against the rebar, then use a 12 or 20 ton hydrolic jack like shown here and push the wall back over the course of a couple days, then hydrolic cement the crack. Cake! Don't be scared if it's your dream house, but get an inspectors opinion too!

Oh Boy, ask yourself why I wouldn't? Why I don't have a video on Stone Foundations? Stone on Stone old school is the best damn Foundation on the Planet. Can't remember the last Stone Job I did. Yes I have done many but not in a long time. Yes they do have issues but I'd have to see what the issues are and know what you need. DO KEEP IN MIND, most stone foundations were done by different Masons. There were no 100 home housing developments back then. There were slackers back then as there are now those foundations do have a few issues, like falling down. It's all in the original mix of cement. 1 part Portland to 3 parts sand with 1/3 part lime. Lasts forever. Of course the cheapo, new be, think they no betters who didn't no shit did the 1 part Portland 4 - 5 - 6 part sand nonsense and the Mortar between the Stones is now sand. I do Face Time and Skype consultations and estimates. The Charge is $350 but what you save yourself from disaster is priceless. - Daniel J OConnor

I had plans to lower my basement floor, 90 years old home block foundation, upon inspection I found one wall beginning to bow inward, I want to do this to straighten it out being the driveway is on the outside, ones the wall of straight my thought would be to either cut upon pin and fill the wall to stabilize than do the underpinning, or leaving the I beams in benching this wall and underpinning the remains 3 sides to lower the floor height, any advice would be greatly appreciated

Question on the direction of the floor joists ... in videos and photos of i-beam installation, I always see the joists running TOWARD the wall. @donaldlee6760

Just guessing here, but if the upper floor joists are parallel to the wall, then add 16-inch blocks (or whatever the joist spacing is) between floor joists so you have effectively built a new floor joist perpendicular to the old joists. That would be a lot of cutting but your floor would be ridiculously stiff and you keep your headroom. Another idea is run perpendicular joists running under the old floor joists, nailed into the bottom old floor joists, and flat instead of vertical (like the old floor joists are). You would lose 1.5 inches of headroom doing this. Lastly a combination of both, particularly run a long/uncut perpendicular floor joist flat (so you lose 1.5 inches headroom) for each steel I-beam. Once the wall is pushed out, then consider removing the long perpendicular joists but leave the 16-inch blocking. This returns your headroom after the wall is pushed back but the steel I-beams are supported in the perpendicular direction. Be sure to keep the ground from getting wet outside the wall so there is not a huge force trying to push the wall back in all over again.

Nice video! What's the tool you used to jack the beam against the wall?

That looks like a great plan BUT what about when it's bowed out at the top?? My foundation blocks have a 2" gap at the top. The first quote I had to fix the cracks and reinforce it was $11k. Sorry, that's not happening! lol

What if the wall was sheared approximately 2" about 3.5' from the floor? Would the steel crack the block at the shear line?

I would be interested in a response to this question, I have the same issue in my basement. First block above the floor has slid inward about 1.5 in... then the same wall has 3 in bow inward at the first line.

Can be fixed but not by using the i beam system. Would have to go the route he initially made mention of. (Exterior excavation then push walls, put vertical rebar in and fill cells in block with concrete. Then waterproof , drains, gravel, and backfill).

Is that 4" I beam? The wall looks high, or is that because the footer is very high? I'm doing the same thing to my house in the next week or so.

Did you end up putting ibeams in your house? Im in the same situation and was wondering if I should really jack them against the wall, or just support and fill with grout

What size I beam do you use? And is this a viable option for a red brick foundation?
@DanielJOConnor

4X4 but I wouldn't use them on Brick. Too much pressure. You can do I Beams on Brick but go lighter. 3X3. You would also go closer together 3 ft center. BUT, and I hate even having to say this, the characteristics of Brick in that there is generally no footer and the concrete floor is mute, Carbon Fiber Strips would be best. You can not push Brick back into place unless you want to dig outside. So keeping the Brick from further movement is all you might want to do. Of course the Carbon Fiber MUST BE INSTALLED properly. Concrete and Cider block corrodes and granules of sand and cinder loosen so the strip can't hold. Brick is Clay. Yes some clay brick disintegrates but rarely. Carbon Fiber Strips will hold a brick wall forever. ( IF INSTALLED PROPERLY ) - Daniel J OConnor

Hey Dan, I have a customer with a similar issue, and I was wondering how you'd deal with bowing by the staircase. I can't slip any steel along the wall where the stairs run. What would you do?

I can't help you with your question, but you sound like a pro, so I wanted to ask you something... Generally speaking, what kind of I-beam do you usually use? Like, for a regular basement, 10 ft beam. What Web, Flange Width, and lbs/ft do you use?
@andrewrossnagel9433
@andrewrossnagel9433 Год назад
@@Vegan4EverythingW4x13 is typical. I beams are sized by how much they weigh per foot. So a W4x13 is 4 inch width by 13 lbs per foot.

Why dont they do this when the home is built. if the wall is surrounded in earth, sooner or later it will start to move inward i would think.

Could the I-beams be removed after the wall straightens back out? Or would it just pop back out? Wondering in case wanting to sell the home.
