@@dfgoijoi man, that’s a drag. So sorry to hear that. I’ve only seen it two or three times in over two years of using the original S5, and so for a while I was considering buying a used S1H, but then I decided to just kind of let it go and see if it became a real issue. I shot an entire feature film over two years with the S5 and it never showed up, so I think it really depends upon what you’re shooting specifically. Hope you got it figured out somehow, I think it’s an issue that exists even if you have an optical low pass filter, sometimes it’s just unavoidable. And I also use the GH5 as a backup for my S5, and like you, I’ve never seen it appear on the GH5. I think one advantage I have is that I only use vintage lenses and anamorphic, so maybe because my lenses aren’t ultra sharp there’s less chance of it showing up. I don’t know. I don’t think anybody really knows. :-) Anyway, thanks so much for coming through and watching, and for commenting, I greatly appreciate that.
Lens compression has been debunked numerous times. What you're experiencing with the different lenses looking different @ the same focal length-setting are the 1. the manufacturers either mislabeling the lenses for marketing purposes (i.e. your 35mm mike is either really 33mm or 37.5mm or something else - this could apply to your native-whatever lens as well not only the cheap lenses) 2. "focus breathing" (especially prevalent on some zoom lenses) - which is the effect of the focal length of the lens actually changing with focus of the lens (i.e. your Canon/Nikon/Sony 70-200 set @ 200mm is really only a 200mm at infinity focus but an 170mm(while it still says 200mm on the lens barrel) if set at 3m focussing distance ). Lens compression on the other hand has been debunked hundreds of times at this point. It's only the DoF that changes with the smaller Sensor.
I love the frantic narrative style you delivered with this piece of storytelling and the message is absolutely clear to all. Go tell a story. ❤❤❤ Thanks! Inspiring, don't worry about gear videos and just tell a story and then keep telling stories.

the truth that we all need to hear. i literally use my iPhone as my main photo/video taker to prevent my GAS from flaring up lol. i dont have to worry about hunting for sales, which brand has the best IBIS/AF, which lens has the best characteristics, etc. i even sold most of my film and digital gear i collected before/during lockdown and only use my smartphone for 3 years, never felt freer. the only camera gear i have now is a banged up Sony A7s mk1 and a manual focus 7artisans lens just for the fun of it, no more no less.
@@sauzefilms yeah… like I said, my first feature film was shot on an LGV40 and it became an award-winning film. It’s on a bunch of streaming services. I definitely enjoy working with a proper camera, but my Panasonic S5 and my Panasonic GH5 are probably worth about $1000-$1500 combined at this point. :-) And I use these old vintage lenses that you can buy on eBay for $75-$200 each. And even my anamorphic lenses I got for less than $800 combined. So I think once you know what you’re doing, you can get a great story told with pretty much any camera that you have, including your phone.
Awesome, I get caught up in gear and what's funny is I have a super nice camera S5IIX and I now know how to use it very well and end up using an iPhone or very inexpensive Obsbot tail air for almost 95% of my videos lol. Its funny once you actually learn the gear how you find out you don't need to spend a zillion dollars to get the same effect
I totally agree. I shot my first feature film on my phone, and it became an award-winning film, so there's that. I enjoy the process of using a proper camera, and I have the original Panasonic s5, and a gh5 is my secondary camera, and so my two cameras combined cost less than $1,500. :-) I think the only time you need to spend tons of money on one of the top cameras is if you are on set with a production company and they require you to use these cameras. But 99% of the population does not need to buy an fx3, or an s1h, or a Canon r5c. But then again, if you have the money, nobody should tell anybody how to spend it. :-) it's really a very personal thing, but to say you need a certain camera is a fallacy. But like I said, to each his/her own. ;)
@@RockWILKI think that having to figure out how to make one of those “lesser” cameras work is the key to becoming a better videographer. I really like this song you are using. Is it on a platform that it can be licensed? Wouldn’t mind having a little of that goodness on one of my vids.
@@TheRealPivotpodcast that was part of a project that I worked on with somebody else a few years ago, actually many years ago. And so it’s kind of locked up. It was created right after hurricane Katrina. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced licensing site for music, check out Melodie music. So much less expensive than everywhere else and really quality stuff. I use them for a lot of my RU-vid videos, but for my real filmmaking, I only use original music. And as far as the cameras, I really believe that once you have the basics of how to use a camera down, you can use pretty much any camera. You just have to decide how you like to work, and of course, if you’re a part of a set, you’re just gonna use what the producers or Director requires you to use. I really believe that 99% of people who buy cameras are buying something way over their head. But nobody should be able to tell anybody else how to spend their money. :-)
I've been wanting to make videos where I talk about things, and share my thoughts but it's quite scary to me. It's weird because I'm a recording artist, and have no problem pouring my heart and soul into writing, recording and performing. When it comes to speaking though, and just sitting in front of the camera it feels different. I always get the feeling of, who cares? What do I have to say? I think in some ways this anxiety manifests like you describe into an obsession with gear. "If only I have this setup right, then my anxiety will be quelled and I'll finally do it". It's funny, because I shot EVERYTHING on my Lumix g7 with 12-35mm 2.8 from 2015 when I got it to 2023. I'm glad I did it this way, because once I found that lens and camera combo it was stuck on there for years. This year I bought the s5ii, which I think was a well deserved upgrade. I've shot countless music videos, car videos, and thousands of photos with my g7. The s5ii is just more camera than I can even comprehend. All of a sudden, I have amazing AF, IBIS, low light performance, depth of field, and more features. After working around the limitations of the g7 for so long the s5ii almost feels unfair. It's like going from a Honda Civic to a Porsche 911. I could push the civic (g7) to its limits around a track and knew it inside out. Even if it wasn't the fastest I knew exactly how to get it to do what I wanted. Now with the 911 (s5ii), I can fumble around helplessly and still easily destroy the Civic's lap time. Anyways your channel is a breath of fresh air and it's a great reminder of what matters. I love gear like I loved playing with Legos as a child, but there's a time and place. Maybe this is a story I could tell, now that I think about it.
@@lwrcs It is much different because when you simply talk to an audience, you’re doing something that anybody can do. When you’re singing, when you’re making music, very few people can do that. You’re putting yourself on a higher plane than most people. When you talk to an audience from stage in the theater, or when you talk to people into a camera, you’re doing something that everybody does every day. FaceTime. TikTok. People talk into a camera every day. It’s much more intimate, because it’s much more relatable. I was in the music business for a long time, I was a recording artist, I was a studio musician, but nothing I ever did in that world ever felt like being on stage as a solo theater artist and just telling people stories, or inhabiting characters that I created, just me, alone on the stage all by myself. Same thing being in movies, or even just speaking on RU-vid, there’s just something very different about that energy. And yes, it sounds to me like you have some incredible stories to share, and you already have the chops to do it, so I think if it’s something you really wanna do, put the camera in front of your face and start talking. :-) especially now more than ever, I feel like we need to tell stories because I believe that’s the best way to bring people together, no matter what you believe, no matter who you are, no matter where you’re from, if you speak to people looking directly into their eyes, there’s just something so healing about that. So engaging. So compelling. Anyway, as you can see, I definitely don’t know how to tell a short story. :-) Thanks so much for coming through, and for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.

The key things or thought process I should say...that I have always leaned into and practiced for YEARS... is to create with "The Law Of Least Effort." Knowing that "less is more."
@@TopshelfJunior Wow. I'm kind of exactly opposite from that, but the way I feel is that whatever works for you, do that, because at the end of the day, whatever makes you productive is the right way to work. Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate it.

Man after watching your video I had to comment one more thing. You sound like you think your videos aren't good. They seem as good as any other video. I went through that too even thinking I wasn't good enough. Then I started a second channel and a lot of times I will post a video on the 1st channel and it goes no where and then I will post it on the 2nd channel and it will get thousands of views and likes and comments. I’m only shy in real life. On stage, or in front of a camera, that’s where I feel safe. And you’re right, nobody has ever accused me of telling a short story. :-)
The new Canon R1 seems to have amazing autofocus. For sports it can follow the ball and focus on the next player. I'm wondering when this AI can do away with a camera operator altogether, at least in this particular situation. If you think this is far fetched, imagine drones for sports photography that can follow all the action. On the other hand, this advancement of the tech leaves only the intention of the creator as an artist to differentiate between AI and humans. In this case, you may not even need autofocus at all.
@@ryanstark2350 I think all of that can happen, it does not seem out of the realm of possibility to me at all. As far as Auto focus, I don't see anything wrong with it at all, I just don't use it personally, mostly because it's no good on both of my cameras, and most of my lenses are manual lenses anyway. And so it's just my workflow and the way I'm used to working. But if I had a camera with great Auto focus, I'm sure I would figure out how to make good use of it. It's just not a big deal to me personally. I'll tell you this though, I don't think I would ever trust it for a narrative feature, because there's no way any auto focus or AI will be able to read my brain to figure out exactly where I want to focus, especially if I'm shooting wide open. That's just crazy talk to me. I think that's for people who really don't care about critical Focus overall. Which I don't understand, but that's just me.:-) thanks so much for coming through again, I really appreciate it.

Hi! Great video. I've got the Helios 44M 58mm however when I put it on my Lumix s5ii with adapter I cna't focus, meaning it move the ring but nothing is in focus whole the time. Is this something with the adapter? Inifinity focus issue? HELP!?
@@GoceVVV nothing is in focus at all? From any distance? It sounds to me like it's either defective glass, or more likely you just need to adjust your focus ring. I'm not a big Tech person, and lucky for me I have a shop that I go to when I buy vintage lenses so he can clean them up and fix any imperfections. I would either find somebody to help you, or if you know what you're doing, adjust your focus ring. The one problem I did have with my adapter was that when I first put it on, all of the numbers were on the bottom of the lens, so I had to take my adapter apart, and spin the ring inside of it 180 degrees to get the numbers to show up on top so I could see them.
