It is so crazy, I am 53 years old and grew up with the same as you, USA is everything better and bigger, but the real case is totally different. We Dutch are doing good, and with all the respect to the USA. We still listen to their music, watch their movies and watch a lot across the ocean how the States are doing. The only thing, if we want to use something that seems better in the States that we want to use, we first improve it...

It’s not the pidgeons and rats that are disgusting, but the *people* who make the mess that attracts them in such numbers in the first place. Pidgeons are in fact no dirtier than *any* birds. The problem is that we build our cities in ways that are a perfect substitute for the natural roosts that they prefer, and then we proceed to dump food waste everywhere. If you want to clean up a pidgeon problem, the best and most effective way by far is to clean up the *people* problem first.
@dl4608
@dl4608 2 года назад
You’re NOT *dependent* on walking…you CAN walk. Liveability is a thing here, and it means that neighbourhoods are designed for people, rather than being designed for cars. In America, you have no choice but to own a car because it’s the only viable option to access even the most basic of daily essential services and activities. Entire neighbourhoods without local shops, or footpaths, or bike infrastructure, or bus/rail services, etc, force you to own a car or be housebound. In the Netherlands, it’s possible to live even in the countryside and still access regular bus services that make it possible to commute *without* a car almost door to door to a job in any city. And there are shops that cater to at least the daily essentials that are in easy walking distances of almost everywhere as well (or that are most just a short bike/bus ride). I don’t even own a car since I moved here because I simply don’t need one, and I don’t even live in the same city in which I work - and even when I was living in a village and working in Amsterdam, I still didn’t need a car! Liveability ftw 👌

In some places you need a card to open the container and the city will bill you. But this causes a lot of people to dump their garbage everywhere (remember, we are cheap). In Amsterdam we don’t need a card. We all pay a yearly tax, based on the size of your family. But they only use the one person household fee or the more than one household fee. And something that you may not have noticed. When the truck pulls out a container, a special cover closes the hole in the ground to prevent people from falling in. Just some simple metal plates with springs. My Amsterdam supermarket is only a 5 minute walk from my house (center of Amsterdam) and I pass 3 garbage containers on that trip. So, yes, they are everywhere.
@Bianca_Toeps
@Bianca_Toeps 2 года назад
In Zaandam we needed a card, but it didn't cost us anything. We just had to apply at the municipality to get the card. I think to prevent others from dumping their trash in our container?
@a.j.haverkamp4023
@a.j.haverkamp4023 2 года назад
@@Bianca_Toeps Yes, the card shows that you have paid your tax. I bet it triggers an alarm when you share the card (or use it for a restaurant for example) and it shows that you produce excessive garbage. The card and readers etc do cost a lot to maintain, so doing it without a card could be cheaper in the long run.

About 15 years ago the city I live in (Almere, near Amsterdam) took 'no garbage day' to a new level for people living in the main shopping center (like me :-)). We were the first in The Netherlands to implement a Scandinavian system which is a sort of vacuum cleaner. We have these underground containers embedded in apartment buildings where we drop the garbage bag. On specific times and when the container is full enough, the container's bottom flips open and all the garbage bags fall into this tunnel system which then uses air to move all the garbage bags to a specific building which we simply call the vacuum cleaner. So we not only do not have a garbage day, we also do not have garbage trucks collecting garbage in the neighbourhood. Garbage trucks only need to go to that vacuum cleaner building. The trash cans in the shopping area are also connected to this system. A few years ago the city of Arnhem was the 2nd city in The Netherlands to implement this system but only for public trash cans and not for households. Amsterdam is also looking into implementing this system for several neighbourhoods. It's ideal: no trash containers to carry, no garbage trucks making noise, no pollution due to transport using air and the best of all: when the container is full, come back in an hour or less and it has been emptied. :-)

Over where I live in the Netherlands we do still have the plastic containers, we actually have quite a few of them, I believe there's 4 total now? I'm not sure. I love in an apartment, which means that I don't have those containers seeing as I don't have space to put them anywhere. This also means that I do have access to the underground containers. In this case they do require a card in order to open them up, which is done in order to ensure that people who have plastic containers, and people from other neighborhoods don't randomly throw their trash into the containers we have to use in order to get rid of our trash. Aside from that, we have recently been introduced to shared underground containers at places like supermarkets and what not. Anyone can go there in order to get rid of their trash. These containers do work like the ones that were shown in the video, and don't requre a card to open. I don't quite remember the reason for placing them, I think it had something to do with the changes in the collection dates or whatever, but again, I live in an apartment and these rules don't apply to me, so I never really looked into it much. It did lead to a lot of trash on the ground at first, people saw these public containers as a perfect way to get rid of anything they didn't need in their own household, like old plates, kitchen chairs, mattresses, etc. So we needed a couple of cameras in order to ensure that this wouldn't happen again. The problem is solved for the most part now.

I live in the suburbs and here the garbage is picked up once a week (and once a month for paper). But if I drive or ride to the nearest by supermarket (10 minutes walk) there are these underground garbage bins for clothes and bottles. However, the apartment buildings in my neighborhood have these underground garbage bins for normal garbage and organic waste, these have locks because they are only intended for the apartment dwellers (as they don’t have space to have large wheel bins in their garden, like we have).

I still have containers, but a 'walker' put the containers side by side in pairs of two and the truck automatically grabs them, empties them, and puts them back at the side of the walkway. No hard work and relatively clean. So two people can do the collecting of private containers.

This is actually very useful. We use a small green container for our food recyclings. Small as a about a feet wide, high and half that size in depth. Those recyclings are free. Same with clean plastic wrappers and stuff, but you've got to pay for every time you throw a normal bag out. So you're sorting for sure. I live in te Netherlands and a lot of what they guy said is true. Most of the times, the Ikea fridges built into kitchens can only take a week's worth of food and we like it because that means our food is fresh. Coming from South Africa, we had to get used to this as in SA, we also were used to buying in bulk. The bins I find really nice over here. I do find it sometimes that the bins can become full, but if that is the case, I wait for them to be emptied and then I go throw my boxes and stuff away then, simple. Our municipality gave residence access cards to the bins. They will fine you if you overuse the bins because they want less waste per household. They also tend to fine people who leave their boxes outside of the garbage bins (the ones with their delivery address still on the box 😆).

9:00 It depend on the city. In my city I need to use a pass to 'unlock' a disposal bin, and I'm not charged anything for it. My colleague who lives in a different town, also need to use a pass, but he get's charged for every time he deposits something. There was also a time these bins could weigh your trash, and charge you accordingly... but I believe that was quickly phased out due to backlash.

This is so funny to hear from an outsider! I remember when those underground containers were introduced in the small city where I grew up. My parents were like 'i am not going to walk with my garbage are they nuts?!' before they had just containers right outside the house and you could easily take the containers and roll them to the streets. No pass you could loose and wait days to get a new one so you can dump your garbage. Now I am using those underground containers for years sometimes it is a few minutes walk which can be frustrating. In the city where I live you pay through tax and you have a certain limit, if you exceed the limit you have to pay extra. In some cities its by weight others by how often you throw something away.. so it depens. But I really forgetfull so I don't have to remember to set my garbage outside unless it is plastic. They collect here all plastics one day a week. Sometimes I forget it, but luckily plastic doesn't smell or produce fruit fly's. I really hate those flys, they are a plague.

They solved it that kids can not open is you just need a pass now which you get for free which you need to open the underground container
@dawatcherz
@dawatcherz 3 месяца назад
that's not the standard. most do not need a pass. parents just tell their kids not to climb into one and when some dumb kid does it anyway it is big news so all the other kids learn from that dumb kid's mistake.

Oh my the stroads that you guys have in the States. We have two different types of "roads". The roads are mainly for traffic, but the 'streets' are for living. I actually find your streets quite unsafe.

the last few days people have been funny and put in a speaker that made baby noises. like I said in the other video that they found a baby in it once or twice(alive) maybe your reaction video triggered those people putting in a speaker :P fortnight is 2 weeks.

There are some that open to anyone. Others just have a keycard, so that other people that don't live in that neighbourhood can't throw their trash in there. with the result of overflowing to soon. And there are also ones that have a keycard and a chip that keeps track of your garabage for the bill. Everywhere is different, depending on what the municipal likes as a system or can afford.

Ok, this just popped into my feed a d tried to see if anyone answered you yet about the fortnite or fortnightly, that means in every 2weeks and it comes from the fact that 2 weeks is exactly fourteen nights, hence fortnight.

forthnight/ two weeks I shop every day for food, even for some other things. right covid, what do I see on the street mask mask and more mask. We have rats and rats and more rats. dang Apollo 11 i was a kid then. okay Here in the Netherlands some stores are around the corner, some are around two miles or three, there are always supermarkets like Aldi, Jumbo Albert Hein, plus, near you. we have also a store like C&A for clothing, in my city you will go nuts about clothing stores. 19% tax and stores like drieres, washing machine`s and more electronics`s. some may forget that most of the things are made in the Netherlands like WIFI and bluetooth ItsCharlieVest.

There are 3 problems with underground containers in my eyes. It's more expensive. Many if not most places require you to scan a card that will charge you for every use instead of a fixed fee. (We actually had one that charged double for several years before someone found out.) The second is that there have been several cases of unwanted babies being tossed in these(hard to prove who did it unlike wheely bins that are marked with addresses). Recently we even had a d bag troll toss a bluetooth speaker in and played baby sounds to cost us taxpayers a s load of money in emergency services. Lastly, they are not that big(the opening) so while a small bag like he showed will fill it up to 75%, you can forget about getting a large gray bag in there. Unless you want to stuff it in and risk it getting stuck, pulled back out by the next person and then get a note from Handhaving(like unarmed police but employed by the city and with less powers, they also function as metermaids so you can compare them with that) that you will receive a 100+ Euro fine for leaving trash outside of the container(personal experience)... But then again, they are easy and close by(In my street there is one every 50m or so). So basically you pay for the extra convenience.
@dohtje5029
@dohtje5029 2 года назад
Really? The openings from our containers can easily hold a Komo thrashbag filled to the brim, and our card scanner doesn't charge extra, just basic waste tax. (gemeente Haarlem)
@david6054
@david6054 2 года назад
@@dohtje5029 Not going to say what city I am from(I like my privacy) but here unfortunately that is true. Spring cleaning can get expensive that way :p (I will say that it's not like you are charged 10 Euro per use, maybe one or two.) And if I want to bring regular household trash to the dump I pay per Kg(which is often cheaper) But it's good to see other placed have their affairs more in order.
@nkesimaat
@nkesimaat 2 года назад
@@david6054 I'm also not gonna say what city I'm from. But not only do we not pay extra for the underground bin. We also don't pay extra for our local dump. The same card we use for the underground bin, we can use to enter there. Free of charge. But they are real sticklers when it comes to sorting everything. So that can cost you some time upfront.
@david6054
@david6054 2 года назад
@@nkesimaat That's actually nice to hear. Glad it's not a national problem. We do pay for the dump but only several items such as household waste and certain types of non recyclable items.
