It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a 2000 Rover 45 1.4 iE, which has covered just 22,000 miles from new. Be prepared for a surprisingly short test drive, an unusually conventional boot release, a very tight R65 Peugeot derived gearbox, an excellent hydraulic clutch, some peeling door cards, more Rover nostalgia, comparisons with my 2003 45 2.0 V6 Connoisseur, rather low specification, a very comfortable centre console and generally little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...
Tweed Jacket Reviews: 2003 Rover 45 2.0 V6 Connoisseur: • Tweed Jacket Reviews: ...

Oh, Mr Lloyd. There is something about a pov spec car which makes me happy, in the same way, a fully loaded one does. Nice one.
@mattsbeamer

One thing I am jealous of on this car, which my BMW doesn't have. A lockable glove box!!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, this is literally as basic as a 45 gets! I still enjoyed driving it, though.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Can you not lock the glovebox on your car, sir?

What a wonderful survivor. Funny how there is so much love for the lower spec cars! Those seats certainly look like comfy armchairs.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, I much prefer my 45 V6 Connoisseur, but there is something fascinating about this perfectly preserved base model too.
@alansimpson835

What a little minter. I agree There is something wonderful about a basic spec car where you can just focus on the wonders of driving without pesky distractions. It's also interesting to see what features are prioritised on a base spec car too. Not many other base specs would have steering wheel stereo controls and a rev counter. Great review of a lovely wee car
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, it is an interesting choice of equipment with the steering wheel controls and no electric windows or mirrors! That's right, the base level Fiestas at this time were absolute poverty spec, weren't they? I love my 45 V6s luxuries, though, so I think I will stick with that. Very, very nice condition, though.
@alansimpson835
@alansimpson835 3 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting it takes me back to the days of reading car brochures in the 90s when intermittent wipers, trip computer, rear wash wipe, radio cassette and full wheel covers were all the sorts of things that separated the next model up from the base. When I used to sell Skodas in 2005-7 the base model Fabia came with air con and the computer that told you fuel tank range, mpg, average speed, temperature etc but not with electric windows or even central locking. The smallest engined one only came with a radio cassette rather than CD player then too. Very strange
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Ah yes, if you want to see some severe trim level dependent cost-cutting, the next episode of Tweed Jacket Reviews will show this at its finest from the masters of making you want to move up a grade (Ford). I couldn't have explained this better myself. Yes, the base model Skodas and Seats of five to fifteen years ago looked pretty miserable with plastic wheel trims, manual windows and no colour keyed door handles, even the lowest trim levels look a lot better now.
@revivedfears
@revivedfears 3 года назад
Lovely condition. If only it had electric front windows and the low level spec wouldn't be too noticeable.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
That's right! They could have probably skimped on a couple of features and thrown the electric windows in, and no one would have noticed.

Great to see a base model Joseph. Rover were always very good at making even the lead in model look very attractive even though there was little in the way of equipment. In hindsight I am sure project drive made little or no difference in helping to save the company.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, it's an amazing survivor. Why Rover ordered this as a fleet car for themselves I am not quite sure, but the previous owner clearly really cared for it. It's not at all my cup of tea, as I have literally the opposite type of 45 to this, but nevertheless it does have a couple of things my V6 lacks. Project Drive didn't save the company, sadly....
@seancooke4127
@seancooke4127 3 года назад
Old Rover content is always interesting. This 45 looks amazing. She puts me in mind of a mate of mine who worked hard and saved up to buy a new car that he really wanted for his retirement. He ordered a lovely Metallic Red 2004 Rover 45 from the local dealer. He had hardly run in his pride and joy when MG Rover announced that the Manufacturer would be closed and sold. What a lousy kick to the KPs by the home car manufacturer that he had supported with his hard earned cash. A transaction that he had hoped would ensure the job security of skilled blue collar workers like himself.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, I had a 2004 45 1.4 Club SE. I really liked the way that it looked. It had lost value like a stone when I bought it in 2009, though, only worth £2400 after five and a half years! This 2000 example is in very nice condition indeed, absolutely lovely.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I thought that I would watch the 2 videos on the 45 V6 right after this Gorgeous base model. Yes it made both of them look twice as luxurious, cosy and shiny as they had before. The chrome grille bars look really class on the dark V6. Can't wait for the Escort tomorrow.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@seancooke4127 , the Escort is waiting for you right now if you wish to see it. The base model 45 looks quite agreeable, but the V6 ones are in quite a different league...

Very nice example! 😍 I have an odd liking for poverty spec cars, they are perhaps the better option when buying older cars. This one looks fairly well appointed - nicer seat trim than my top of the range Nissan Almera N16 (diesel - sorry!).
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Oh, don't talk about diesels, someone may be listening! The mileage on this one was amazing, as was the condition, and those seats, as you say... I have heard of an even nicer 1.4 iE, but this will do!
@ash7990
@ash7990 3 года назад
early seats are probably more comfortable and better quality than the later ones, but I don't think the later seats are bad. In fact ive put a set of later leather seats in my early 45. The later seats free up a tiny amount of rear leg room over the huge early style seats. Engine sounds a bit cattery, is it?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, the later seats in our 45 V6 are absolutely fine, if not quite as impressive as these. Engine is probably fine, it's just a bit cold as we filmed the departing and arriving shots first.

Thank you for watching all the way from Portugal! We have many, many MG Rover era reviews on the channel now, multiple 45s and 75s, a 25, and then the ZR, ZS and ZTs too... My own 45 is a V6, so a very different proposition indeed from the K-Series, although I have had three cars myself with the 1.4 K-Series too.
@willswheels283
@willswheels283 3 года назад
There’s always something really nice about a white/beige white Rover 45, or 25/75 for that matter. Most 25’s and 45’s I’ve come across are the 1.4’s, the hardest to find are the Diesels and 1.6 petrols. People bang on about Rover Head Gasket issues and steer clear, but then same people will go out and buy a Renault/Peugeot or Citroen, Electrical gremlins galore!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
The head gasket issues can be relatively easy to solve, sometimes they don't appear at all. This is a different colour from many 45s, I don't think I have seen another like this. I don't know which apart from the V6 45s are the rarest. I have seen plenty of 1.6s and 1.8s around, maybe the diesels are quite rare?
@willswheels283
@willswheels283 3 года назад
Lloyd Vehicle Consulting I’ve seen one 220 SLD for sale for £995 recently, but not many about on the roads. I think a lot of people like the 1.4 because of the economy I’d imagine, and the 104bhp out of the engine is pretty good considering my 1.6 is not far away at 110bhp.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@willswheels283 , yes, the 1.4 and 1.6 have quite similar power outputs. I don't think that the economy and emissions figures are very different either. The diesels do seem to be quite rare for some reason.
@willswheels283
@willswheels283 3 года назад
Lloyd Vehicle Consulting it’s possible most owners of the Diesels were Fleet buyers, they then did a high mileage and eventually scrapped, but other than that I can’t understand why I see so few of the Diesel versions around. Like I mentioned, I see more of the 1.4’s about and for sale than anything else. Come to think of it I haven’t seen a V6 45 either for sale or about on the roads.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@willswheels283 , they sold just 700 45 V6s, and at the moment, only around 100 are on the road, so they are not common at all. There are a couple of sale at the moment, but they don't come on the market that often. I think the 1.4 version of the R3 was the most common for certain.

@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, the whole Project Drive thing was a bit pointless, as they undermined it by going racing and producing the CityRover, both of which lost the company a lot of credibility (and sales)!
@Roverjoe
@Roverjoe 3 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting sadly the phoenix four did a lot of bad choices that ruined the rover brand, if they sold the cityrover much cheaper then they could've gained something from it, another thing before rover got sold to the phoenix four is the HHR should have been split like the R8 the Saloon being the 400 and the Hatch being the 200 and the new R3 model should have taken the metro or 100 name to compete in the smaller class.
