Probably has something to do with one of the first lair games. In a flashback Donnie looked so scared and lost with beach balls flying everywhere.

Headcanon: he's afraid of the fact a beachball can't go underwater no matter how hard you push it downwards, which is what he did when he was a kid and then got knocked out by the beachball when it went back up due to pressure
