It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time we examine a very rare 1997 Daewoo Nexia 1.5 GLXi five door, and I start getting far too nostalgic and excited for very little reason. Be prepared for scintillating performance from a Twin Cam 16V Family I engine, slogan quotations, unique marketing, a selection of cassettes, very low mileage, quite a nasty gearlever gaiter, much too much enthusiasm about a facelifted version of a South Korean made Vauxhall Astra Mark II and generally little of any consequence at all... Nothing untoward, then!
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

This has been a treat much to other people's bewilderment I've always coverted 90s and early 2000s daewoos, interestingly the espero is built on the mk2 cavalier platform, its a shame the name daewoo went the way it did I currently have a 2010 registered matiz that was constructed in Korea by daewoo

I do love a bit of Daewoo action! I don't even know why either... Yes, we do have an Espero lined up for some point next year. If your Chevrolet Matiz is on a 2010 registration, then it will be one of the last ones made! I am really looking forward to getting more older obscure South Korean and Malaysian cars on the channel.

Astra fantastic I remember the Daewoo very well in the 90s I was allways a little fascinated by these cars as they where sort of old vauxhall design cars but regrettably I never owned one I had the Cavaliers very nice cars but I wish I'd had a good daewoo run of cars now thanks for the video enjoyed it.

Yes, they fascinated me at the time too, and it looks as I am not the only one to feel that way. General Motors certainly got their money out of this design, didn't they? Would love to cover a Cavalier at some point...

I knew I would love this car. At the time it was new I had a 1995 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Merit. It had power steering and 60 lethargic horses and nothing else. New price in 1995 was £10,500. The Astra was well built, comfortable and gave no trouble but the handling on the limit was terrible. However, the worst complaint was the non adjustable steering which became painful in the neck and shoulders after a few hours. You have shown me that for similar money I could have had a 3 year warranty, much more power, better seats, adjustable steering, electric windows and possibly A/C. I admit that I went with the well known Make that guaranteed my wife reliability for a 440 mile weekly commute and power steering and rear doors that our Peugeot 205 1.1 Junior didn't have. To my shame I never considered the Daewoo Nexia 1.5. Thanks Joseph, I loved this.

An extremely interesting vehicle! And your information about Daewoo and the nameplates is was sold under globally is spot on! When Daewoo came to the US, it only sold the Nubira, Lanos and Leganza before it went bankrupt. Inexpensive and disposable, which makes a Daewoo very very rare. Excellent video!

Yes, I saw a Lanos on a show called "Tim and Eric: Awesome Show, Great Job" from Adult Swim about ten years ago. I know they aren't exactly common over there. The history of this model around the world is very confusing and I only touched upon it, but it does give the platform an incredibly long lifespan of around 32 years from the first Mk II Vauxhall Astra to the last Daewoo Nexia/Cielo sold in Uzbekistan.

Hi. I just saw this video in my 'suggested feed', and as I used to own a Nexia back in 2002 (where have those 22 years gone!, lol) I just had to watch. I remember my old Nexua with fondness, it was a great car. I bought my 'P Reg' 3 door 1.5GLXi 16v from a BCA auction for £1250 including fees in 2002. It had just one owner and only done around 30K miles (in 6 years). Interestingly it also had a tow bar fitted like the one in your video. Maybe it was thing back then. I used it for a daily 1 hour commute each way of around 45 miles, 60% of which was motorway, the rest city, and it was suberb. Smooth, comfortable, very economical, and reliable too. Suprisingly quick for just a 90BHP engine too. A friend at the time who ran an astra GTE and a bit of a Vauxhall geek was facinated by the engine, as it appeared to be a 'de tuned' GM / Izuzu block with some "Red Top" components, whatever that meant. Anyway, after I had owned it for a while my friend bought it from me, in excellent condition, for £500 in around 2004. He wanted to tinker with it and ended up tuning the engine using Vauxhall parts and he claimedo he got it to 130BHP, calling it his "stealth daily driver". They were a seriously underrated car at the time. Ironically there is a massive demand for simple to work on reliable and corrosion resistant cars these days, and I would imagine that if there were more on the road and known about they would be a sought after budget buy for simple motoring. Great video, enjoyed the trip down memory lane. All the best.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 месяца назад
The engine is a 1.5 Family I General Motors engine with a unique capacity to Daewoo, so related to the 1.3 and 1.4 engines in the original Mark II Astra. The cylinder head is unique to Daewoo, and the 2.0 Red Top is the larger Family II engine, so not quite as similar as the original Mark II Astra, but related. A popular engine swap was the Red Top into a Nexia back in the day, actually, but the Family Is and Family IIs did have a lot of shared components, so I am not surprised you could upgrade the standard Twin Cam 1.5 with some Red Top bits. I drove an automatic one the same colour a couple of months after making this video, which was filmed in the autumn of 2020. The two cars were owned by two friends, I think the automatic one was in slightly better condition but I can't remember now. I am about to release a video on a Lanos later this week and then have an Espero coming up at some point, so these cars do hold something of a fascination for some reason....

@@lloydvehicleconsulting it’s a shame Daewoo folded so soon but with all the corporate corruption it’s understandable. A lot of people are quick to say they were rubbish, horrible to drive cars etc, but they were the Dacia of the 90’s good honest cars. A lot of them were sent to the scrappy when the government ran the scrapage scheme, and then it was mostly down to other manufacturers offering such low resale and part ex values; as for the first few years they didn’t like the new way Daewoo sold cars. It put most mainstream manufacturers to shame so to combat it they just priced down the cars at resale so once the three years warranty was up they became worthless.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
@@whimpychicken3104 , yes, they did go under and the car division was rescued by General Motors, then subsequently renamed Chevrolet in Europe. Many other dealers did not like Daewoos because of the different approach they had, as you say, and so did not want to take them at all. The steering was a bit woolly, and some of the switchgear felt a bit cheap, but when you compare it to a Lada or Proton 1.3 or 1.5, it feels significantly better. I quite enjoyed it, especially as these are still quite cheap, and I have a feeling that Danny does too.
