@@pabloflores5031 Ska is a music genre with roots in Jamaica. Kinda like a rockin' reggae with a mix of bebop style jazz. Typically carried by a funky bass line and unique off beat style drums. Sublime is kinda Ska too if you know them.
I know that Gwen gets a lot of the spotlight in this group but goddamn...the instrumental arrangements for this album were absolutely spot on. Never a dull moment.
yeah.. I look back on all of the 90's bands with disdain... but I heard this at Safeway today and I played it in my AirPods and it was banging. I listen to djent and metal... but this is bangin! Even a lot of their 2000 stuff was really really good.
Man being a teenager in the 90s it seemed like no matter what type of music you were into everyone was listening to these guys when tragic kingdom dropped. I have vivid memories of listening to this album on my walkman on the way to school every day and although I would rather listen to spiderwebs or don't speak at that time I've come to realize this track is the true gem of the album
I'm pretty sure that's still a thing-except now, it's not kids but 30-year-olds with heart problems, and it's not from their garage, but out of a McDonald's.
@@dannymorrison9738 I know right!?! My grandma didn’t know who they were, so when she told my mom why she was closing the shop for today, she said, “Some blonde lady is filming a video.”
@@Peyton_Editz haha I'm probably the same age as your mom. (15 when this came out) Ah, the 90s. Simpler times. This video reminds me of how many polo shirts I owned back then lol.
I'm not a fan of them, but my recently deceased friend was so big on them, and I guess this popped up at the most perfect time. Thanks Dave, I'll miss ya forever buddy.

I lost my mom last year (4/22/22) and this was her favorite band. I remember her blasting No Doubt albums though the house when she was cleaning or cooking and singing along. Every time I hear this song I can see a memory of her giving me smile and hearing her singing. You are truly missed Mom, I can’t wait to see you again. ~Christel Lee Helen Severns~ ~10/1/1971 - 4/22/22~
Did you know the story of how Adrian got the gig? He lied about how long he'd been drumming and basically just winged it & b.s.'d his way through the audition.
This house and store owned by the grandparents on the mother's side was only used for this video. Yes that's her grandfather at the counter. The Stefani grandparent's house is where Eric Stefani (who is seen on the driveway) and drummer Adrian Young lived, where they practiced, recorded demos, and filmed the Just a Girl video.
@@aureliemialocq3404 unfortunately the Ohio Street back patio that we see if the last half of this video seriously changed and not in a good way. Nobody should ever want to see the back patio area today. Whoever has been owning this house over the years never did anything to take care of it and it looks awful. Nobody should ever want to go over there. Just keep watching this video and remember the back patio the way it was in this video with this cool Polynesian rock structure thing and the fence with a gate covered with ivy.they have the camera really filming this entire back patio you could see it from all angles and you are going to be hugely disappointed if you go look at it now. Everybody should stay away.
my friend showed me this music video months ago, was not expecting to see Terry Hall in this video. we have definitely different music taste and it was cool for a moment to find a way we could relate with something small like that R.I.P Terry ❤
@nickyc777 what happened man?? Im sad too man... In the late 90s I used to be in a punk band... That was my livelihood... But then now im unemployed, alone, addicted to painkillers, and living in my parents basement. I miss the 90s so much... Such a simpler time... People were simple, honest, happy and straight to your face back then unlike the new age, depressed social media hypocrite, back stabbing generation of today. If you lived in the 90s, you would be able to easily and directly notice the differences between 90s people and todays mentally sick two timing people.
@@CreutzfeldJakobDiseasepatient Aww brother, I'm really sorry to hear that... I've been there. Things certainly weren't perfect in the '90s but, yes, much much simpler - and we had no idea what insanity and trauma was in store for the next 20+ yrs. I've been slowly coming out of that place that severe illness and disability - and eventual addiction - took me. It is possible to get out, by finding things that work for you, but I know it's hard to keep any shred of hope and not just give up. Keep breathing, homey! Edit: As I'm sure you know, music is one of the only things to lean on when everything else is 💩.
Without TERRY HALL of The Specials (in this video) a new generation of fans--like No Doubt and *countless* other bands wouldn't exist...or wouldn't`t be as good as it was. The list is staggering. What a great video that reflected resilience, humor, excitement and disappointment....
I've always loved this video; it's so much fun: colorful, joyful, free spirited, and yeah a little wistful. Terry's presence in it just added to its specialness (errrrr... no pun intended).

Mainly because she's of the 'pre social media addict' age. She kept fit (No doubt shows were a workout in themselves) and because of this she still looks better than most girls barely half her age.
she was fierce. as a solo artist she sounds just like the same mass produced pop crap you see everywhere..... with no doubt she helped shape the 90s with her awesome style and voice.
Apparently her ex Gavin said Gwen was a terrible cook and what happened to her this vid (cutting her finger) is unfortunately not an unusual occurrence.
And Fun Boy Three. The Specials inspired another famous Ska fans. Group of boys who called themselves Madness. Title of a song from Buster the king of Ska. I really enjoyed how No Doubt use the ska influence in many of their songs.
@@easkels Madness were not inspired by The Specials. Madness were formed a year before The Specials. Both bands were inspired by the original ska of the 1960s, which in turn inspired reggae. The Specials and Madness were part of the ska revival, colloquially known as "Two Tone Ska" after the record label formed by Jerry Dammers of The Specials, alongside bands such as The Selector, The Beat and Bad Manners.
I grew up in Anaheim and passed that store every time I walked to school. And I remember going with my friends after school, buy snacks and walk to my house and hang out. Those were the good days.
ipeople change grow up my god people I've seen this comment about other people too its getting old u don't like it don't listen if they didn't change the same people would complain that there boring
Every No Doubt album is very different. The one before this was very ska punk and poppy (some would say second wave of New Wave, genre that didn’t go far..), Tragic Kingdom (The album this song is on) is very alternative with some ska to some songs, any album after this till their first breakup was pop with just rock instruments, ever heard Its My Life, Running or anything past the Tragic Kingdom World Tour
This was my favorite song on the album back in the day (with "Hey You" as a close second), but I didn't think it had a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a single. Mainly because they had already released 4 singles, with "Excuse Me Mr." being the 4th and also probably my least favorite cut from the CD if I'm being honest. Yet I still remember writing in a fan letter to the band that if they released this as a single, then Tragic Kingdom would definitely go on to sell over 10 million copies. It was close at the time. A few months later, I had MTV on in the background. The TV was muted, but I could tell by the what I saw (the drummer tapping rapidly) that odds were pretty good it was Sunday Morning. And lo and behold, it was! I remember being so happy that day. As it turns out, the album has now sold over 16 million copies. I'll never know to this day if my letter played any part whatsoever, no matter how small, in this song becoming a single, but I'd like to think I did my part.
@@mariamatute9848 cool i actually found this 1 year ago but i didnt care for it, but this year i got into sublime and ska and i gave no doubt another chance and it was a great desicion

This ish makes me wanna be mad at Tony too 😤. That or argue with my multi personalities. My good and bad meets my bad & good. The way she turns around looking like a psycho
The video was shot in their home town of Anaheim which is about 40 miles east of LA. The downtown neighborhood including market are completely unchanged and about 100 years old.
I wasn’t even alive when this song was made but it somehow makes me wildly nostalgic. I wish I got to see No Doubt in their prime. Tragic Kingdom is an incredible album.
Haven't watched this video in years and I was all "Wait, who is that? ... Oh!" He's a human Easter egg. It's as if they decided "The right people will figure out he's one of our heroes."
Ugh, very distressed that a song that came out only 20 years ago is getting the "im only ___ yrs old and I luv this not the crap today" comments. Really? The difference between this and current pop music is pretty minimal. Yes, there's great stuff from the 90s. There's great stuff from the 60s. There's great stuff from the 1880s. And there's great stuff now. Liking this song has no relationship with your age, and you're not special just for being young. If you think all modern music is crap, you're not trying hard enough. There was a ton of crap in every previous era, too; time has filtered much of it out and left it forgotten. That's the primary difference. /soapbox

I’m in high school now and im obsessed with this band. I’m about to be a senior in high school, and I’ve been jamming to this since the end of eight grade. This band has my whole heart. I’ve been gifted a record player and now I’m working on buying all of their records. So far I have Return of Saturn and I just bought The Singles. I wanna get B Sides and Remixes so bad next. I’m so excited 😭🔥🔥
@@CheijnuggetI need to figure out how to get you my copy of Tragic Kingdom, signed by the whole band. I basically said everything you just commented right to their faces & Gwen said “aaaawe. Thank you!!” and she hugged me. In retrospect, the hug was a brilliant way for her to get me to stop rambling 😆😭😅🥹
2 of my favorite things about this song: 1) didn’t realize she was actually vocalizing the beat when she sings “you sure have changed since yesterday.” it blends in so seamlessly. so talented 2) at 3:10 when she says “and now you’re looking like I used to” and tony is at her feet cleaning up the spaghetti sauce. i think she’s referencing how in love she was with him. she used to be at his feet because she wanted to keep him. idk if that makes sense
Basically every song in Tragic Kingdom is about them. Tony didn't want to be with her from the start, she kinda pressured him into dating her and in the end it didn't work out.
Es mi parte favorita de la canción, esas voces adicionales durante el coro (algo como "shu shu shu shu" justo debajo del “you sure have changed since yesterday.”) y el "nana nana nana nana na" 🥰
I feel honored to be part of Anaheim and to realize that the house next to the convenience store @1:47 was actually my grandparents house, thank you Gwen for being such an inspiration. Still today that convenience store is there and shopping feels like walking with Gwen.
holy shit haha i run by that store several times a week on my daily jogs. i live down the street from there and yes i can confirm it's still there. wonder why they put it in the video, if they're actually from this neighborhood.
If ya read my note......yyou know the area and i went to that area alot....small stores.I used to go to " Tracy'S bar " in Long Beach and they loved it in 85 or 86 or so and packed and i could'nt get in....so i sat on the bench 20ft from the door and the sound was clear and crisp...magic sound that night....but after that they change there clubs to play in.😉😖😖😖😣🎵🎵🎼🎼🎶🎤🎸
So damn good. Well written, well played. A tight band exhibiting just how tight they really were. I bought my daughter this CD. I'll have to ask her whether she still likes it...
I love this band so much. First Gwen has such a great voice especially for this genre and her style. She was meant to be an icon. Another thibg that always reminds me of ND are those bass lines. As a bassist I've always been impressed with Tony's skills and lines. Damn, such a great band 😍
It was amazing to be 16, seeing No Doubt open for Bush as your first concert, and falling in love with them. They’re my all time favorite band. The first 3 albums are my young years and I will always cherish them so much. I wouldn’t trade those memories.
My oldest son's first show was The White Stripes in 2003. Another amazing band that we will never see again, in all their glory. Good for Gwen, but these guys wrote the songs that shot her to stardom and i feel she left them high and dry.
Amen "HoldontoJesus"! I loved No Doubt from the years I played rhythm guitar as a punk musician. I do not listen to that kind of music anhymore. Then, I saw an article this week about Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Apparently, she is a faithful Christian. Good news! I decided to revisit this song. Sunday morning has a new significance for me as well.
@@nick-lv3rh So to you that's not a band break up? Well I hope I'm wrong but I saw them on their 7 days in Hollywood concert right before their world tour was supposed to happened. The band broke up right after that the tour never happened. Something happened online too between them One of the guys from the band went on twitter and said he found out online and Gwen replied back online saying that's not true I told you and he said no you didn't. I honestly don't remember if it was about the tour not happening or them breaking up I don't remember it was so long ago now. Besides I really don't think Blake will let her play in the band anyways because her ex is in the band. I would love to see them play again though.
