At one time NLP was primarily reframing.
If you think of a frame as a metaphor for the imaginary border we use to filter information coming in through our five senses, reframing is the idea that by changing the filter you can alter your reality.
Sounds like heavy stuff, but the truth is we create our reality every moment.
Most of the time we fight to create the same reality moment to moment including creating and clinging to our problems because we're comfort seeking beings. Sameness, familiarity, and things that match and fit tend to make us feel more stable and secure and that includes the problems we complain about.
Ever meet someone who complains about the same trivial problem over and over and it's obvious to everyone it's an easy fix.
I knew a beautiful woman who, every time we talked, complained about how sexually frustrated she was. It was obvious real quick that this was not the real issue. I don't know what the real issue was but sexual frustration was self-imposed and a facade to not deal with something deeper. She could have easily walked into any room and had any guy she wanted.
If you're experiencing a problem try changing the way you're framing the problem. For example, taking a step back by expanding the frame to take a more general view of the situation. Or perhaps you need to narrow the frame to look more closely at a fine detail that could be the cause or the solution.
One of my favorite NLP presuppositions is that there's no failure, only feedback. Perhaps our business isn't going well. Instead of drawing the conclusion that it's a failure, think of the poor results as feedback and change something and the feedback will change.
Sleight of Mouth is a technology created by Robert Dilts from modeling great orators and great leaders throughout history. It is conversational reframing for persuading, influencing, and leading people. It works by reframing objections.
Not only can it be used to reframing other peoples' limiting beliefs, you can use it on yourself to overcome your own limiting beliefs.
Doug O'Brien has been teaching Sleight of Mouth for nearly 30 years now to coaches, salespeople, therapists, doctors, lawyers, and even some politicians in order to close deals, win arguments, and overall win people over. He even wrote a book about it.
Doug is coming to Santa Cruz July 9th and 10th to teach Sleight of Mouth and to drill it into your muscle so you're ready to use it at work the following Monday morning.
