NO CAMERA HAS EVER ADDRESSED THIS ONE ISSUE. The best camera review never made.

Whether you shoot with a Sony Venice or a Sony a6700. A Canon C400 or a Canon M50. A Panasonic GH7, a GH5 or an S1h. An S5iix. A Nikon Z6 or an iphone. There's this one issue that needs to be addressed by everyone interested in owning the best camera. The one that can do everything. From a feature film to a documentary, weddings to corporate work, commercials for Nike or the top social media accounts, no matter what you want to do with your camera, we all want to tell a story. And as much as you think you want to do that, do you really? Do you even know what that entails? What it takes to sit down and plan that out? The commitment it takes to complete something like that? Do you have any idea what all of that is all abourt? I'll tell you this, one you get there, it's a great gift. A privilege to be inside of a process like that. And you know what? The crazy thing is... once you commit to a story that means something to you, the camera you use won't be your priority anymore. Any camera that shoots decent footage will do, and only then will you be on the right track. Only then will you be in possession of the perfect camera. At least in my humble opinion.

Great commentary as usual. And yes, focus on story. There are so many stories to tell. From what is going on in our world, our country, to what is going on in our lives. Personally. No one is stopping you from telling a story. Your story. Especially on RU-vid. Regardless of how many subscribers you have, you can still tell any story you want. Yet, telling a story requires a lot of work. Planning, Plotting. Writing. Rewriting. And when you've written a story. Filmed the story and edited it. It feels good knowing you've completed the telling of your story. No matter how many people see it. You've done it. Congratulations. You can be proud of the work because you finished it. Uploaded it. Posted it, here and there. Shared it with others. Thanks again for your commentary. You always inspire.

Amen to all of this, and thank you so much for the kind words, I never take them for granted. I think one of the most important things that we can learn as an artist is to finish what we started. Come up with an idea, but then actually go through the process and complete it. Because through that journey what you intended will change so much, and if you allow yourself to follow those forks in the road, you’ll learn so much about yourself and the subject that you’re exploring. The story that you’re telling. I feel like it teaches so much empathy, it teaches us to pay attention, it teaches us to stay open. Thanks again, I always appreciate the comments, they mean so much to me.

@@RockWILK I love how you said, "through that journey what you intended will change so much..." That's my experience as well. As I flesh out the story, and then transform it into a screenplay, it changes even more. Because you start to see the deeper sides of the story. The creation process itself is so rewarding.

I've found that it boils down to ONE thing. Our consumerism / obsession with buying things. It's not just camera gear, though it's relevant here. I am a hobby wanderer with dozens of hobbies that rotate back around to me over time, though I make my living with photography and woodworking (mostly woodworking). This obsession we have with buying things infects every aspect of our lives, from cars to TV's. And it's been exploited by every company that makes things. Until society addresses it's obsession with consumerism, content that focuses on "gear reviews" will ALWAYS be more watched and therefore popular amongst RU-vidrs. I will never follow channels who exclusively make gear videos. I don't want to give these big companies the satisfaction of my stealing my most valuable possession, which is obviously my time.

I still remember Zack Arias many many years ago going through the "perfect starting setup for a professional photographer" and it used to be a Canon 5D mk1 (!) with a 35/2.0 and 85/1.8. That's it. Everything you need to cover 95% of your commercial jobs. I'd say nowadays it's probably the Canon 5D mkII or mkIII, maybe the Canon 6D. That's where "revolutions" in camera gear stopped. From then on it's just slow evolution and tiny progress which isn't actually WORTH all the additional cost. In some cases there's actually a de-evolution, like in tonality, dynamic range and colour science like you had in old low megapixel CCD sensors, both full frame and especially medium format. The important thing is to get experience, know your gear, know its limits, know your own limits, push the boundaries of your creativity to set yourself apart, not look for your software and equipment to do that for you. Kids nowadays can't see the value of putting in the work and learning something in-and-out.
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 8 дней назад
I totally agree. Experience.. actually going out and doing it is what is most important by far. Focus on your own creativity, that's why watching too many videos about specs can really stop your brain from being creative. You begin to only look at the ability of the tool to reproduce what you are creating, but you are creating nothing because you're never even really thinking about a story. Of creating anything yourself. People think that camera is going to help come up with ideas. Aid your imagination. Not gonna happen. ;) . Making my first feature length film on my phone taught me so much. Yes to "putting in the work", because if you don't do that, how do you know if you even like to make art??? Get what you can afford and get to telling a story. Thanks for all the good energy, much appreciated.

@RockWILK - Thanks so much for again reassuring me that Humanity is not FUBAR. You said everything out loud in your opening monologue to this video that I have been thinking about but not speaking because I have gotten myself under the false perception that no one is listening. You, my friend, are teaching me that it doesn’t matter if no one is listening, and just to “tell my story” anyway. Even if my story is only viewed by one person, I have fulfilled my duty to that person that did view it. You have something that I don’t have, and that’s that “NYC moxey” that people gravitate to. You are indeed kind and compassionate and have more empathy than most people that I have encountered in my life. We are indeed, as a nation, at a crossroads, no one appears to believe anything anymore. Everything in thought, word and deed has been “weaponized” in some form or fashion by TPTB. You are just one person telling his story, with moxey, compassion and empathy, which is why I keep coming back to listen to what you have to say. As I stated in my comments in another video, in a sense, you planted within me to not give up, to not care what anyone else thinks, just grab a camera, any camera that resonates with me, and paint with light my story, my thoughts, etc. Thanks again for such a thought provoking start to my day. Michael

I really appreciate this, thank you. Someone once said to me that they look at RU-vid as performing in front of a live audience, or sitting in a room with a bunch of people, and if you look at it like that, 10 is a good crowd, and then 50, 100, 300, all great audiences in most independent theaters, and then if you get to 1000, which is relatively small to medium of an audience on RU-vid, well, that's a lot of people to get to perform in front of. Most regional theaters are smaller than that, and so, yea, it's all relative and we should never let the statistics get in our heads and destroy the experience we are making for ourselves and for anyone nice enough to watch what we do. I once performed a play in front of ONE PERSON in London as the first week of my run was canceled due to riots in Camden when I was there. That show for this one guy was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had in my career as he was the most awesome audience, laughing, crying, screaming, a standing ovation, we did a Q&A after, I gave him 2 and a half hours of my full show, and he was generous enough to give me his attention and most importantly his heart, and that was enough. More than enough. (he had snuck into the theater while I was rehearsing and begged me to do the show, and so I did). Don't worry about how many or who is watching, someone is going to appreciate what you do, and most importantly, if you need to express yourself creatively, you should never not do that based on anything or anyone outside of you. It all matters. Thanks again for being here, I appreciate it and don't take it for granted.

You hit on the real camera controversy we should talk about! I'm just a hobbiest that wants to do more, so I've avoided all the camera YTer drama for what it is, but I agree there's a bunch of people that have some elitist takes on brands, etc., that I've found just has me ending up 'not following' that person and following others. Some guy posted amazing Lumix G7 (not GH7) footage the other day and I want to follow him and find out what he's doing, not the guy who says you need Sony or Canon.

Man, if you dig deep here on RU-vid, you'll find AMAZING footage shot on a Canon M50, a Sony a6000, phones, GH2's, etc, etc... To me, that's the inspirational stuff, not the fact that a camera can shoot 8k raw. I guess some people care, but at the end of the day, once you get over that "wow" factor, what story are you about to tell? That's what moves me. thanks for coming through!! I really appreciate it.

@RockWILK
@RockWILK 7 дней назад
This is such a great question. I would say go out and shoot three or four shots where there are people in the frame. Or maybe even just animals. Birds, squirrels, whatever you have near you. Really focus on the composition, look at every corner of your shot. Every single thing in the image, be really meticulous with it, and then play all those clips one after another, and in your editing software change the order of those clips, and then see if you can see any story in there. Because there are thousands of stories in those three clips. Let your imagination run wild, focus on the movement, zoom in and look at the expressions in the eyes of either people or the animals, the body language, the way the day looks, whether it be cloudy or sunny, the mood that that creates, look at every single thing that is in that frame, and then think about the things that you can't see visually that are there. How did those people get there? Where did they come from? What happened to them before they got there? What is going to happen to them after they leave the frame? Did they get bad news before they showed up in that frame? Are they sick? Did somebody who they love die? What are they walking into next? Is somebody about to choose them to be the lead in a feature film just because of the way they look? Are they about to get hit by a truck? I know a lot of this sounds crazy, but this is exactly how I work. I'll shoot some simple frames, and I'll look at everything in that frame, and then I see nothing but possibilities. Allow yourself the opportunity to imagine, it's the greatest gift we have. And once you find a story that resonates with you, focus on it, and expand it, get down and write a script. It's so important to write a script, to flush out the story, to write, go to bed, wake up the next day and read what you wrote, and then continue. Be dedicated to that, be disciplined, be committed, and you will create some beautiful stories. At least in my opinion. :-)
