It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a really rather rare 2003 Fiat Stilo Multi Wagon 1.9 JTD Dynamic, which is definitely a car that you don't see any more. Hold onto your seats as we deal with huge numbers of warning lights, an oddly soft textured dashboard, decomposing infotainment system buttons, a broken sat nav, bits of trim falling off, a confusing badge on the side, rather a large boot, a surprisingly pleasant driving experience and a very large panoramic sunroof. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

Thanks Joe, for reviewing my car. I must admit, when you asked to review it, I was wondering why you wanted to. It was just an old banger to me. I had no idea they were so rare. Thanks everyone for commenting. I was very surprised when I checked out the video again, to see so many comments. I didn't choose this car. In fact, it wouldn't have even made a top 100 list. I have lived and worked abroad for several years, but, due to a job change from Kazakhstan to China not going quite as planned thanks to COVID-19, I had to hurriedly and unexpectedly return to the UK for an undetermined amount of time until I could get to China. As I no longer have a UK address, I realised I had to buy a car, register it in my eldest son's name and put me as a named driver. As I knew my son's girlfriend wanted to learn to drive, but couldn't afford it, I decided to choose based on their need and my need combined. A car that was economical yet large enough to fit my son's family, including 2 kids and a 35kg dog! It also needed to carry all our luggage (6 large suitcases and 3 carry ons)! Estate, MPV or 4x4. With a learner driver, albeit in her late 20's, MPV's and 4x4's were priced out on insurance. So estate car it was. She really liked the Fiat out of all the cars that were on eBay and Autotrader, as it looks very modern and certainly, thanks to angularity returning as the style of the moment, belies its age. So, £995 from a dealer on eBay with excellent feedback and a full service history, over half of which was Fiat main dealer. What could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot actually! Buying without viewing is never a good thing, but I was 4,500 miles away and the dealer was offering a COVID-19 special. Free delivery within 250 miles. I was not told of the airbag light or the glow plug light (The alarm malfunction light is a new addition to the dashboard Christmas tree)! Neither was I told about the integrated Sat Nav and radio not working, or the various other bits not working, like the passenger seat electrics! When it was delivered to my son, the dealer phoned to say the delivery driver had pointed out a knocking noise. The dealer wasn't aware and feigned frustration at the delivery driver for not informing him. He assured me that I could investigate and he would either pay for it to be sorted or swap it for another car. When I told him the rear suspension bushes were virtually non-existent, he predictably went very silent. So, another £500 later it had new rear suspension bushes and brand new front discs, callipers and brakes, as they had partially seized. Needless to say, with so much invested in it now, it is here to stay. I am slowly sorting out all the issues. It sits on cruise control at motorway speeds very well, and returns almost 60mpg at best. How many modern cars can claim that?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
It's funny, as my Seat Toledo used to get around 60 mpg on the motorway, had an even bigger boot than the Stilo, and also had plenty of room for four people. They are another criminally overlooked car, but of course they finished production in 2018, so you can't buy them for £995 yet. I did get rather excited when I was offered the chance to review it, and the ridiculous journey to get to Lancashire did end up being worth it, as everyone seems to love the review! Your Stilo Multi Wagon is becoming mildly famous in its own little way... We do like covering slightly obscure cars on No Budget Reviews, and this definitely falls into that second category, the fascinating story and the little quirks it has only make it more interesting. Thanks ever so much indeed again!

Just seen this video. I purchased one of these brand new in 2004. It was the JTD dynamic version with black and off white leather seats. It was a very good car and I had 10 years of trouble free motoring. The JTD engine was amazing and fast for its size. It was far better than a Golf.

An old neighbour bought an ex-demo diesel Stilo hatchback back in the day. Electrical faults were a huge feature of that car and would baffle whichever AA patrolman had drawn the short straw. In comparison, I had a Multipla at the time, which apart from a single immobiliser fault that was easily sorted, was utterly reliable.

I like the picnic table! And that panoramic roof, mmm. I like all the analogue dials and switches in this.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Well, clearly Fiat and Alfa Romeos of the time must have all had similar keys. I do remember the Fiat badge changing colour, always wondered why. The Stilo actually drove OK, despite the obvious faults and slightly appalling interior build quality. The panoramic roof was a much less common option on a car at the time than it is today, so it was really interesting to see that, actually.
@FuelPower
@FuelPower 3 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting It's a basic design that works. the 500 key although looking different uses the same electronics inside. Crikey, I haven't seen one of these for years!! Great review, a trip down memory lane. I remember the promotion of this as an Italian Golf, it was a clean and sensible design and very practical. I thought that was the problem, if you want sensibleness, clean inoffensive design and a car designed to tick all the boxes without setting emotions running just buy a Golf. Italian companies are loved because the design flair and passion means people accept compromised practicality.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Ah yes, very practical indeed, sir! Until the bits started falling off... That is it, people didn't really want an Italian copy of a Golf which would lose much more money and would disintegrate after a couple of years, they just wanted a Golf. The recent Alfa Romeos major on style, not functional build quality, don't they?
@johnbradshaw5900
@johnbradshaw5900 3 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting indeed, I have a colleague with a Guilia, he admits that there are issues with it but doesn't care because whenever he looks at it and drives it he just feels happy. I had a friend with a GTA coupe a few years ago. Again he admitted the build quality left something to be desired and it wasn't that great to drive but he didn't mind as it was such a beautiful car. My wife had a Golf 7, it was a very sensible car that did everything well and was a car you buy based on a hard headed evaluation. However while we respected it neither of us loved it or felt any sadness when we sold it. Funnily enough, despite what you might think from reputation and image the build quality wasn't that great, it suffered a few gremlins and after a couple of years there were squeaks and rattles in the cabin.

@@johnbradshaw5900 , one of the first ever Tweed Jacket Reviews was a brand new Golf Mark 7.5. I don't know if you have seen that one, but that was the first time we ever did anything remotely approaching cutting edge new car reviews (not really)! It had only done around 700 miles. It is a good car, but it just left me a bit cold, because I know that you can buy a Leon or Octavia with more space and equipment for less money, nice though it was. Volkswagen reliability only seems to be average these days, although Seat and Skoda are better, bizarrely. Yes, we are Alfa Romeo fans on this channel, and I may get another go in one soon. They make little sense on a rational level, but often Rovers are like that, and I don't hate those (with one exception), so we do welcome such eccentricities...
@johnbradshaw5900
@johnbradshaw5900 3 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting just watched the Golf review, an excellent review which was very fair. Yes it's a good car but some reviews go over the top and over rate it. I actually think Skoda are more VW than VW are now. The interior quality of the latest generation of Skoda's is ahead of VW sister models and the Skoda's are invariably more practical and seem designed around what their buyers want rather than pretending to be sports cars The curse of modern cars and much motor journalism is the obsession with sportiness. If I buy a hot hatch or coupe I want sharp handling and sportiness, but if I buy a cooking model Octavia or a Superb it is about comfort and practicality. I applaud Skoda for recognizing that.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@johnbradshaw5900 , yes, I prefer Seats and Skodas to Volkswagens. The Skodas tend to have a bit of a softer ride, more space, slightly less complicated infotainment systems and are better value for money, which also often equates to better reliability. I agree, not everyone wants incredibly firm suspension with different artificial steering settings when going about normal duties and doing motorway miles.

Hi, very nice video! That car was a huge flop of Fiat in Europe despite cost of development (some bilions was wasted in) here in Brazil had a good sales compared to Astra H, Focus Mk1 and Golf Mk4 and because of that the hatchback version (we had only the 5 doors version) was sold until October of 2010 when Bravo was announced to 2011. I think that Fiat put many unfinished technology (with a huge price, of course) in this cars with many electronics trobles (see the airbag failure in BC), the low quality of them and the design of car that sounds unattractive for many people was the cause of flop. I've a Stilo 2004 5 doors with a 1.8L Opel engine 103 hp in Brazil and I had no problems with electronics - because it is a entry model, and in general, here the most part of problems is the suspension bushings and the sun-roof that is difficult have who repare them and parts for Abarth model (with 2.4 5-cil engine) because here was produced only 940 units from 2002-2010. The Stilo platform was used in second Bravo and amost used by Rover, but that didn't see the daylight.

How wonderful to have a viewer from Brazil! You are very welcome. Yes, much more popular in Brazil for some reason, and lasted a lot longer on the market. I actually have two reviews of the Astra H on this channel, would you believe! My father-in-law still has one, and we had a TwinTop for a while. Yes, lots and lots of radical technology which does not work any more, the airbag light is infamous for coming on in these. They swapped out the 1.6 Fiat engine for a 1.6 Family I GM engine in Brazil, didn't they? The 2.4 was a pretty interesting engine....

@@lloydvehicleconsulting thanks for answer me! I subscribed into your channel! I like Astra H, it was the most sold hatchback in C segment on 2000s in Brazil and was produced up to 2012 (without any updates)! The Stilo engine in base level is 1.8 8v engine (originaly with 103 hp), up to 2007 had a model with a variant of that engine with 16v and 122 hp - they used the old Corsa B engine with base, despite that, the Fiat 1.6 16v here was used in Palio, Siena, Strada Mk1; Brava, Doblo and Marea, after GM-Fiat joint venture they was used again with 1.9L configuration in Linea but was by a shorter time, because in early 2010 the "new" eTorq replaced both engines - eTorq is the old Tritec engine from Chrysler/Mini engine that was updated with two variants (1.6 16v and 1.8 16v) and was in use even today in Argo/Cronos/Toro family and some models of Jeep Renegade, but maybe in 2001 will be replaced with GSE Turbo 1.0L and 1.3L (here the name of them is Firefly) that today is used in Europe and was developed in Brazil.

@@ricardoalvim , thank you ever so much indeed for subscribing. Yes, we have had the Tipo over here, and that was fitted with the eTorq engine for a while. I drove a 2001 Mini on the channel for No Budget Reviews recently with the Tritec engine, which was OK, but is not that advanced by modern standards. Yes, you are right, the Jeep Renegade and 500X had that engine too! Funny how a GM engine made its way into a Fiat, but I know the 1.3 turbo diesel was in Vauxhall Corsas and Fiat Puntos (which shared a platform) until around 2018. The Astra H is something of a secondhand bargain over here, they are easily available for under £500. My father-in-law has had his 2010 1.4 Astra H for almost ten years now. Yes, the Firefly engine took a while to come out, but they are finally trying to put it into Fiat's new range now!

Nothing worse than sticky switches! Shame that screen didn't work, does that mean there was no radio aswell. The larger fiats always seem to struggle in the UK, although they do have the Tipo for now. Noticed the 4 door has already been dropped.

Oh sir, those switches were nasty... Phil has taken the infotainment system completely out and changed it for a normal radio, which actually works! You are right, the Tipo Saloon has been discontinued after less than a year on sale. Must be one of the shortest lived models ever. The Tipo hatchback and estate will probably be removed from sale or replaced quite soon too, I imagine.

@@WilliamStevens007 , it was all a bit much to remember during a very long day, I am afraid! I drove over 200 miles just to drive this car, and then another 110 to do the Jazz.

Not too shabby given the age, I thought the previous Bravo, Brava was a better design though, this less adventurous styling. Had a Fiat Marea 1.8 ELX , nice engine, but once the newness had worn off the rattles began, failed first MOT with a faulty catalytic converter and lost a ton of money on it. Never again will I buy Fiat, build quality is their downfall.

Yes, I gather Mareas are now very rare too, especially with such horror stories behind them. Can't believe you failed the first MOT due to a faulty catalytic converter! You are right, much less of a slick design, very conventional.
