What i keep telling these educated idiots where I work not a hammer big enough to make them listen

I learned this accidentally. I thought in my son’s bedroom bigger the better, cool off quickly. Well the humidity averaged up to 64% in his room . Not good . Finally after research i found out they need proper btu level for the room size to work properly. Till i can replace with lower btu i ended up having to force the fan to stay on slowest speed and open his door. After that his room averages around 55% humidity. For 700square foot i would much rather use ductless mini splits. My ducted central ac died on me and I’m converting to ductless . I hate ducted central ac. So much heat gain from the open ducts into the ceiling. No amount of insulation will make up for that heat here in Florida . No constant highs and lows with ductless as you get with central ac. Plus all my rooms will have there own thermostat as my son prefers his room around 4 deg warmer the i and , wife do in ours. 4 ton in 700 square feet will result in very high humidity

I can only imagine the supply vents. They must blow like a hurricane lol or at least when it was first installed

I have 3 tons in 2400 sqft home in Dallas Texas. Most home in the area has 5 tons unit. Our home is well insulation and Wrap around porch. So a properly built home save energy!

Sounds like messed up situation. A way you could try and overcome the over sized unit is put in a thermostat that one has dehumidification control and two set the cycles per hour very low so the unit runs longer. The dehu function will allow the system to over cool the space to reach its set humidity.

The only rationale I can think of is I'm guessing that it is oversized for so Heat pump can run without the Aux heat kicking in?? This would only make sense if it were an old house with no insulation. Other possibility is that this system was made of spare parts as well.

@@JeffsHVACAdventures Works for me, it was a old lennox r22 system removed for upgrade. I live in south Texas. My garage doors face south and when i had unInsulated doors that garage was like a oven. I put Insulated doors and the ac in. I can turn it on with a wifi switch from my phone, go in the garage 10 mins later and it will already be 15 degrees lower than the outside temp. Sometimes I'll let her run and drop that temp to 60 to amaze my friends. Add a sound system and a flat screen and you're all set.

That's a huge garage but even at that it seemed like it would always feel wet in there as the unit doesn't run long enough to remove the humidity

Overpriced like Trane. Expensive parts and usually backordered. A great brand is only as good as the guys installing it. A lower brand, installed properly, will last for years. Pocket the savings.

Yea those Gree units sound pretty nice. I can safely say I've seen 0 Grees here on the eastern shore of MD.

@@JeffsHVACAdventures are you near the cheasapeak bay area anyway if you can get them I would recomend one of those for your 4 ton guy. In the 3 ton but if 3 tons is too much you can change the dip switch settings to 2 ton on the air handler. And condenser But with them you need to use nylog blue and be careful not to over torque just like a mini split. But unlike most mini splits it does have a high side pressure port so you can vacuam the high side. And take high side readings just like what you are used too. And the reason why I am not crazy about daikens. Lennox, or trane or carrier with inverter technology is because I don't like that they require things like proproitery thermostats and are way overkill for the prices. I like the gree flexes and the Mr cool universals are fine, if you follow proper procedures and ignore the manuals and let a pro install them. And tell the hvac tech to pull out the air handler blower motor and properly balance the blower wheel. Before installing any of them. With Mr cool And the other issue I have with mr. cool is telling consumers install the quick connect linesets. And if you use them you don't need to vacuam the system out before releasing the refrigerant that's false. And has caused a lot of problems. Especially with guys then having issues because they did not buy gauges and a vacuam pump. I am telling you this because a hvac tech also from Maryland posted a video on one of the mr cool mini splits. And it was having problems that's associated with not vacauming out the system and leak testing before releasing the refrigerant. I did tell him this information so he knows what to look for with the Mr cool minisplits. But in this case I think a gree flex is the better alternative. But maybe you could test a Mr cool universal doing everything the correct way with the so called quick no vac linesets and see how they hold up. But really they should in the instruction manuals for the mini splits and universal series still put in there to vacuam down the system with a gauge set and a good vacuam pump. And I think it would go a long way. And more hvac guys like yourself I think would be willing to install them. As the Mr cool universal series is very similar to the gree flex but gree unlike mr cool properly balances the blower wheel in the air handler at the factory and does not sell or market quick connect linesets and says vacuam out the system and that's how it should be.

AC Units are not sized on square feet.

Not on SqF alone but it is one of the main factors and a good rule of thumb

@@shentx you are right, square feet is just one of the data points used when doing a manual J heat load calculation. There are many other data points needed to give an accurate heat load calculation. I’m just a homeowner, I’m not trying to pretend I’m a HVAC technician.

Defenetely way oversized. A 2 ton maybe 3 ton max but 3 ton is pushing it. But depends on how well the house is insulated.

If it was out of R22 that is 8 lbs. That would be costly

@@grego10r Yeah and you also get a very humid and uncomfortable house with large temperature swings and a huge power bill with lots of wear on the equipment from the constant cycling. If you want to be able to cool your house quickly without as many downsides, look into inverter driven systems. A lot of the time, they can be oversized a bit without causing problems since they can run at partial capacity when needed.

Cool and damp equals mold promotion. A proper sized unit should run around 70-80% to dehumidify the air.

Every part of the country is different. What we charge in Maryland might not be what they charge in NYC or South Carolina. But I’d say for just changing out the outdoor unit your looking at anywhere between $3000-5000.

In your part of the country (Northern) 3.5 ton for 1500 SqF seems properly sized. However it's impossible to know with out a proper Load Calculation or Manual J. A rule of thumb here in MD is 1 CFM per SqF. That would put you at around a 4 ton unit. We are a little warmer climate than you though. The run time on some systems can be increased right at the thermostat by increasing the cycles per hour. However if your system is communicating or if you have a matched Lennox stat, there may be more involved with it. Either way, you might want the contractor back out to discuss your issues.

That's pretty close to the rule of thumb we use here in MD. Every climate is different of course. We do about 30 BTU per SqF. Some guys do 1 CFM per SqF. Gets you pretty close either way.

Your going to want have a proper load calculation done to see exactly how much cooling you need but your probably going to need something in the 3 to 4 ton range

1 ton per 500 sq ft. As someone said its just rule of thumb. Vaulted ceilings ,windows ,and insulation have impact
