Starting strength fixed my back as well as my knee. I actually think the knee issue was secondary to the back. I work at a primary care clinic and 90% of people have the same issue causing chronic low back pain and if you learn how to do a squat and dead lift correctly you can fix it!
I found Ripp's blue book 12 years ago and started the NLP after 40+ years of running ended with a menisectomy. I'm now 64 with no knee pain, no back pain, and attribute it to lifting multiple times per week. If you don't lift weights, you need to.
I had all kinds of back problems. Thought I couldn't do deadlifts because I have a bad back. Turns out I have a bad back cause I was afraid of deadlifts. Don't believe the lies... deadlifts are excellent IF you follow the SS techniques. Work your way up slow and change your life!!!! I started at 135# and could feel in my back. Just pulled 315# today and no back pain.
I always find it amusing when the bodybuilder coach types are talking to untrained or detrained athletes and the gym prospect leads with their concern about getting too bulky. The bodybuilder looks at them like, "You think this was an accident?" There are plenty of steps between 'unhealthy' and 'too bulky', stop when 'too bulky' is the next one, because it isn't the first one.
