I chopped 12 inches off my hair recently but before that I used to do this all the time! You did such a great job explaining what to actually do I never could when I tried to tell my friends but I’ll send them this video to explain!
Oh my gosh I used to work at a nursing home that had an Indian resident there with dementia, she would always do this with her hair so effortlessly and I'd always try to remember what she did but never could This is so genius!
Note: For thick hair, try not to wrap your hair too tight around your finger/hand. Also, you can do two bun instead or until you get used to doing it. Most, if not all, Indian learn to tie their hair this way. When I straighten my hair, it won't stay in a bun, so I put on a hair band after tucking in the tail end &/or a decorative mini claw clip at the tail end to secure the hair in place. This way the bun will definitely last longer.
@@-KawaiiKitty- Tho maybe true, when hair is overprocessed or too much heat applied for styling, it's been described as 'fried'. It's like a metaphor. Fabric is frayed.
I used to do this when I was an archaeologist. Six weeks in the middle of flipping nowhere and minimal personal care (if someone was on their period they got first shower dibs so it was often the case I washed in sun-heated water from a local stream stored in a plastic tank) meant no matter how many elastics I had, I could never find one when I needed if. I didn't even learn it from anywhere, it just made sense to me to tie my hair in a knot of some form!
Honestly, loose buns can feel way more painful than very secure buns, like this. When the hair is loose, it kind of bobs around a lot and ends up pulling on the hair with more force (especially with mine, since it's over 3 ft long and pretty thick). Love styles like this!
I agree. I don't know how long my hair actually is but it goes to my waist and even though it's not the healthiest I always have to have my buns tight or it doesn't work.
I’m also someone with thick hair over 3ft long(measuring down my thighs now), I agree snug is get than loose, but it’s not as easy for me to do a bun like this cause I have too much length for it…ima still try though
@@djamila_nova Oh trust nothing special 😂 It would happen in my workplaces where the ladies would catch me flipping it into a bun when I'm 5 cups of caffeine in
Thx. My hair is in a ponytail and 2 braids and I tried and still worked even with my hair in braids already which makes me even happier is a good bun made of braids I have to keep my hair in braids or it's not eligible for a brush at the end of the week. I prefer no elastics and a updo for a week and to reset my hair each day. This is perfect. I was using combs with elastics between them and that does ok but this is way better.
This took me so long to figure out but I love it!!! 😍 I have such a long hair and sometimes it’s annoying to have it down. And I sometimes forget my hair tie. Thanks!! Love this
Those of you with super-thick hair, maybe you could divide your hair into 2-3 ponytails and make 2-3 buns. Either in a row across the nape of your neck, or in a line down the back of your head.
I have long hair like 80 to 90cm or so so i rarely find any hairstyles for buns or so. I just need a way to do a bun so if i go into the water in summer, my hair doesn't get wet. I tried this and honestly, usually, no tutorials work for my hair. But i was so surprised that it worked and is also really stable. Additionally, it really doesn't hurt your head. Thanks❤
Tried it immediately and it works so well! I usually tie my hair in a regular knot and it falls out fairly quick. You just taught me a better way. Thanks!
Wow I am amazed now I know how to put my hair up when I lose my hair tie when I'm out which always seems to happen somehow because I do not like it on my wrist at all! Because I have carpel tunnel I can't keep rubber bands on my wrist😅. Thank you so much tho! 🫶🏽 even my husband tripped out that it stays! Because he always helps me comb my long hair after my arms get tired or he'll just brush it completely❤❤ love him!!
I have a hairtype similar to you and I swear this hack works like a charm. i always struggled to make a perfect bun that would hold on for a longer period of time and finally found it. Thanks a lot❤️❤️❤️
Won’t work for my hair bc it’s thick and curly but you did such a PHENOMENAL JOB explaining it that I actually understand how to do it, so well done! So many hair tutorials I have to watch over and over just to learn one or two steps, but you made this really easy to understand.
my hair is down to my knees too! I would love to try this style, what do you do with all the length though? Do you do the twist grab pull like shown here and just have a super long tail that you pull through and wrap around the bun multiple times and then tuck in, or do you do something different to deal with all the extra length?
@@Saphindra Yeah that's what I did! 😄 Just twist the rest of the length, wrap around and tuck the tail in 😁 Such a relief to my neck and it's not pulling on the front of my hairline like with elastics and clips 💓
@@Deebnoff This is what I really needed to know, so I am so glad you shared! Sure, this is for women, but I have long hair, and in need of some way to put it back without it being so stressed. As it is, those elastic things just seem to eat at my hair like a vicious little pac man or something, from all that pulling. This seems like a great alternative.
Finally, after all these years, I finally found something that could actually hold my hair, although I had to twist the remaining around the bun twice so that I could tuck the tail. But I am so grateful to you for this trick. Thanku so much❤❤
I have 27 inches of hair, and I have been using this technique for a year now. I was looking for a bun hairstyle that kept ALL my hair up without needing 1000 hair pins, and I ended up finding this hairstyle here on RU-vid shorts. It seems to actually be a pretty common hairstyle within Indian communities, and that's where I initially learned the hairstyle from. I will forever be grateful for their genius ❤️❤️
This is now my favorite way of doing a bun and this is the perfect thing to do when you are hot and don’t have a hair tie I will now do this every time it works so well I ❤ it
Not sure if it's good or bad but I have so fine silky straight hair that not even hair needles can keep my hair up. Either you need super tight elastics and/or tons of hair spray but even in the latter case all may detangle earlier or later. I used to hate my hair for it. But after hearing from other people how they adored the softness and silkiness of my hair, I started to see the good sides of my hair and am at peace with it now.
You could use some texturizing or sea salt spray in your hair if you want to do this style. Also will work better on hair that isnt freshly washed. It just needs some traction
@@bbbean Well, thanks but I just cut it short. I need to wash my hair in the morning because if I sleep with freshly washed hair, I look like an exploded pillow the next morning. And short hair is so easy to dry. Also the high humidity for like 4 months doesn't really go well with long hair but it's okay ish with a short haircut. And when I had hair long enough to probably do that style, my hair worked like a warm silk scarf. And each morning my neck and hair was soaked in sweat. I tried braiding for a while to keep it out of my neck at night but you're busy when you work and have small kids. Not to mention unwanted weird waves each morning. So short hair works best for me.
found someone like me here 😭✨ It's sad that I can't do much with my hair except braids 😂 plus mine is thick and long and so damn stubborn to prove that it's straight
@Est.4_14 what a waste of time this comment of yours is. Sure itd be great if everyone had freedom to do what they want but due to colonisation and white supremacy, the voices, discoveries, traditions, history and many other things from non white countries are silenced. Or not given importance. This makes it quite easy for white people to steal or seem like they were the only persons to discover something that has been done by many people of colour for many years. Its an unfair system and calling it out is not spreading hate or gatekeeping but in fact bringing attention to ignorance and history of non western countries/cultures. People should be allowed to respectfully try all kinds of things from other cultures or add it into their life. But its shitty when white people or people who have more power and privileges (such as big celebrities, big companies, those that have generational wealth and etc) take things away from others and claim it as theirs. Many artists have also stolen from lesser known ones in the same way, making it seem as though it was their own original idea or never done before, even if it had been. Unintentionally or not, claiming it as their own original idea without research or acknowledgement of people who regularly do this, is shitty at least in my eyes.
When my hair was long, I used to tie it up with a lock of my hair. I'd take the majority in a ponytail, just excluding a tiny lock from somewhere in the back. Id twist it in a snail bun and then use the spare lock to tie it going in the opposite direction of the bun. I could workout, run, dance, etc and it wouldn't fall.
This only works with certain types of hair. Nothing will hold with my hair. Unless I secure with a thick hairtie for a bunch of hours. After that, remove the hairtie and it will stay. I had 2 knot buns similar to that in high school. For those with slippery hair, that's how you do it.
when my hair was down to my butt to my knees, i would wrap my hair the same as one for a bun with a hairtie, but i eventualy figured out that i couldn't tie with a hairtie anymore and it stayed in better just wrapping it till the ends dissaperead, my ends were really thin
This doesn’t work with all hair types. Think, silky hair won’t stay like that. I can wrap my hair around itself and it stays in a bun, so my surprise when I braided the hair of someone with silky hair for the first time was immense- it’s so slippery 😂
Thank you for explaining this. I have really fine, really straight hair, and, even though it's really long, these tutorials never work for me. I always thought I was really bad at doing hair, but I guess it's just my hair type!
Thick hair really eats up length when doing styles. I have extremely long hair and still can't do some of the styles people with shorter hair do because so much of it is used up going around itself.
@@Ariri95 It also get's stuck like that lol. I would never dare try it. If i left it in for more than a couple hours it would absolutely get stuck together and I'd have to literally rip it back apart
This is me , I have extremely straight hair so this won't work. My mum , who has wavy hair, does this all the time. I tried to as a kid but failed haha
This is basically how my mom taught me to put my hair up into a bun! I remember the girlies were shocked in HS P.E. 😆 at the time, I thought everyone just did their buns like this!
When my hair was long I figured out how to do this and it was amazing!! After I cut my hair I tried to do it and it was too short haha maybe I can do it again soon when it grows out more
I have long hair that REFUSES to get into a comfortable bun so I always wear a ponytail (literally 12 hours a day every day, which is HORRIBLE for your roots but it became a bad habit) so I am gonna try this!
This only works if you have 'fried' hair (as you pointed it out yourself lol) so if you have healthy hair no matter how long your hair is it won't stay . (:
She's right. I have very long hair. I do this when I haven't had a haircut in awhile and it works. after I get one it loosens and won't stay bc the ends are fresh again.
It doesn't have to be fried, just needs a bit of texture. Straight/flat hair can't hold these types of knots. You might be able to form a bun and run something like a pen through it, but even that might require a bit of texture.
Oh my lord I watched you so much when I was little and I instantly recognized you. You're a big part of my childhood and seeing you pass by now really makes me feel good 🥹
Super fine straight hair said, "No, I don't think I will." I just don't have the density for it to hold together. However, any pencil or pen will do if I have nothing else. Somehow figured out how to put my hair up using a pencil when I was about 10 and I love using hair sticks, especially in the summer. I've done something similar to this, but use a hair fork, and even then it's a 50/50 shot whether or not it will hold.
Yeah, my hair is two feet long and its super fine and flat. When i tried it, it held until i shook my head a little. 😞 thought i found something that would work.
Thats so interesting. My hair is 3 feet long and the hairs are fine and sleek but I have a looooot it's very thick and my hair is too thick to do this. She must have a specific length (shorter than to her butt lol) and density to her hair to achieve this.
@@elizabethstanley6701 Yah, my hair tends to form more of a knob than a bun when I twist it up. Granted, it's always wanted to revert to its default state, so it takes either a tool like scrunchies or sticks, or an entire can of hair spray to get it to stay otherwise.
I can do this, usually higher up on my head, but for the life of me I can't do the pen or pencil trick. How do yall do it!? (I'm dead serious, not kidding, how do yall do it)
@@animelover69 I know a couple ways. The way I taught myself is to hold your hair like you're making a ponytail, put the stick underneath, wrap the hair around it once (or twice depending on how long), then twist the stick until tight and tuck the pointy end of the stick against your scalp. The second way is to twist your hair and wrap it into a bun, then insert the pointy end of one stick at the bottom side of the bun and go up diagonally until it's sticking out a little bit. Then flip the stick so the pointy end goes back under the bun and shove it the rest of the way in. If you like two sticks (and I do), just add the second for stability. I use longer sticks (9" or so), but some people use shorter ones. I also find it stays more tightly if done when your hair is wet. It doesn't really dry inside, but I live in a dry place and that hasn't been a problem for me.
Thanks to you❤ I was finally able to make a proper bun. All these days I thought my hair was not suitable for this type of bun😂 but after trying by watching ur video I realised that I didn’t know how to make it😅 and it’s not my hair’s fault 😂
