With how much was put into the planets themselves in this part, I have a feeling part 2 will be a big POI overhaul. Not saying these updates haven't been incredible as it is, but I think a whole range of new, expansive POIs is something that would really compliment part 1, and is the next big overhaul the game needs.
@chickenwar1

@@Aussie_Tomabsolutely agree, and since this first part focuses on basically all the core components of planets, the only other things i could see being worked on part two, would be POIs, resources, and perhaps the few remaining planet types that didn't show up in the patch notes for part 1 (barren planets, anomalous planets, and dissonant planets).

That's actually kind of ironic. I'm guessing you're a teenage or very early 20s, and don't realize/remember/know that when they stared NMS, it was actually the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what you wrote. Sean Murray completely failed at NMS the first few years of it's existence. They've definitely improved the game a lot since then, but they robbed a lot of people of their pre-order money and collector's edition money in the beginning, without delivering a science fiction novel cover. I still think it's sad that people who spent $50-$60 on the game, got a crap game and got robbed......and now people can get the game for $5 with all these updates. It's a mixed bag of emotions when it comes to this game. It's great that the game keeps updating and improving, but it only has this "greatest story in the video game history" (stealing the comment above mine lol) because they themselves dug the hole they were in. It's like someone causing a problem, and then fixing the problem they caused..... only to get praised for fixing the problem (which wouldn't have existed in the first place if it wasn't for that person).

It's amazing how far $60M can go when it's going to a passionate indie team and not to a public mega corp whose executive makes at least as much per year. Look how long they've continued development, sustaining themselves on the massive launch 8 years ago and continued sales because of these huge free updates and growth onto newer platforms. In an era of $70 base games with $20+ skins and multiple $20-40 battle passes, this is the sort of game we should all be supporting. This is how gaming should be.

I was sold on the hype for NMS from day 1. I saw Sean's passion and vision, and believed in him. While I don't think the product we have today would've been possible without Sony, I also think they nearly killed it before it could blossom. They forced the small studio to put out an incomplete version of what they described and wanted to publish. Luckily, after meeting this criteria, and later opening up to PC and Xbox, they gained enough freedom, time and funding to not only bring to fruition what was originally promised, but many many times beyond that. They've overdelivered so many times, and every time the content is free to all owners. It's truly incredible.

You could sit in the rain on a lonely mountain, in a planet no other person alive has ever seen, and listen to the rain hit the roof of your ship. It was very desolate, but also very freeing as an open world game that isn't really rivaled today.

So... Something I realized, pondering on this-- For those of you really hoping they add some wild, revolutionary stuff, or completely overhaul parts of the game? I think there's a chance they might be moving towards being able to do some of that starting with this update. It's easy to miss, 'cause it sounds like buzzwords, and it *looks* like it's just special effects, but what's actually going on here is that they are *digging back into this 8 year-old game's engine* and changing some root functions entirely. That's why this update has had more random crashes than previous updates, there's a ton of weird stuff under the hood being touched and some of the ripple effects of that cause stuff to break. (There was a hotfix literally today starting to address this stuff.) Point is, fucking with root systems and keeping your game intact is actually *really* hard. This is all 'minor impact' stuff, things that won't really rock the boat too hard-- I think they're using it to test the waters for how well they can handle changing the core while the game is still live. Give it time and it might end up ship of thesseus'd into something its old self could have never dreamed of. I think that's what this team wants more than anything. And that's... Kind of nuts, really? Usually anything resembling that effort requires tearing the entire game down and rebuilding it (See: FFXIV, for instance) but for better or worse, once again, Hello Games will commit to the most ridiculous option of all... Godspeed to them, I suppose. Digging yourself out of technical debt with anything less than the nuclear option is never easy and to do it in a live service game is to be possessed by madness, but when has that ever stopped them before?

I preordered this game all those years ago. All I can say is thank you. You didn't have to do this but you've gone above and beyond. I'm thoroughly enjoying playing this update! There's so much to do and see!

My dear dear Hello Games - 6+ years of playing and you delight and surprise constantly. This looks absolutely amazing and I cannot WAIT to play. I play other games but none bring the joy, delight, relaxation and happiness that I get playing NMS. My gratitude for your art and leadership in this industry. You give hope, and model magic.

The world mocked Sean Murray and Hello Games, but they didn’t flinch. They dug in, believed in their work, and turned laughter and mockery into admiration and applause. Sometimes, the best way to answer the doubters is to stick to your guns and just keep building.

What surprises me about NMS is that I keep dipping back into it. It's a universe you can visit from time to time to see how it's evolved. I get immersed in discovery, and then extract myself for a while, knowing I'll be back soon. In that sense, it's unlike any other game I've ever played and probably will ever play again.

It's my favourite game of the last 10 years. There have been objectively better games, but none of them keep me coming back. I just get the hankering to go and visit all my old bases again and see if they've been reclaimed by the earth of whatever planet they are on. It's like coming home.

@@Fivemacs I bought this at launch and loved it straight away. The reasons I loved it then haven't changed. I said back then in my Steam review, playing this is not about any goal or points... it's more of a feeling. Some people get it and some people don't, and that's just fine.

Thank you HG. I don't know if someone cut some onions nearby, but I'm tearing up here. NMS is such a wonderful game, and been part of my life for 8 years. It keeps on changing, getting better and better. Love it. Thank you.

As someone who has enjoyed this game since the first day release, I am so amazed at how much this game has developed. I used to spend so much time playing in the early days when there wasn't much to do, and now it feels like a brand new game again. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU Sean, and the rest of the Hello Games team. You guys are truly the best development team out there. No other company would continuously give out these huge (FREE) updates 8 years after release. Keep it up guys.
