Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. He was the only child of southern baptists. Keenan has a reputation for being reclusive and controlling of his public image, he dislikes how celebrities are worshipped. I recommend A Perfect Circle's "Judith" named after his mother. She suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a ruptured cerebral hemorrhage that left her paralyzed. The stroke only strengthened her religious beliefs. The song reflects what he felt about the situation "You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be, Oh so many ways for me to show you how the savior has abandoned you." I definitely recommend the lyrics on this one to get the full impact of Maynard's thoughts and emotions.
Another little interesting fact about Maynard, he joined the Army after high school and studied at West Point Prep School. He completed a rigorous math and English curriculum, ran on the cross-country team, and sang in the glee club. He was distinguished in basic and advanced training but declined an appointment to West Point. He knew West Point would not tolerate his dissidence.
The Pot is a great place to start with TOOL. It has all their modern trademark things that they’re known for (amazing instruments, killer vocals, odd time signatures,) plus a cool funk element that’s not seen a lot in their music. It’s also probably one of their more mainstream songs
@@charlesreactss another one you would likely enjoy is Tool's Right in Two, I would stick with lyric videos with tool though, it will give you a better understanding of what he is singing about
There is very little live Tool that is worth listening to. They never allow filming at their concerts, they've never put out a live video performance themselves. There is a live remastered version of this song, Sober, from 1993 that is FANTASTIC, but otherwise, the "live" versions are just concerts/songs that were filmed by fans on cameras or later phones. So basically, other than the live Sober, don't bother with live video. There are some audio live songs, on an official album called "Salival" that are incredible. I am subbing for more Tool.
Yes this is the intro to Tool, very simple song from them but hypnotic. My opinion for the follow up is the song 46&2, that is the proper order for discovering Tool.
I highly recommend audio-only versions of their songs because their music videos really have nothing to do with the music and can easily distract from their great music. They are a very detail oriented band where every single member plays amazingly and contribute equally to the overall songs.
Totally agree !! The music videos are distracting and trying to relate the music to the video is an exercise in futility because they really just for mind-fuck purposes !!
This was my 1st tool song that got me hooked and that was back in 1995..enjoy the journey my brothers it just gets better and remember there is not bad album or tool song ,so any song will be 🔥🔥
Great reaction man, you should check out the live version of this, it'll be the first one that pops up, they have a big playlist and a huge fan base lol, also check out Undertow, Push It, H., or Eulogy, some of their older stuff to start with, have fun running down this rabbit hole, peace bro
@@charlesreactss Yes, the '93 live version from the Reading Festival is a classic! They manage to do a create job of reproducing a similar sound to the studio version with the addition of lead singer Maynard's stunning character performance for the song. Charles, you'll love it!
Tool lyrics are highly thought provoking and are intended to be so. They make you pause for thought and question everything. The band as a whole put crazy amounts of work to put albums together. Its truly taken as an art for all of them. You definitely picked a good song as the intro. Enjoy 😉 Try "Aenima" or "46 & 2" or "Prison Sex" or "Schism" or "Hooker with a Penis" or "Lateraulus"
The song is about a friend of the band who was also an artist . His thing was he was only creative when under the influence. It’s adapted from another song the singer had in a band when he was in college. Dig deeper brother this band has things no other band on earth can bring to the table . Great video man no faking the looks on your face that’s for damn sure this was real !
Late gettin here. I've said it before, but I hella dig it when people discover music I grew up on. I had Tool CDs (sometimes cassettes) in grade school, and in high school. We'd "trade" CDs/cassettes...like some dude would lemme borrow all of his Pantera albums and he'd borrow all of my Marilyn Manson. Good times. Another great rabbit hole. If ya do end up likin Tool, ya may wanna check out A Perfect Circle. Maynard started that band in like 1999 and is the vocalist also. 🖤🤘🏻💀🤘🏻🖤
Every song by this band is gold. Since you started with Sober...you should back up just one more album amd listen to them in order...you will see how they have perfected their art over the years...good journey to you :) Fun fact...the video was done by their guitarist. Adam Jones..he was a special effects artist in hollywood before they got signed. He did effects for Jurrasic park. Eduard scissorhands. And terminator.
Morning Charles , well you picked a hell of a first from them .... again I love the fact you FEEL music and say it if you do I am just a worthless liar I am just an imbecile I will only complicate you 😞 It’s one of those songs that forces you to look inside and hold yourself accountable for your part in what went wrong and makes you beg for the times before you fucked up what was golden I just want to start this over .... the “extra” you hear is what forces to that point Glad you liked it Now 46 and 2 should be next
If you'll be doing more Tool the #ToolArmy will find you. My recommendations right now for Tool are : The Grudge, and Vicarious.. followed by lots more Tool. I'm subscribing. 😁
Glad you did the official audio (don't get distracted by their strange videos. It's debatable on whether they actually mean anything related to the song). Many reactions are too the 90s live concert. The performance is great but the sound quality sucks. EDIT: You are correct. "Why can't we NOT be sober?" They had a musician friend that could only play when he was wasted. 🤷♂️
When it comes to tool, just skip the videos (even official ones), for first listens. Just enjoy the music. And ofc, break it down and share your thoughts :)
My ears are ringing 😯 with the volume going from whisper level to decibel distortion. No offense to fans, just not something I'd listen to over & over again; once was sufficient. Nice job with your own decision to give it a second listen; sometimes lyrical content is revealed to mean other than you'd initially thought. Toxic? hmm...
