This bed layout can be so versatile. You can use the 3rd row bench seats to hold up your bed and pick whatever side you want your bed on. Then on the other end of the bed can be held up by totes/bins/buckets ect. That will give you plenty of under bed storage for your clothes and food. I'm doing the same layout with a '24 Odyssey only I built a wooden frame rather than using a folding cot. I was afraid the cot would damage the leather seats plus the floor is so uneven so the cot was a bit wobbly and tilted at an angle. The wooden frame accommodates the changes in floor height so the bed is level. Now I need to find a comfy memory foam mattress to fit the small length. Then it's time to give it a try and see how I like it.

That’s sounds awesome 😎 🛌 🚐 do you have any videos of your setup? I recommend a Japanese floor futon cot size or a trifold mattress narrow twin or cot size. Both are very comfy…But I also add a bit more foam because I live a super soft bed and it’s hard to find a regular mattress that narrow. lol

Looks like an awesome setup. My friend lives in a dodge grand caravan. He’s 5 11 and sleeps on the third row seat. He puts his head on a pillow on the arm rest and sleeps in a fetus position. He uses the third row seat as a sofa. He is very happy and gets a great nights sleep.

Hi Dia! That’s the best use of space I’ve seen in a minivan! And I’ve seen a lot, I’ve been looking for one but wasn’t sure it would be comfortable. I have a travel trailer and I’m looking for 2 acres as home base and leave it there while traveling in a minivan. I’m not living full time in it now. Great job!👏

Thanks Sue! The cot is very comfortable I think because it has springs which I really like. I do add more layers just because I like a real soft bed. They have a couple different sizes, it’s affordable, packable, lightweight.

If you don't mind compromising the cot, you could dismantle the end support bar that's sitting on your back seat, set cot directly on it so that it lays flatter. And that back area is a perfect place for a kitchen. I re-purposed a metal toolbox with a door wide enough to open and do all my cooking in. In a vehicle, cooking with flame on metal surfaces is best. I see all these other van builds with wooden drawers that pull all the way out. I think, First is that safe? Second, with all kinds of weather out there, how do they keep the flame lit? 🤔 Wind is always the culprit to any outdoor meal preparation😉.

I love this setup ! I’ve been using almost the exact layout in my 2009 Odyssey for a few years now. I made a wood platform for the bed with a 4” tri-fold memory foam mattress, it’s extremely comfortable. This setup allows you to keep the third row in the van for the occasional passenger if needed. I love that I can sit and read or prepare food and get dressed with all the extra room. My only difference is I have my fridge where you have your shelf, & most of my cooking supplies are in the back. I also have room in the back for folding chairs and firewood. I think its the best use of space by far !

Your bed idea is brilliant! Do you have a storage unit to keep the bulk of your property? I’m currently saving $ for a van to convert for FT van dwelling. But, your video has inspired me~ maybe I can start out with a minivan. Great job & the best of luck to you!

Thank you! 😊 At the moment I’m just part time… but in the near future I may go full time for a while ( I don’t like staying in one spot for too long lol) then I will consider getting a small storage unit for my bulk things. A mini van is a great start. I’ve enjoyed it the only thing is I can stand up.

i put a piece of unsanded 3 flat plywood in between two sleeping bags with wool blankets on top, This set up I placed from the driver side back seat into the trunk of my sedan. i've been sleeping on my floor for several months before so i knew i'd transition better than most. I enjoy it because i wake up much easier and I wake up with a natural 6-8 hour massage from gravity against a firm surface. It's actually healthier to sleep on firm surfaces for longevity, that's why i started sleeping on my floor. P.s. my goal is to someday get a minivan :) thanks for the vid!!!

I have thought about this set up but don't have my van yet 😢. I also want to put my fridge in the back but mine is larger than yours. It is 38x21x19. Do you think it would fit behind the 3rd row seat? I'm sure nothing else would fit back there with it but was hoping to put my fridge in the back. I really love all the space you have. Your fridge might take most of the back area. The narrowest width of this van and many other vans is 48 inches. So it should fit behind the 3rd row seats. 👍

I just got a 2024 equinox. Much more room then my 2014. I don't live in it. But I do camp in it. I have a thick roll up mattress that is so comfortable. I got one for my dog too. I set up battery lights. Made a tiny kitchen with a pump and sink. A camp cooker. Clothes and I hit the road. I wanted the Traverse but I would have had to wait 2mths. My prior car wasn't working.

After three van no builds, and needing to have some passenger sitting available for occasional family trips with doors exit available, I ended up with something similar to this one that seems to make more sense to me. As a solo traveler anything will do me good, but life changes has make me reconsidering the design and make room for the occasional family member ride. I removed the second row already for some time, but left the third row just in case but folded down in my sienna. Well, recently I redo my set up to use the straight row up and as my bed. I use a couple of plastic drawers against the sliding drivers side door (living a foot and a half of door clearance) as storage and placed some under the sits storage also. Everything else goes into the now available ample trunk. I made a little adjustment to allow myself to sleep on my back (most of the time I sleep on my left, fetal position) since I did not fit completely on the sits. Surprise, I now have a whole area in the middle as free and stretching space. I think I am going to like it, but only time and trial will tell. Without the overlapping bed this is very similar to mine.

I do like the back of the 3rd row seats huge storage. I keep playing around with different layouts. I like having very little in the van but this is a luxury since I’m only part time. I think if I was full time again I’d have a lot more inside.

I've been wanting to do a similar situation with the bed behind the passenger side. I'm looking at getting one of those 'chair beds' which are about 24" wide. (I'm just 5' and not too big)...Would you happen to know how wide that smaller 3rd row seat is? I totally love this set up as there's just a lot more room! (I'll have 2 small dogs with me as well, so that 60% seat will work perfect as their bed at night!

In not sure how wide each part of the 3rd row bench seat are. I would have to measure and see. Hmmm 🤔 That cot is about 24-25inches wide. If that gives you an idea.

Maybe an ottoman in addition to the small side of the seat would make it a bit longer for your fur babies and give them room and you can put the chair/bed on the wider side. Just a thought.

Eureka! I've found the solution!!!! I'm 5'8" and disabled. It's ALL about the bed for me. I also wanted to enter from the driver's side but didn't want to lose that seat! And, I didn't want to lose that precious storage. I found a great narrow twin steel bed frame with bamboo slats for support. It's sturdy and only 30 lbs. I was able to assemble by myself. It's 30×72×14. I have 2 full size suitcases underneath! Plus a few other bins and buckets. Lots of storage. Hump and all, it's level. I found a kids gaming chair that fits perfect in that 3rd row spot. It even looks a bit like the original seat. Lol It's tight back there. This chair is 16"wide. 22" deep. 30ish tall. I have about an inch gap where I can store my laptop. Plus, it's only 13?lbs. I can move it for easy access to my garage. I hope this helps. It made a Huge difference in my comfort and security. ✌️❤️ ~ 🦋

I tried this setup in a dodge caravan. Even with the passenger seat pulled all the way forward it didn’t fit. I had to drop the 60 split to make it fit. Your van is longer. Good video

Ah, brilliant. I wanted to enter on the drivers side too and never came up with this solution. If I were you, for comfort sake, if you are keeping this set up, get the folks at home depot to cut you a bed sized piece of plywood, screw some 2/4 legs on and find a piece of foam.

I do like the simplicity of your build because it’s pretty, clutter free and gives you lots of space. The arrangement with the bed seems a bit uncomfortable though, and not being able to enter the back from the driver’s seat, would defeat the purpose of living or traveling in a van for me. Thanks. The bed is just just to show you can put a bed resting on the bench to help support. Just as an idea. The bed and the shelf are low enough to pass through to the front . As long as your physically able to climb over, just like having to climb over the console. 👍

I have a 600watt and 2000watt BLUETTI. I have the bougerv 23 qt fridge/freezer. I have yet to try that experiment to find out for sure how long I can go with the battery.

I'm back looking at this set up again! I just watched a video of someone putting a small futon (with the back removed) from Ikea across the width just behind the front seats! She gave no measurements, but she could stretch out and she was 5' 2". Do you happen to know the width of the van from sliding door to sliding door just behind the front seats? I haven't purchased my van yet and that information is rather hard to come by! There was a lot of room in the van when she put the bed that way!

That bed looks VERY uncomfortable. Those cots sag and the sides very uncomfortably rigid. And you have the feet quite a bit higher than the head, so blood would rush to your head. Nope. Doesn't look good. Sorry.

@@KattEyl I think it is an experiment in van interior design. Not necessarily actually used. It is always elusive to find that extra floor space. Good on her with coming up with various ideas.
