This black man in his mid 40s found so much joy in their music at a time when he was an elementary school kid dealing with bullying and a tense home life. Good music is good music. I remember this like it was yesterday.
I'm a 37 black man that had a white stepsister and remember their posters on her wall circa 1990-91. Married with two kids, but probably belong with my crush who is ten years older. All time favorite song
they said in an interview years later that backstage after that performance they were all emotional, some even crying, realizing they'd nailed it with such a tough audience. Knowing that makes watching the performance kinda emotional for me
Yeah looking at this performance them boys could go, but looking at the crowd seeing it was all about Color, some might disagree but let's face it if it were new edition them folks be out of there seats period jumping, I'm African American and I always liked NKOTB they did there thing
Honestly, I think the crowds back then didn't care if you were black or white. If you knew how to put on a fire show and you were talented and somewhat authentic, then I think that's all that mattered.
Cause they worked for years to get here. And thier first album flopped and nobody wanted to hear their music. Record companies kept turning them down. Donny talks about in an interview with sway.
Their choreography was next level. Too bad they weren't singing this one live, but I'm still blown away by their command of the stage! What a performance!
I'm African American and always thought the new kids were some bad brothers, there moves were slick, to me they reminded me of new edition, I really grew up on new edition since 83 but I heard new kids and got hooked quick, I really don't understand why the crowd is sitting, it makes me wonder was it a color thing just saying white or black these brothers did there thing period
This is true. It was a show, somewhat like Soul Train, that showcased black artists (or artists that performed black music/R&B/soul). The main difference between Apollo and Soul Train was that Apollo was a talent show. If Apollo accepted an artist, they were said to "make it" because the Apollo audience is so brutal. Because New Kids were an R&B act, they were able to showcase their talents (especially as a new group) on Apollo. They said that when Apollo accepted them, they knew they made it.
drolsitsirhc true joey said that they felt like they reached thier goal after the apollo performance it was thier first televised appearance Maurice starr sold them as an r and b act and alot of ppl in the industry at the time thought white ppl singing black music was a joke nkotb faced alot of rejection before this performance
Showtime at the Apollo is one of the toughest audience to please, I remember watching this show when i was 10 and they booed good artists when the audience wasn't feeling their performance.
That was a great performance. It's really cool because they're careers were sort of riding on it too and they killed it. Whoever made up the choreography was a genius
jonathan bailey yeah wasn't it there first live performance under the name new kids on the block i think before everyone heard but never saw them they did kill it
@@nicolerafaella6480 Darrin Hewitt was the choreographer. But Jennifer Lopez was a back up dancer for them before becoming a fly girl for In living colour
@@torreyvest987 We all remember this. :) Maurice was trying to sell his new boy band formula to the black audiences first. I remember just being sucked right into them when I was 13 years old and I've never even thought of looking back. I kept all of my New Kids memorabilia just because I knew I could never replace any of it.
Who knew this would be their iconic dance? I remember watching this back then. Never thought I'd be talking about it 30+ years later. Where did the time go?
The Apollo was famous for being notoriously difficult to perform for an audience at. Especially on TV. The audience would be either dead during great performances or over the top in their response...and that's just with the black artists. Imagine being non-black performing on the show! This is my 1st time seeing this performance (2019) at age 40 and I am blown away that they accepted these jamming white boys immediately as soon as they hit the stage and continued to show love. It is well-known (even now) that if you make it at the Apollo, you can make it anywhere. Real talk. Even Bruno Mars stressed about performing there before he did his concert special in 2017 or 2018 because even he knew the legend of Apollo.
I African American but I think it was more or a racial thing, it's New York, if you look at the audience they were dead, if it had been new edition, or some other they'd have been up damn near bouncing around
@@corneilmadison9436 not necessarily so bro. All you would have to do is loose some momentum and the crowd would easily turn on you. Not for nothing new edition did loose some momentum in 88 when new kids came on the scene.
i ve always been a big fan i admire their tenacity and perseverance they proved although you get knocked down you keep getting up you will succeed....joey said after this performance when they went too the back they we re all soo emotional with success and happiness donny had tears of joy they got turned down by record labels had the first album flop go nkotb forever
NKOTB inspired me when I was very young! They work hard and determined to keep doing their work inspite of some haters. But they are very loved more than the naysayers!
Considering how tough this venue was, I dont think they could have aced it without Jordan. He literally danced his way into the audience. Mind you im not a Jordan fan imo
I saw them live for the third time last nigt during their Magic Summer Tour and I was able to touch Joey and Danny's hand as they walked through the crowd. 😊 Watching this Apolo performance and seeing last nights show just proves that they were not just a fad. They still have IT!
These guys have some serious talent! Dancing and energy! I cant imagine the pressure to perform being the spot light, no background lights, TVs or distractions. I give these guys major credit!!
Man I fucking L O V E them. They’re so LIT! I’m so mad I didn’t know til recently how talented they were. I was paying them dust, DUST I tell you! 🤦🏾♀️😭 However irregardless of me being sleep and late as hell on them, I still really enjoy them. For real. Great job gentlemen, y’all slay and KEEP slaying guys!
I was just thinking about when i broke my ankle when i was 11 in 1989, in the kitchen, "trying" to do the leg swing thing during the oh ih oh oh, oh oh oh oh part. OMG THAT HURT SO BAD AND EVERYONE LAUGHED AND LAUGHED! IT WAS PRETTY DAMN HILARIOUS! So much so that i am still laughing at the age of 41.
Oh God, I remember as a pre-teen how I was totally in love with NKOTB. I would almost pass out when I either saw them on TV or heard them on the radio. I bought every teeny bop magazine they were in and joined their fan club. I was so in love with Jordan, damn he was fine. One Christmas. back in 89, my dad bought me a VHS of a concert of theirs. The best Christmas I ever had. My sister stole the damned VHS.
I was born in 1980. My teen sisters loved NKOTB. They had posters and magazine pictures all over their room and played the hell out of their cassettes. Oh, and they even had Barbie dolls. I hated their guts and would tease my sisters. The funny thing is, I had the same hair and ducktail and left earing that Jordan had. I was probably jealous.
In fourth grade my BFF would raise her hand and if she got ignored to long she would start waving her arm like they move their legs...it was so funny and the teacher always noticed her LOL...OMG I FEEL SO OLD
@Emna Feleh, they were like the thing in terms of up & coming boy bands. They even had a cartoon show in the early 90's I used to watch when I was like 9 or 10 years old. I'm like if it were not for NKOTB there probably would not of been groups like Nsync, Backstreet boys & One direction, my opinion.
I'm from Boston & know these guys quite well. I played the APOLLO a couple of times except it didn't go so well🤦♂️🤣. Yet leading up to that first time I played there back in 1997 I had this footage dam near on loop studying what it was going to take🙏🏻💯
Their first album flopped. They came back with their second "hangin tough" and if this didnt work it was over. Their song "Please don't go girl" picked up traction and they went out to promote. Apollo was notorious for booing people off stage and sending them off stage in shame. They rehearsed hard for 2wks before this performance. Went to Apollo, prayed, stepped on the stage and....
They wouldn’t have booed them off stage anyway because it wasn’t amateur night. They were musical guests that night. Their music was playing on the radio way before this performance.
LOL this was 9 years before i was born and I'm obsessed with them. Saw them in Melbourne!!! Absolutely amazing!!! Words do not describe. They still got it after all these years. Donnie girl all the way with Jon a close second
How did they get away with lip-singing at the Apollo? Regardless, great choreography. Jordan looks very similar to Michael Jackson leading The Jackson 5.
Bless Jon, he could have kicked Joey a few times over. Joey could and can still dance, in my opinion, he has always been the best dancer and singer, but that is probably because he has always been my favourite and I am biased lol . But he is more than good xx
