Toyotas synthetic leather is extremely durable. My wifes 2017 RAV4 has it, and after 7 years and 140k miles, it still looks like new. My son has a 2016 Lexus ES350 with the same material, and it also still looks new. When we first bought the RAV4, and the sales literature claimed that it was more durable than leather, I was skeptical, but no longer.

The newer Toyotas are still questionable as they’ve had lots of issues with them. The 4Runner is the old design and I saw tons of them on the used market with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. I’m just at a point in my life where I want to keep a vehicle long term and don’t want to deal with a ton of break downs. The 4Runner seems to check all those boxes and all indications are I’ll have much better luck keeping it 10+ years if I do my part. We looked at a bunch of different makes/models too. But we will see!
@garyjarvis2730

The new Toyotas are suspect on lots of levels. Love how people scream about America First and then buy Japanese and Korean vehicles. Yes, they are assembled in the US in some cases but have a ton of Asian content. I bet most of these folks don't even look at the vehicle content sticker.
@ChristianGrest

@@garyjarvis2730 correct, most domestic vehicles are just assembled here just like many Asian vehicles that have plants here in the U.S. Unfortunately the quality of those Asian vehicles assembled here seem to have more issues too. Bummer that Ford didn't take care of a loyal customer. One component that probably prolonged your misery is the abysmal state of mechanic talent at dealerships these days, fueled in part by the compensation model which incentivizes getting the car out the door and not necessarily fixing it. There are countless articles and videos out there that discuss this. I'm only being partially facetious when I say you probably had the new guy/car wash guy rebuilding your transmission. I wouldn't take my car to any dealership unless I knew for certain they were the last and final option. Find a good independent shop and don't look back. I take all my vehicles to Automotive Performance and Chassis in Apex.
@ChristianGrest
@ChristianGrest 5 дней назад
The tech there whom I’ve spoken to many times actually was an older guy that had been a transmission tech for decades. I believe though since it was warranty, Ford wanted to go the cheapest route just to kick us out the door regardless of how long it’d take for us to come back. They did end up replacing some extra parts the last go round like the torque converter, but Ford repeatedly denied replacing the transmission despite all the records of service visits. But yea I agree, a local independent shop can be much better. I think they have more skin in the game where reputation is on the line. Typically I try and do my own work outside of warranty when it makes sense.

@@ChristianGrest Awesome 4Runner. The last Ford we had was my wife's 2004 Ford Mustang V6, old school and didn't give us many problems. Engine and transmission were solid, but that's because it was an old Fox-body car. That's the last Ford we had. I wouldn't trust the newer stuff, as I heard so many horror stories. Also don't forget GM, they make a lot of cr@p. We had a Buick Enclave that was just like your Edge - always in the shop. I really liked that car but couldn't stand the issues. Engine, transmission, AC, electrical gremlins, etc. - that car always broke down. We now have 2 Toyota Highlanders, which are much better vehicles but both have the V6. I don't trust the newer turbo engines.

I own an Edge SEL 19. Bought used at a local ford dealer at 32k miles. After 2-3 months I started noticing the jerking and hesitation when shifting. It was bad. Took it to the dealer after I found the bulletin on the transmission software update. They called me that same day and said the software didn’t work and that it needed a new torque converter and valve body. Picked up my car that day and waited a month for the parts to come in. Dropped the car a month later, was given a loaner and got my car in a week, covered under warranty. It’s now working great and I have put 15k miles on it since the repair. I read a lot in blogs about the transmission issues and they seem to be a known issue. It is frustrating, they use the same transmission in the Escape and Maverick. I feel the programming they’ve done makes the transmission fail by design. And everyone online recommends a tranny fluid change every 30k miles. I’m paying this thing off as soon as I can and will trade it in for 3 year old Toyota or Honda.

Used to never buy those but they have saved my ass lately as everything with new vehicles is so damn expensive.
