Today I'm chatting all things "chores": how we do them, if they rotate, if we reward, etc. Chime in down in the comments and let me know where you're at with chores in your home!

In our family we call light cleaning/picking up a living room/family room.....Bringing it back to Zero. If a room needs a quick decluttering we might ask what the current mess level rating is like from 1 to 10. If a room is mess level 8 or more then everyone helps with it and the challenge is to bring it back to Zero in the quickest time possible. It's quite fun to race the clock and with an incentive like caramel popcorn for movie night we all get to enjoy a clean room. 😻

We do habit style chores as well and it's made a huge difference. The kids just expect it and are starting to do it on their own. We have 5 kids and it's definitely amazing what can get done during morning chores lol

This video is super helpful for the stage our family is in right now. Could you go into a little more detail about the blue ribbons? Like how many do they need to redeem for a family movie and does each child have to contribute for something like that? We want to reward good habits, but not with trinket type things that just add to the chaos of our house and therefore giving our kids even more "things" to manage. I've struggled with good ideas to address this dilemma. Thanks!

Great video. We do 'responsibilities' in the morning and after school ( my children are not home schooled) and these are just habits now because we do them each day. The house stays clean and tidy if we all do these. Even my husband has a couple things he does each morning. We also do family contributions on Saturday and that could be any cleaning that I might not get to during the week like cleaning the car or sweeping the deck or cleaning the table and chair legs etc. We also do a quick reset before evening church.

This was super helpful! My kids are 8, 7, 5, 2, and 1. We are definitely in the chore chart phase. But I really like the concept of cleaning an entire room well as they get older. I may have to incorporate that soon. Especially since it sometimes seems like they rush through their assigned chore, not caring so much about quality.

Hey Abby, has this changed much? I'd be interested in an update, and if you could talk about how you get started with contributions with a toddler (considering that's just around the corner for you!) 💓 Thanks for sharing a bit of yourself online. I'm always encouraged and refined by what you share.

I used to do rewards like toys and treats for chores but now I will be doing different rewards like chosing dinner, choosing a board game to play, family book or other family type stuff. The little toys always become trash eventually anyway and recently sweets and treats have become a huge source of dishonesty with my 9yo foster son (I suspect a sugar addiction) so we are all taking a break from them.

I remember you used to do a system where they earned money. Just curious since you're not doing that anymore, how do they earn money now? We don't pay kids to do chores but I'm looking for ideas for them to earn money so they can learn how to manage it

I'm curious what the yarn is for, on the laminated cards. Could you fill me in?
