Garrett needed several acres of tall weeds mowed down last October. Our John Deere 1025R gets the job done but it isn't fun. Katriel, the Flip Flop Farmer, participates in the unpleasantness. Garrett is preparing for a garden, chickens and goat - modern homesteading.

I have a 5 and 7 year old girl. I hope they both still want to be a part of my work when they are older. This gives me hope. I came to watch Bush hogging and I'm leaving hoping for the best for my girls.

When I mow when the fluffy seeds/pollen, etc are really bad, I take the leaf blower with me to the field I'm mowing in and set it on the ground near where I'm mowing. Then every other time I pass by it, I have to get off the tractor and blow the screen and radiator clean.

Great video, Something I do to make the ride smoother is extend the top link. I let the mower tire touch a few inches before I reach my desired cutting height. I do this so when I hit bumps, I don't pull all the weight of the mower of the ground. Also it is your fan that pulls in the debris in not just the height of the tractor. Happens on on a tractor comparable to the 5 series that I use.

Tim, you could mow the short direction to have the wind from the side instead of head on. That might delay the overheating and the large amount of seeds in the cowling. If you decide to get a 2025r look into a flail mower. Or Garrett should look into a flail if he decides to get a tractor.

I wonder if you could keep a small airtank mounted someplace on the tractor with a small hose by that filter where you could turn a nob to shoot a little compresed air on that filter to blow it out ever so often when cutting tall grass like that.

That guy really needs to disk that lot then use a drag or roller to get the bumps out. Then he wouldn’t have the rough ride in the future. Tim, I have the same issue with overheating on my 1025. I used it last year to cut down 3 acres of sorghum and had to clean out the pre filter several times. I did buy a Frontier 48" Rotary Cutter (RC2048) with the slip clutch and chains. boy am i glad i did or it would have ate a few shear pins. Anyway, great video as always and agree a 1025r is in his future! oh, i did buy an Original Cab Co. cab and called them to tell them it was because of you and your video. i will send you some pictures tomorrow if you would like.

Tim, with that mower, I believe it throws cut material to the left. Make the outer most lap with the left side inside the field. Then go the opposite way as to leave the cuttings out in previous lap, exhaust pointed away from tall grass and slow down the ground speed to not work the tractor so hard.

I love your videos, I also have a 1025r and regular use it to help the community. I don't know you notice this. The neutral safety switch is located on the bottom of your tractor and the hydraulic filter is not well protected. My deere service manager state, " This tractor is not designed to cut thick brush" and advise me to put a skid plate under it. I dont have a belly mower. We have a weed called Dogfennel and when it dies it become like standing sticks. Even with the bucket pushing them down. They have managed to damage my Netrual Saftey switch.

Good morning Tim. Just catching up on your videos. I wanted to share with you what I did when I cut taller grass like you were doing. I used a big piece of the soft black screen to rap around the outside of the front of the grill of the tractor. This will help out tremendously keeping all that debris from getting to the inner filter and you can visually see when the new outer filter needs to be cleaned off. I don’t keep the screen on all the time because it looks a little crappie but it really does work great. I hope it may help you on your next tall grass cutting. See you on the next one bud.

To help you go longer between cleaning out so you don't run hot. Go to the local hardware store and buy some porch screen. Place it on the outside and against the hood. This will catch some of the debris from getting into the filters and radiator area. My grandfather did this on his early 60's Massey Ferguson 35 believe it or not it caught a lot of the debris and all you had to clean of was the screen. It does look a little weird but it works. So try that and see if it will help you out.
@ohiovalleypondandexcavatio2114
It fixes all the problems we have with a 1025. Don’t get me wrong I loved mine when I had it but it has its issues. It is very side to side tippy 2038 issue solved. Tires to small for rough Terrain solved over heating while bush hogging easy fix solved. Lift capacity solved. You can put on wheel spacers and still use the 60 inch deck problem fixed. Now rear implement lift height not an issue and best of all still goes through a five foot gate. And has the power to pick up and pull an mx5 or a six foot king cutter I have used both.

Just a thought, when my 1025r overheats, (from a clogged radiator screen, just like you had). I actually leave it running (idling) while I take the screen out to clean it) it'll cool off much faster. If you shut it off, I think it will actually heat up more, which is something you don't want if it's already overheated. So I would just let it idle while taking the screen out to clean it. By the time you get the screen out, clean it, put it back in and get back on the tractor, it's already cooled down.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
Did you listen? I just described that. However, leaving it running WHILE you pull the screen up is not wise. The junk falls off the removable screen, and is immediately sucked into the radiator...where it is MUCH more difficult to get out. Shut it off...quickly clean the removable screen and re-insert, then start back up again quickly....as I demonstrated in this video.
@AirplaneDoctor_

I think when it comes to running a bush hog regularly, you are right about a bigger tractor. A smaller model can have ample pto power, but being so close to the ground the debris filled air and rough ride wears you down quickly, it does indeed take the fun out of it. I use a cabless IH 706 and 6ft BH Squealer just for those reasons and find it quite relaxing.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
Yea, a 706 stands up so much taller. Do you have a diesel or gas 706? My family has a gasser.
@AirplaneDoctor_
@AirplaneDoctor_ 6 лет назад
Tractor Time with Tim I have a gasser, bought it originally for blowing snow because they start so easy in our lovely northern winters. People can knock owning the old gas engine tractors , but compared to the diesel engines of the same era, they are a breeze to maintain and overhauls and parts are markedly cheaper.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
My understanding is that the 706 diesels were not as good as the gassers. Now, the 856 diesel engine was incredible.

I agree a bigger tractor is better for this job! I really enjoy bush hogging on our John Deere 3039r. It has a cab, so out of the dust and crap as well! We used to have a 1980’s Kubota 2wd open cab tractor (much smaller, don’t know the model though) the reason we traded it was that it was burning a quart of oil an hour, and we kept getting attacked by bees. It also had turf tires, so constantly getting stuck. The Deere has a bigger bush hog, and much more power, as well as an air suspension seat!

Nice video. You'll find you'll get far fewer seeds and gunk in the radiator (and your face) if you keep the loader arms up high above the weeds. Remove the bucket first for stability. I run a 42hp tractor and it suffers the same heating problems, most tractors do, from shattered seed heads. Cheers, Andrew

well, there you go! My machine (Branson 4125) is a fair bit higher than the JD1025 so I find in most grasses having the loader arm higher does work well at reducing the shattering - although I'd have the same issues you had in a field like the 'mowing a jungle' vid. The other reason I like the loader (with bucket) in unknown fields where I can't see much is to keep it real low to find obstacles before my tires or attachment does! I'm just starting to video working with my machine - ru-vid.com/show-UCiXcFnT8hafX8RuTgp4EnPA?

Thank for all your videos. It has really shown what a small tractor can do. I have been thinking 1025r now that I see this I looked at a 2025r today more ground clearance and softer ride with larger tires. My purpose for a tractor is mostly front bucket work and grapple work. Some mid mount mowing maybe 2x a month. Bushogging when needed. For a first time purchase the 2025r is looking good.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
2025R sounds like a good fit. 2032R/2038R would likely be an even better fit! You will find a major difference in capability between 2025R and 2032R
@joshh7002
@joshh7002 6 лет назад
Tractor Time with Tim . I have looked at those I really like them best my only concern is wieght with them. The 2032r is around 2500lbs. The towing wieght is not a problem just the working wieght if on a lawn doing a project I am concerned of turf damage. I really like the grapple you showed from artillian. Thanks
@JohnnyRebKy
@JohnnyRebKy 6 лет назад
If your cutting on rough ground and wont be doing loader work you can reduce your tire pressure for a softer ride. The tires and pressure are basically the suspension. The pressure rating on the tires are for maximum load knowing a loader will be used with the tractor. I haven't done any bush hogging with my 1025R yet but I definitely will let a few pounds out so it doesn't beat me to death lol. As you probably know even big tractors with large tires will beat you to death with the tires blown up tight. Thank God for air seats ehhh

Yep, first time mine shut off was when I learned about it over heating. My whole tractor shut off. Haven't let it happen again. I must be one of the weird ones. Because of the bouncing around while mowing helps my back. It's like the bouncing and twisting around pops my back, back in place. So I don't mind it but I don't go fast. If Garrett was to disc that field it would smooth it out a lot. Or better yet, he could get you to till the whole thing. That would take you a while to do but it would be fun as long as it wasn't to dusty. :) To bad I'm not closer, I'd love to help you do it just for the price of a hamburger. :)

Think its more of a trade off.I have a 3033r with a Deere MX5 cutter,does an excellent job.The advantage is can get closer and I think it gives a better ,more groomed cut than a larger bush hog..I have some areas i cut about twice a month and it looks like a lawn mower cut it.One thing I have learned is Deere makes the best bush hogs and the most expensive,but worth it in my opinion.

The reason it’s overheating is because of the DPF filter on the engine. When you put a load on the engine for long periods of time and the fact that the DPF filter makes the engine run hotter that combination makes the engine overheat.

Undo the top link when hogging. Makes for a much smother ride and better cut since the deck floats.
@lightning7582

Cut a little slower, adjust the bucket back and lower about 15 inches off the ground and make sure you're tail wheel is adjusted so its rolling along the ground. Not spinning on top. Top link should be approximately 45 degrees so the mower floats with the terrain.

I find it rides better wearing the seat belt. Keeps me from being jostled around so much. I have a pasture with thick grass. My 60” drive over mower bogs down the tractor. I’m thinking about a 48” bush hog. I’m hoping being able to cut higher than 5” won’t be too hard on the tractor. What’s your thoughts? Flail mower better? Best low cost brand of both types??

I love winter but seeing this video from October makes me want it to end soon. I fire up the tractor and let her heat up for 30 minutes and do whatever small job I can every few weeks but without even enough snow this year to use it for the driveway I'm getting the itch. On the plus side my wife tore up the grass something horrible in the mud a few weeks back so I'll have some nice grading to do in spring to fix the deep ruts. :)

I had that problem of the radiator screen filling up really bad with my little 16 HP Ford 1210. The 30 HP Cub Cadet tractor still had that issue but to a lesser extent, my current 55 HP New Holland hardly ever has that issue. I only have to clean that screen once a month or so. I guess it's a height thing. The taller tractor rides over the weeds more. I also don't get the weeds blown back into my face as much. The larger tires have more give and allow me to really boogie when mowing. So yeah, a bigger tractor definitely works better for bush hogging. However, the little tractor with the backhoe is much more useful for other tasks where my big tractor just won't fit, or have room to turn around.

I think all of us study study before taking the plunge and buying so I guess it’s not so surprising that many of us think alike and come up with the same solutions for things. But I still about fell over when I saw the Metaltech scaffold and how you used it! I had seen the man who welded a beautiful rack for his implements but I have different implements and don’t have a welder, so I built a heavy spinning rack out of wood. I flip the loader up vertically with a hoist (looked at how JD shipped them when delivered) and it then faces the snow blower with the Cyclone Rake nestled between the arms and the Artillian fork sticking into the side of the base (which is a heavy pallet) but had no good solution for the bucket until seeing that scaffold at Home Depot. I had literally just told my wife I’d done the measurements and was going to buy it this weekend and there was yours! On another subject, I finally had to call the Indiana Department of Safety Sally and report Katriel for those flip flops. They’re not at all happy so they’re going to issue her a citation entitling her to a TTWT discount with Redwing on a pair of steel toed boots with shanks! 🤣 Much safer when helping you AND I’m sure they will go over well at college....

Wonder if the exhaust blows some of that up towards the radiator. I’ve thought about adding a mod to point the exhaust out to the side. It always leaves a black coating on the grille guard.

I have had such a mod. I took it off...now thinking about putting it back on. If I do put it back on, I will make a video.

Great video as usual Tim I don't think Johnny dislikes those kind of jobs as much as its the operator of Johnny that really doesn't like that kind o job but I can't blame you we have the same problems cutting in those conditions with our commercial mowers with 60" and 72" decks. He is a very interesting guy seems like the kind of guy I could sit and talk with for hours just listening and learning from. I wonder what osha would have to say about Katriel's attire LOL Flip Flop Farmer I think should be her new nickname. LOL Hope the Family is doing well and Christy's foot is healing well. Have a great day!!! God Bless

I always enjoy your vids, thank you. While driving through tall weeds, Tractor Mike has a good idea - and it works for me. Search RU-vid for "A Tip for Keeping Your Tractor Radiator from Clogging". Keep your bucket above the weed heads, so the weeds don't snap back and clog your radiator screen. The front of your tractor, will push the weeds down - instead of snapping back from the bucket.

Fascinating. Read the comments to our ‘Mowing a Jungle’ video. Everyone there was in a tizzy because I didn’t have the loader on, saying that the loader would take the weeds down ahead of the tractor, and would help. So, neither way works

My 1025R beats me to death when I'm running the bush hog too. I have to go pretty slow to make it bearable. How many attachments do you have for Johnny? I only have the box blade and bush hog. I'm thinking of getting a fence post auger. Love y'alls videos please keep them coming.

Just a tip I saw some shots where your daughter was close to the backside of the brush hog. I know when I’ve been brush hogging sometimes I’ve seen that thing kick out Spears that defiantly would of probably killed someone standing within 40ft

This year in the southern tier of NY it was very dry and dusty. Into the wind managed to keep the dust cloud away. With the wind was riding with a snowball effect dust cloud. Stopping every thirty feet would let the dust ball blow ahead and out of the way! But stopping? It violates the "full speed ahead" method! Guess I'm happy my Massey GC2610 having radiator suction at the operator station. Cleaning chaff has been a hour and a half without really heavy build up even then. Our little tire tractors ride pretty rough in fields don't they?

Does the Quick Hitch cause any problems with the mower? And if the drive shaft has already been cut to use without a QH, will I have to buy a longer driveshaft section?
