Hello! I am from Canal Fulton and I have a long line of ancestors that also lived in the area. There is a building downtown that used to be the Finefrock Furniture Company and was very well known around the Canal Fulton and Massillon areas. There is a lot of history and ghost stories from that building and would make a really awesome video! If you have any questions I could answer let me know! I’ve looked into it quite a bit considering it is my family’s history! Great video, you taught me things that I didn’t know about my own town!

We tend to forget how bad infant mortality was until recent times. I worked in a cemetery, and one day a young man came in very tense. He asked where was Babyland. I asked for a name to look up. He repeated where is Babyland? I asked again for a name. He got a bit aggitated, and demanded just tell me where Babyland is. I had to tell him there were six Babylands in that cemetery. He calmed down then.

Many people don’t know that baby land is a thing. Infant mortality was a huge issue. Thanks for sharing this!

I love the stories you relate; they're all new to a visiting Limey. So it isn't just the Union Pacific and the Settle & Carlisle line that had a Paddy under every crosstie then; sadly most major works of that age had a high mortality rate. There's a slightly different slant to the burial legend in this country too. In Anglican tradition, the dead were laid with their feet pointing east so that on Resurrection morning when the Lord Jesus returns they will stand up and face him. (not watch the sunrise.) After suicides were finally allowed to be buried in consecrated ground (rather than a convenient crossroads or verge) they were laid with their feet to the west, so they would rise with their backs to the Lord. Somehow, I doubt he'd be that bothered myself.

Thank you for this John! I was unaware of the Anglican burial traditions and I’m so grateful to you for sharing the info! History and tradition are so important to me and it’s people such as yourself that help me better understand the past (and present). Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and of course for watching and commenting!

The Irish went through an under spoken about period in the U.S. where they were not necessarily treated well but they did a lot of the in demand and dangerous labor that helped build just about everything in parts of this country, and many of them died for it. It seems to be a kind of inconvenient truth in some ways these days that is better left forgotten by some, not that they seem to want to remember large pieces of history anyway.

I swear the production quality is better on every video you put out. Canal Fulton is one of the best hidden gems in Northeast Ohio, especially if you're into haunted stuff. It's a great place to walk and explore if you're ever bored on a summer day. I've heard many many ghost stories about it over the years. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Warehouse On the Canal, which probably gets mentioned the most in regards to hauntings. Although the last time I was there (several years ago), it seemed pretty empty. Also I hate to be a downer, but I've read that the lock keeper murder story is likely a fabrication. I believe the building was actually built after the canal was closed (I don't know if the signage there states otherwise), but I know it was rather uncommon on smaller canals like the O&E Canal for locks to have lock keepers on duty. Typically the boat crews would operate the locks themselves. However, lock keepers were commonplace on larger waterways with heavier traffic such as the Muskingum River and Ohio River, and you can still see that today. Also, for anyone thinking of heading out that way, I highly recommend The Toys Time Forgot, Oser's Ice Cream, and Deliciously Different Chocolate. I believe Rogue's Hollow is also somewhat close, which has plenty of ghost stories of its own.
@CuriousHistoryYT
@CuriousHistoryYT 2 года назад
You’re so awesome Space Ace! I love your contributions to the channel! Thanks for this. I wish we could have hit the warehouse story. We were just out of time on this day. I believe the lock foreman legend is too far fetched as well. Things just don’t add up but it is very prominent on the ghost circuit. You are never a downer. Keep commenting please! Rogues Hollow is in pre production now. Glad you mentioned it. Thanks again for being such an incredible supporter of the channel!

Dude I saw the thumbnail and thought “Wait a second... I know that place! I left my bike in that shop last week!” I’ve lived there a few years now, and I didn’t know any of this. I walk along the Loch 4 path all the time on weekends and had no clue about the paranormal stories there! And the library is so nice and recently added to I would have never guessed it was a mortuary. I’m gonna think a little differently whenever I walk the bike path now (and see the large fake spiders still tangled up in tree branches above the water I’m guessing were from a Halloween event). I wonder if the tunnel still exist between buildings or if it’s been filled in? The Canal Days festival will be happening in a couple weeks too.

@@CuriousHistoryYT Yeah, you could call it that. It is more just the feeling that I need to look back over my shoulder towards the woods between the canal and the Tusc. So , yea I believe it could be described as someone watching. The feeling usually is not near the lock house though. Typically the urge to look over my shoulder comes right when I get to the part of the canal that Lindsey Concrete backs up to. So about a 1/4 mile from the lock house toward Canal Fulton.

Referring to the placement of bodies in the grave, here in the south, we too have the bodies facing east., to greet the coming Savior on His return. You probably already know, but we also have "decoration" days. Each church or graveyard, memorial garden, etc. has a anniversary, usually when it first opened, or it's "homecoming" so to speak. We decorate the graves, visit with our loved ones long gone, and remaining relatives and friends as well. Back in the day, we would bring food and have "dinner on the ground", usually with some singing and lots and lots of visiting. Also when there was more freedom in cemeteries, the memorial gardens here have strict rules what you can and cannot do to your loved ones grave, we would plant evergreen trees. Cedars, firs, etc etc, representing that eternity is just that, eternal. Great story.
@CuriousHistoryYT
@CuriousHistoryYT Год назад
It sure would be nice if people would visit loved ones in the cemetery and have picnics etc. Although I love the peace and serenity of cemeteries now, I would love to see the grounds used for more than just the very occasional visit.

The only thing that may have been around at that time cold have been Hydrochloric Acid, or something similiar. I had to stop the video to read the cemetery sign, and that was most intersting about how the burials were.
