Charles Mackay was a Scottish poet, journalist, author, anthologist, novelist, and songwriter.
Mackay was a part of the Chartist movement, which campaigned for the working-class people of England to gain political rights, suffrage, and influence. It was at its most popular from 1838 to 1948.
The first female prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher drew strength at her darkest moments by reading the verses of a Scottish Victorian poet.
The prime minister kept a copy of No Enemies by Charles Mackay in a scrapbook. The poem argues that brave people must make foes if they are to change the world.
