NMR is a widely used spectroscopic method to deduce chemical structure. It has become a central tool for chemistry, medicine, materials science, and engineering. This animated video shows the behavior of nuclei in a magnetic field, magnetic resonance, and explains how the NMR spectrum is used to understand chemical structure. Rather than go into the quantum theory and mathemantics of NMR, the goal of the video is to provide a visual model to help students and life-long learners gain a deeper understanding of NMR. It should be noted that the animation of the continuous spin state transitions is not representative of the actual quantized behavior of the spin states. For viewers interested in further exploration of NMR theory, please refer to textbooks or on-line sources such as:

Worth pointing out: The pulse is not directed along right angles, it is in fact directed axially along B0, but the radio waves are circularily polarized, so the B1 field in the radio wave is actually spinning in the xy plane. It's the B1 field that is at right angles, but constantly spinning at the Larmor frequency (omega0) of the protons. This B1 spinning field forces the nuclei to gain an additional preccesion motion around itself, at a rate of omega1 (omega1 = gamma * B1) and the overall magnetization is then manipulated as we please.

amazing explanation, thank you for the video. would have liked some elaboration on why frequency and shielding relate
@ScienceSketch
@ScienceSketch 3 года назад
Thanks very much, Hedgehog. The relationship between shielding and frequency depends on the Larmor equation. The higher the magnetic field around the nucleus (less shielding), the higher the frequency. More shielded nuclei will experience a lower magnetic field and will have lower frequency. Stay tuned for NMR II coming out soon.
