"No Arahant Can Remain A Lay Person," (A Call to Protect the Sāsana). 

'Shallow waters make a lot of noise.'
This powerful message from the Dhammapada could not be more relevant today, as Bhikkhu Candana addresses an instance of a “loud noise” coming from a small pond of shallow waters, i.e., a lay person claiming to be an Arahant, who remains a layperson.
In this spontaneous talk, Bhante addresses a question by a student/practitioner, in relation to a current sad and disheartening situation within the Sāsana, where a blatant divergence from the Teachings of Lord Buddha is being actively promoted and hailed as “Dhamma,” within none other than certain monastic circles. This, in relation to a layperson who claims to have attained Arahantship who, nonetheless, remains a layperson.
Bhikkhu Candana pointed to the undeniable fact, that in the entirety of the 84,000 Teachings of Lord Buddha, one cannot find a single case of a lay Arahant, who remains a layperson past a week or two after their attainment of this most supreme of states, which Lord Buddha describes as the fulfillment of the Holy Life. While referring to the suttas, Bhante explained how this is utterly impossible, given the powerful impact of Disenchantment and Dispassion on the personality of the individual who attains the state of Arahanship, whereby one’s behavior leaves no trace of conceit or desire, unlike the “loud noise” we are witnessing in the aforementioned case.
In this talk, Bhante also uttered a powerful call for caring listeners and practitioners to become cognizant of the dangers of not investigating one’s teacher, or not cross-referencing what one is seeing with what the Dhamma is in fact telling us; and how to make sense of this confusing and unfortunate incidence.
