This is one thing I always seem to forget to do with my long exposures. If you want to stabilize your shot-especially in windy conditions-do this one thing and it will help you get that sharp image you're after.
It's just one of the many things you should do to ensure you get sharp long exposure photos.

I would also recommend not extending the center column of the tripod (this is in contradiction to the way you had your tripod set up in the video). Also make sure that all knobs are fastened - nothing should be loose or wiggly. And another trick could be to hang something heavy from the bottom of the center column - but only if there is not much wind ...

Great tips! I’m ok with extending the center column, just not all the way. As long as it’s still sturdy then I’m good. Usually only about 1/3 of the way up for me anyway (outside, at least!) ;)

Great tips, thanks! Two other tips: If possible (safety, weather) remove the lens hood on a long lens. It tends to catch the wind as well. Also, I try to remember to turn off VR if I'm on a tripod. I've heard that it can add a tiny bit of movement as it's doing its job.

Yes to the VR-I forgot about that one! And I sometimes also take the hood off too although I try and refrain from doing that as much as possible as it serves to protect the front element. I don’t want anything to fly into the lens potentially damaging it.

@@taku_kumabe agreed re: the hood. I try to keep mine on, too, unless it is super windy.
