That was just sick. I've been a musician since 1977, and I've never seen anyone utterly dominate any instrument the way Stevie does a guitar. He's the GOAT for sure, IMO. Anyone who can man-handle 12-13 gauge strings better than regular players handle 8's and shred a classic song behind his back AND with one hand with ease is beyond human. Thanks for posting.
Forgot to mention he played 13 guage strings and broke them frequently. SRV never plays the same song exactly the same each time. The SRV crowd seems split as to this version and the Austin 1989 version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wgIB1OL09H0.html . If you react it, I'm curious as to which version you prefer?
He didn't give the guitar away, he handed it to one of his Tech's. That guitar is named Number 1 and it was his go-to guitar, he had 4 or 5 stage guitars that are now with his brother Jimmie. You want to see some guitar playing? Watch Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan Pipeline. Masters at work!
I love Stevie Ray. There is a short documentary on his guitars on RU-vid. He went to a guitar store repeatedly and looked at the guitar he calls number 1 before he was able to buy it. It originally belonged to Christopher Cross and SRV bought it for $350. After his death, it sold at auction for over $650,000.
It doesn’t get better than SRV, I don’t care who’s trying. I saw an interview with Eric Clapton not long after Stevie’s death and he told a story of them being backstage warming up and Eric wanted to check out his guitar so they traded and he said he couldn’t even play Stevie’s guitar because of the way he had it set up and he looked over and Stevie was wailing on his! That’s saying something. Stevie had a big peacock tattooed on his chest and after his death, I got one on my arm as my own personal memorial to him.
Yeah. He bought the 'one' at a pawnshop for like $75 or something crazy like that. Added thoss Texas pickups used heavy 9 and 10 tnt boomer strings that most couldn't bend. That's where the sound is at. He tuned down a half of a step to be able to bend whole notes at a time. People can play faster, shred, but ringing out pure soul no one comes close. Hendrix was raw this is refined and pure
Thanks for taking me up on my recommendation. I knew you'd appreciate that performance. "Texas Flood" live at el mocambo should be next and he plays more behind his back. The rabbit hole is deep here. Any thing from his Austin concert in 1989 is stellar, but you can't go wrong with any of his live performances. Actually don't let his attire sway you, he was actually quite humble. Once the SRV reaction followers find you, they'll have much more to educate you about him and his struggles until the helicopter crash that took his life.
@@TurnTheDialTV Pat yourself on the back for finally listening. I must say, the look on your face was priceless. Enjoy your new journey. I'm checking in from New Orleans and we pronounce the Feaux as Fo.
Moe Feaux 100% everything from the concert if mind blowing! “Texas Flood”, “Little Wing” and “Lenny” from El Mocambo!! Always react to SRV live! You will not be disappointed!
I saw him live shortly after his first album came out, before he was superstar famous. I knew nothing about him, hadn't even heard a song of his, only knew he was supposed to be good. I was floored, devastated, could barely believe my ears and eyes, it was like an enlightenment. I bought my first guitar the next day.
I seen SRV and Double Trouble in Los Angeles I think it was back in 83 . I was so blown away by him . One of the best concerts I ever attended for sure
@EvilHero Not in a million years. So a little more speed and consistency is more important than Jimi's superior songwriting, improvisation and versatility. I think not!
Yes mate glad to see a fellow younger brit finding SRV! I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of SRV reactions so a few you should definitely do are - Texas Flood live from the El Mocambo Little Wing live from the El Mocambo Lenny from the El Mocambo Dirty pool live at Montreux Riviera Paradise live from austin tx
Welcome to the greatest to ever throw a guitar over his shoulder. A freaking wizard!!!! There is a reason every great blue artist of the day wanted to collaborate with him. And now you get it
I saw SRV who opened for Ray Charles in Seattle Festival for $7! Didn't know who Stevie was but OMG, we were drenched in sweat after his set, Ray Charles danced in the wings half of his set. Unbelievable experience! 💞✌🎸
I saw SRV and Double Trouble in 1984 in Austin Tx. It was life changing. You can't take your eyes off of him. You got to check out "Little Sister" with SRV and Johnny Copeland. It will blow your mind!
The pedal that SRV is using in this song was actually Jimmy Hendrix and SRV asked his Father if he could use it to do this song with and according to what I've read Jimmy's father gave it to him .
You can check out many biography videos on Stevie Ray Vaughan on You Tube Channels. Theirs a statue of Stevie Ray in my ( and his ) hometown of Austin, Texas. Antone's Blues Club is still here. A place where Stevie would play there often. His older brother, Jimmy Vaughan still plays there often.
Just take a moment to realize the incredible strength in his left hand to hold the guitar away from his body while still running up and down the neck when he was playing behind his back.
Just a funny note on #1 guitar. There are dozens of reactions that mention the initials. Most think they are inlays, or rhinestones, etc. In truth, they are the reflective letters you'd find on a mailbox post in front of your house. Like $1.50 each. Haven seen him in person a couple of times growing up in Texas, Stevie didn't have a pretentious bone in his body from a personality standpoint. When he hung a guitar around his neck he was 10' tall and bulletproof.
great reaction, his last Gig in 1990 , back stage Clapton called him the best, and Clapton seen Jimi live to so you gotta know that made him feel good lol
Saw him in Louisville in 1989 with Jeff Beck. Beck came out for an encore and motioned to his ear for Stevie to turn his amp down. Stevie just smiled and shook his head "no".
We were guitar loving heavy in 70's and 80's. We loved all the great old black blues players that the young white (especially English) revered. The young white blues players brought out their revered idols. Look at Eric with BB and his adoration of Robert Johnson. I saw Stevie Jimi Eric all of them and BB Albert and Ice Pick too!!!!
Yes Stevie loved Strats. He also played 13 's starting on the high e. That guitar he called number 1. The man turned a whole generation onto blues in the eighties and was Buddy Guys favorite player . Buddy in his shows today still talks about Stevie. Btw , he died in a helicopter crash leaving Alpine Valley , Wisconsin on a foggy night where he performed with Eric Clapton , Buddy Guy , his brother and others. Stevie got on one of Eric's copters with EC's bodyguard and slammed into a ski slope RIP.
Watch Texas Flood live at El Macambo and you will know he is the GOAT!!! Tin Pan Alley live 8n Japan or Aint Gon Give Up on Love live at Capitol Theatre... He was a very kind and humble man...watch the many interviews with him on Utube!!
He's from my State of Texas. His style is his own but it is taken from our Tejano heritage. In a German concert he had on a Mexican Matador ensemble and most of the time he is wearing boots and always some kind of cowboy hat.
You been looking for some more Stevie Ray Vaughan I found a real good one it's I'm leaving you and how it's the cover Howlin Wolf did it in 1958 man Stevie Ray is that cat is wildin out on that you got to fly there if you can whenever you get the time I love your show I just love it thank you so much for your time and it's like you for your show SRV R i p Dallas girl
Hey thanks for commenting, I’ve noticed you, you comment a lot, what would you like me to watch, comment on my new vid and I will put it on my list 🤟😊😊
Hey man, always love watching Stevie with people who recently discovered him. If you want to be blown away: Texas flood - el mocambo So excited - el mocambo Lenny - el mocambo Pride and joy - el mocambo Have fun 🤘
Stevie wrote this original song as a tribute too his great friend Charley Wirz, of Charley's Guitars in Dallas, when Charley passed away. Charley made the guitar Stevie is playing in this video. Also, Stevie's favorite key is E flat. (I took lessons with the great Ken Wheeler at the shop. Also bought a Les Paul there.)
Those ain't diamond encrusted letters. They're hardware store, reflective letters that you would put on a mail box (the thing that your post is dropped into) in your front yard (garden to you, I guess). That's why it's so cool. They cost about a Euro for all three. LOL That guitar is called Number One. He got it at a Pawn Shop (sorry, don't know what you guys call them, but it's a place where you use tools and instruments and jewelry as collateral for small, short term loans). The guy running the shop didn't want to take Stevie"s trade in because it would be unfair to Stevie. His guitar was much better, but Stevie said that guitar just felt right and he wanted it, AND he was right AF!
SRV for me is the GOAT--nobody else could touch his style of play. Interesting story-he died because he was given the last seat on the helicopter that was supposed to also have his brother Jimmie’s wife and Jimmie, who played with him at the concert at Alpine Valley that night. Stevie didn’t want to wait for a later helicopter and it was a 91 mile trip back to Chicago by car/bus. It was said the pilot missed clearing the ski hill they crashed into by 60 feet.
Classic reaction to him got behind his back “ oh, cute, hes doing the behind the back thing” . then he start ripping back there like nothing….. “ oh shit!” With 13 gauge strings … i would have to sit down and summon all my strength tío ge through 10 seconds of that solo
I saw SRV 4 times. He was a monster. Check out Gary Moore covering Red House live.Moore was from Ireland. Another monster player. Live he played his guitar full out. Everything turned up to 10.
Stevie received his "Number One" when just a boy. The reflecto SRV decals are just what a boy does to his stuff! Try anything from SRV live at "EL Mocambo" (Texas Flood, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Lenny, etc.)
SRV was definitely a Strat man. I don't think I've ever seen footage of him playing any other kind of electric. Acoustically, there are several fiddles he's been seen playing.
I know this is old, however he did not have diamond encrusted letters on his guitar. It was simply what was popular back then called rainbow tape. Also I wish you people would get the name of the song correct, the name of the song is Voodoo Chile. It was a cover of the same Jimi Hendrix song who wrote it many many years before he covered it. However I will say he's the only person to do that song Justice. It's like he was channeling Jimi Hendrix into his guitar.
The MASTERFUL SRV playing behind his back, just like a walk in the park to him. I think it's laughable that Hendrix is compared to SRV and vice versa, Hendrix was never in Stevie's league! Nowhere near! All people say was Jimi was the original, he wrote and was the first to perform Voodoo Child and Littlewing, this is true and he WAS an amazing Musician...Then SRV took those Hendrix songs, played them, and made them so much better! SRV was also a brilliant Blues Vocalist, truth be known, Hendrix really couldn't sing at all. The pure skill/ talent of SRV will never be seen again...RIP Stevie The G.O.A.T x
Take a look at this legend facing a hostile croud at Montreaux! Playing "Dirty Pool"... My heart broke listening the boooos but, he delievered like a boss!!!
SRV is the GOAT. No doubt... but if there’s anyone who gives him a run for his money... It’s JOHNNY WINTER!!! One of the baddest m’er f’ers to ever pick up a guitar. He is also from Texas, Beaumont, to be precise, near the Louisiana/TX border. He played Woodstock. And absolutely crushed it there. When Hendrix would jam with Johnny, Jimi, would play the bass... 😐 That ought to tell ya something right there. He used to date Janis Joplin. Muddy Waters adopted him as his godson. He produced 3 Grammy Award winning albums for Muddy in return. At the age of 14, he convinced BB King to let him get on stage in an all black night club in East Texas during the early 60s. Where he proceeded to burn the house down. He and his brother are both insanely talented famous musicians. Here they are together doing Tobacco Road LIVE in 1970 in Holland. Oh, and the bass player is also the bass player for Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Shannon. Johnny is on guitar and Edgar is on vocals, keys and sax. And yes, they are both albinos! 😂🤘🏼 m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-af0rV6dli_o.html And here is Johnny going full blown delta blues god in front of nearly million hippies at Woodstock in ‘69 Mean town Blues m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kJSEZeNrKNM.html
Joe Bauers ah wicked that man class stories in their I’ve wrote those down they’re on my list with Stevie can’t wait to get them under my belt brother cheers for the suggestions 🙏
Must-see SRV vids: 1) Texas Flood at El Macambo 2) Life Without You at Capitol Theater 3) Ain't Gone and Give Up on Love at Capitol Theater 4) Tightrope at Austin City Limits 1989 5) Leave My Girl Alone at Austin City Limits 1989 Stevie Rave On 🎸🐐
HiddenInAHoodie Do man, I’ve been hooked on SRV for a good year now after not really paying too much attention when I was younger. An old work colleague of mine gave me a copy of the Texas Flood album and I remember enjoying it but was more interested in other artists at the time. I’ve watched all the legends on RU-vid, been to a lot of gigs and I can say without any doubt that this guy is just a class above anyone I’ve ever seen. Incredible!!
Number One was a used guitar that I believe he picked up at Charley's Guitar Shop about 20 miles from where I live. Charley did make him a custom, a white guitar that Stevie played during "Life Without You", appropriately enough.
I saw an interview where they said they used to get those letters from truck stops and just slap them on. Lol. He would have been so awesome to meet lol
Yah... not just a couple nots... entire lengthy solo behind his back!!! I seen him 5 times line... not this one, but... same thing... every time it sounded identicle... masterful!!
Definitely in my mind the greatest guitarist of all time! Check out his song "Little Sister". He does a good one in austin, tx. And there is another one he does with Jeff Healey. Check them both out.
He played in small places all over Texas. I was at a political event, he was playing, all the people in suits were talking, I grabbed chair and sat down right in front o him and they played the night to me.
Definitely check out some more Stevie, like others have said, Texas Flood, Lenny, Little Wing from El Mocambo are great. And if you want to check out a current artist that is heavily influenced by SRV, check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd Voodoo Child live from the Blues Cruise (the 22min version if you really want to have some fun) or While We Cry from Summerfest
SRV usually carried 3 guitars all the time , It was not uncommon for him to switch mid song without missing anything or pausing. He used very heavy strings, yet still broke them all the time due to some massive bends. The worn guitar you see here known as #1 is his main and is often referred to as the "The 1st Wife", I believe it is currently on display at the Texas State Museum. Fender sells replicas the standard finish I believe is about $1700 US and the relics usually run $5k
Stevie was actually a bit quite and almost shy when I seen him talk. He was flamboyant on stage for sure, but I think he was just chill and laid back off the stage. And not only was SRV one of the best of all time, his band was nothing but top notch elite players.
considering that Stevie uses the thickest strings available for a better sound, he had to work much harder than any other guitar player, he was the best
Stevie liked to dress like he was about to have a 17th century duel or a 19th century duel. Dressed like an outlaw, especially later in life. Looked like a gunslinger when he died.
