CampingRandy Patreon: / campingrandy Off and on for two weeks I have worked on this no crank - no start issue on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Zero help online and youtube. I replaced the started, took apart the ignition, checked relays. Put it in neutral and park again. Well - its the Neutral Safety Switch (they get dirty). Heres a link on how to clean as they are $241 new from Advanced Auto Parts. Thanks
BleepinJeep (sorry I said Flipping Jeep in my video)! I bypassed by taking the cover off the starter relay to bypass. I am leaving mine this way as its a one person start, if I have another issue. Enjoy.

Was going to bring my daughter mcdonalds for her 1st day of 5th grade today and jeep wouldnt start, googled "99 xj relay location" this video was the second video that popped up, read the description and started watching, 4 minutes later i was out in my car moved my shifter back and forth 15 or 20 times and now it works... awesome! thanks man..!!

Oh I know. I have noticed if you shift from park to first back to park ten times, it usually gets the oil off. But just taking the top off the relay is full safe. I keep the relay top off but have the fuse cap on so it stays clean.

Genius. This saved me from calling a tow truck. It also works perfectly for when your ignition lock cylinder goes bad...and they do go bad. My key spun freely and wouldn't engage the starter. This got me home and to autozone to buy the cylinder and security torx set. Thank you.

Brother you just saved the day. I have been dealing with this shite for a week now and could not figure things out. I just watched you video and then stepped out to the garage and low and behold. IT STARTED!!! Thank you can not explain my happiness towards this mess and now such an easy solve. If I followed NAPA they had me buying a new started, new alternator and new battery. Neutral safety switch and I will call Monday to place my order. Thank you again... Cheers...

I know, isn’t it crazy!!! I replaced and checked so many things and it’s the oil the leaks down into the neutral safety switch. So glad to help!

Tho the starter was tired and worked slow like a low battery, I replaced the starter as the battery tested good. I had the a similar no start issue and tried the relay trick as you did. Fired right up! Yes, the old starter was very tired as the new one was very strong. I might guess the NSS might also be an issue, but now I know how to bypass it when I ge a no start. I'll save that for a later day. Thanks.

My 96 Cherokee is my first car. Wouldn’t start after work today, so obviously I was having a million thoughts rushin through my mind. “Ah fuck it’s broken. Never gonna start. I’m screwed now, I’m stuck here.” My friend stuck it in neutral, and it started right up. Came home, did some research, found your video, and now I know what to do if it doesn’t start! Thanks a ton.

OMG!! This is exactly what happend to my 99 jeep xj one day out of the blue, my dash lights would ding and come on like normal but when turned the key over nothing..like at all, no click nothing...i was stranded in town all day and finally had a buddy come and put it on a trailer and towed it home. it was only later did i finally find something about bypassing the starting relay so i figured WTH. BOOM started up like nothing. so i thought i just needed a new relay right? nope nothing, didnt do shit. so ive literally have been bypassing it for two years now. pretty annoying

It actually happened today. Took the Jeep out after a week or two of sitting. Drive up to the post office. Came back out wouldnt start. I’m getting really good at it one handed. Not evening propping the hood. Lol - just lift the hood, pop the fuse cover off, and press the relay. VROOOOM STARTUP. Have a great day. Thanks for watching!

If it's the neutral safety switch that's the only problem you can just put it in neutral and it will start

Easier way to do this is take a ground wire ground it and plug into the relays starting pin 87 I think

The relay is not firing due to the neutral safety switch covered in oil.

Fyi, for all... My 99 XJ 4.0 Automatic 4x4 didn't start this morning. It cranked but won't start. I started looking for diagnosis videos and finally decided to remove both battery terminals, wait a minute or so, reconnected them and it started up perfectly. I have no idea what happened but I hope this helps someone else.

I am having the same no crank no start symptoms. I tried the trick with the relay and I still wasn’t getting anything. I can see a small spark when the two pieces make contact but still no crank. My battery is good too. I am not sure how to proceed.

So you had no start power but lights came on when key is turned . when you had your key turned to on then you just press down on the relay and starts right up? We have a 1996 jeep cherokee sport 2 door rear wheel drive automatic . it just turns over no spark. Replaced everything in the engine bay still nothing changed out the o2 sensors . hope its the neutral safety switch.

Vintage Moparnut1978 yes - after putting in a new starter and doing all the normal things you are supposed too diagnose. Long story short it’s the neutral safety switch at the transmission. I just bypass by pushing in the relay as you see with the ignition key set to on. I only have to do when the Jeep sits for a while. If I had to do this every time, I would replace the neutral safety switch.

Toward the side facing the firewall or rear of the truck. You can see a little copper flap with a circle.

It's either the solenoid on the top of the starter, they get oil, water grime in them and eventually burn out. Replace it for $40. Or it's the relay that you grounded out, $8 or so.

Sorry to be a smart ass but I mentioned I replaced the starter as that is what everyone “thinks” is the issue. This was the whole point of the video it’s not the starter. Test the solenoid in the engine bay first to show it’s not a starter issue. My issue, as many others, is the neutral safety switch.

Yes there are two clips on each side after you unplug it from the board.

Have a question I have what looks like a solid green wire and a black and red wire under the dash in front of the fuse panel that runs under the door trim both wires are cut do you have any idea what these go to

I can use the screw driver workaround to start my 1991 xj... But even after I took out my nss and cleaned it it still doesnt start... Any ideas?

Even though you cleaned it, it may still be defective. You may have to shell out the $240 for a mew one. I just bought online at Advance Auto using code COUPON25 to get 25% off. Hope this helps.

@@jamesark9926 OHHHHHH - you unplug the relay and remove the black cover. After removing the cover you can see the relay internal parts. Turn your key to on position, then touch (push) the connections together with the screw drive. Starts right up. If the neutral safety switch is bad, it won’t let the starter relay engage. You are basically bypassing the neutral safety switch. Does that help? If not message me at @campingrandy on Instagram. I can send an additional video if needed.
