Gibson does not get the neck angle right. Fixed Bridges | How to set up a Tune - o - Matic
In this one I show very pretty guitars and different types of Fixed Bridges : Tune - O - Matic, Wraparound ( top wrapping ), Telecaster, etc... I also speak about the variability and lack of consistency of Gibson Neck Angles and we learn how to check if a Tune - O - Matic is correctly set up.
And...No, Gibson does not get the neck angles right.

Hi Cesar, Excellent Video 👍👍👍. I am almost 50 yo and still learning things about Guitars, I don't think that you ever totally stop learning new things! I remember an old Luthier telling me many years ago that the Two Contact points on a Guitar are very important, the Nut and the Bridge. Like you mentioned the Tail Piece has to be the correct height on a Gibson Style Guitar so it does not touch the back of the Bridge or you will get what he called ghost harmonics. You have a Beautiful Collection, and they are obviously looked after very well!👍. Take care Brother ♥️👍. Melbourne, Australia.

Just a humble comment here... I opted to rise the stop tail piece to get like 5 to 7 degrees. What I got was less resistance when bending strings... Well it's just me. I don't go all the way down with the stop tail piece as it has adjustment. It worked for me... And everyone can set up it's preferences. By the way, that Les Paul is amazing as well the PRS and your Yamaha... Great guitars. Thanks for your video and teaching, un abrazo !

Hi Antonio! There is no right or wrong here. The point I wanted to convey is that there is a lot of variability in neck angles at Gibson. That I think it is a miss on their side, as I see much more consistency in other manufacturers. Personally I try to get as close as I can to the body with my stopbars. But as I say in the video, I do not think it has any effect in sustain and tone. And of course, if it works for you is good for you! Cheers my friend!
@AntonioCavicchioni
@AntonioCavicchioni 4 года назад
@@CesarAllGuitar Thank you César! Totally agree... I just was curious why they allow the height of the tail piece variable. I found that (just for me) bending is softer (maybe it's my imagination) but that worked for me. Well the important things are two. First you brought this important item to the board, and second, those guitars of you are simply amazing...! Un abrazo!

Yes, you're right about neck angles on les pauls , I look for that too ,I went paul shopping with a friend who wants to buy a les paul 50's standard . We stopped in a guitar center that had 30 or 40 pauls on the wall.. and maybe 10 or so 50's neck profile.. we found two that had correct neck angles Meaning stop bar to the body and no string touching the back of the bridge. Just two out of maybe 10 or 12 of them .. Gibson is inconsistent on their neck angles . They seemed to have better fit and finish but fail in the neck department. Of course you can always top wrap but that's not the point. But one thing they should get right from the start. They say that's why the stop bar is adjustable.. to me, that is BS.... Step it up, Gibson Les pauls are great guitars when you find a good one . For the price they ask, they should get the angle right.. In my opinion...

Hi Cesar, dead right as usual!! I have 3 Lefty Gibsons - My 335 and my SG Standard both have to have the stop-bar raised and my Custom Shop Les Paul Class 5 only need slight adjustment. My PRS McCarty has a wrap-around bridge and it is perfect. I think a lot of the issues are caused by lack of attention to detail at the Gibson factory. Beautiful collection of guitars you have there my friend, enjoy them all in good health. Another great video

i realize i have never had a good relationshio with guitars which pickup and covers are in a slope (as seen in 16:54) should strings be completely parallel to the pickups on that sloped pickups?

What makes this worse, the neck angle isn’t consistent. I had a Classic that I didn’t have to raise the tailpiece on, while my current Gibson I have to. I don’t understand why you can’t get a longer screw since you are going to have to raise it.

Hello i have have Gibson 500t high output pickup in bridge position in my Esp Eclipse LP style guitar... What is your suggestion about height adjustment? At the momemt i set pickuo height about 2mm on treble side and 2.5mm on bass side. Maybe i shoud to go lower? I play with medium to high gain settings on amp and overdrive pedals. Thank you!
@CesarAllGuitar
@CesarAllGuitar 4 года назад
Gibson recommends 1/16" (1.6 mm) for the bridge pickup and 3/32" (2.4 mm) for the neck. My own preference is to start with 3/32" (2.4 mm) on the bass side and 1/16" (1.6 mm) on the treble side for both bridge and neck humbuckers. This is not my own comment but I agree totally with it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks again Cesar, for sharing. I didn't know that the variation in Gibsons are that much. The stop tailpiece on my Epiphone Les Paul is flush against the body, with string clearance like you've shown. Haha! Do you have a Gibson with a flush tailpiece and proper string clearance? Thanks for showing us those fixed bridges. Cheers!

I’m dealing with this right now. I’ve had a couple 2023 SG Standards from Sweetwater with either stress fractures at the nut and scratches all over or a cosmetically perfect one with a high neck angle which requires the tailpiece to be jacked up super high so the strings are floppy and wobble out of tune. I’m exchanging again. If this one doesn’t work out I’m giving up.

I agree on the quality of Yamaha guitars,- I mean PRS are "reassuringly expensive" so you would expect the feel and playability to be perfect, but all of the Yamaha guitars I've tried had a certain quality at a non exorbitant price. As for Gibson........ who can say! They are certainly iconic.

Yes it seems Gibson quality is somewhat hit and miss, however a typical cure for strings hitting the tunomatic bridge is a replacement set, keep the old ones for future sale, the Gibson tunomatic is pretty wide, you can get variations with a much thinner base and higher bridge guides, which instantly cure this problem, or the old way is wrapping the strings over the stop tail, which I must says does change the guitar completely for the better, the lower break angle adds tons of sustain etc, that my experience with Gibsons, kinda always makes me wonder how they can vary so much and a issue like this still go on for so many years.

There is a WORSE scenario. .. I had an epiphone ES335 - The neck angle was so wrong, I couldn't get the bridge low enough to get the action how I wanted it (1.8mm at octave) . If you have this issue , you're fucked 😞

Bridge and tail piece height to me has a huge impact on playability. I like them low with medium action on the fingerboard. Ive tried hundreds of LPs and only 1 passed the test. I have say that Gibson ARE consistent... At not getting the neck angle right. 🤣

String-through body Hipshot/Gotoh/Gibraltar bridges simply work and are easy to set up and restring. Tune-O-Matics are a mess. I don't understand even why they still exist.
@musicproductionvideos5019

If it doesn't affect the sound , tone or sustain... why does it matter if they are not consistent?

See..this is a good question. Sometimes the neck angle in Gibsons make the guitar very difficult to set up. Specially the models from 2016, 17, 18 and 19 in my opinion. In some of them, the height you need at the stop tail piece in order for the strings to not to hit the back of the tune-o-matic makes the guitar very uncomfortable to play. I guess it talks more about lack of Quality Control parameters. Look for example across al my prs’ s- the neck angle is exactly the same. Thanks for watching!
@CesarAllGuitar
@CesarAllGuitar Год назад
Sorry - I forgot to mention the intonation specifically when I said “ difficult to set up properly”. In my experience, some of the stop tail pieces/ tune - o - matics have to be adjusted with a height that makes really difficult to properly intonate the guitar….

The neck angle of Gibson guitars is such a joke. I see the same proplems every time when I have a chance to explore a selection of properly se up Les Pauls. All of them have their Tune-o-matics at different height and many of them are running of out the intonation adjustment range. This is due to the inconsistency of their production.
