Emulators are indeed not illegal and you don't need to use a rom with the disc based ones because they allow you to run games from the disc as long as your pc/laptop (witch can be an external usb powered one) has a disc drive that can read the game.
@tyisafk
@tyisafk 4 года назад
Yea, and we can thank Bleem! for this. It was their lawsuit vs Sony that deemed emulators legal in the US. If I remember right, Bleem! used code from scratch as the result of reverse engineering the PSOne. Emulators are legal as long as the code built from the ground up. While there are options of using real BIOS, they're not provided for that reason since it's copyrighted code.

That's true but I ripped the game to my HDD as didn't want to hear the disc spinning and to reduce lag when emulating

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you can't just put a GDROM into your DVD/BR reader and have it function since it's a proprietary format. The only way to rip DC games is through Dreamshell or the BBA IIRC.

I'd go with the Dreamcast resolution since its hardware is extremely similar to the Sega NAOMI, which is what the arcade version was on.

Hard to say though. For example I know Third Strikes resolution isn't 4:3 but it's intended to be squashed onto a 4:3 screen.

4:00 that's called interlacing. That the "i" at the end of 480i. Interlacing was a method of rendering only half the screen per frame as to save on performance but as a result it just looks less sharp in motion and looks funny when paused per frame. The "p" stands for progressive scan which means the whole image is displayed at once. If your games support it (which you will have to look up online per game some requiring a button held down during launch) turn it on. Interlacing was not designed for LCDs. Avoid it at all costs. It was mainly made back in the day as CRTs hid the interlacing and on PC you could double frame rates using interlacing. On consoles it just meant lowering device demand which really wasn't important but we did it anyways.

the 480i passthrough flickering isn't the fault of the ps2 to hdmi adapter/ossc, it's the monitor's. the monitor is using a bob deinterlace so it's pretty flickery. make sure you use a deinterlace filter in obs if you're gonna use the ps2tohdmi. use the yadif 2x deinterlacer. it'll remove the combing artifacts and it'll show at 60fps. no matter what you're gonna get flickering when you're running at 480i (with your monitor at least), thats just the nature of 480i. personally i'd go with the line4x mode for 480i if you can handle it. it'll look better and the flicker is less noticable to my eyes.

Assuming budget is not a significant limiting factor, forget about OSSC at this point if you are thinking about buying it. The OSSC Pro is coming later this year and will have a full frame buffer. You can select simple line multiplication, adaptive line multiplication, or full frame buffer. The buffer will support full deinterlacing, rotation, and scaling filters. If the OSSC Pro can fully address all of the deficiencies of the original and those of the Micomsoft Framemeister as well, it will be the best solution hands down.

The best output you could possibly get on the Dreamcast would be getting the DCHDMI which is a custom board that adds HDMI output to the Dreamcast. Its pixel perfect and has the option to change resolutions. It also has a wifi antenna as part of the board to install any new revisions for the board (I'm not 100% sure if the wifi antenna can allow for online play on the system though) The downside of this is its a hard mod to do so its an additional cost of having to send your console to have some one do the installation for you on top of buying the custom board. Its a really expensive mod that, over here in the US, comes out to around 200 dollars so its if you really want to go all out just for the Dreamcast. That OSSC output you got for your Dreamcast does look amazing. Nice work!

The Dreamcast (And Xbox and GC/Wii come to think of it) are AMAZING at handling 480p. The PS2 on the other hand is very complicated because Sony wanted developers to squeeze as much performance as possible out of the system. The PS2 is the least powerful, but it was very capable using very "hacky" ways of doing it. The reason is because the other systems actually render the game in 480p, but then the output is transcoded to output in 480i. For the PS2, there are games that are actually RENDERED this way. Not all games, but a good handful. A good example of this is SMT3: Nocturne. Even if you force 480p using homebrew, it still does a bob-flicker deinterlacing even though the PS2 is actually outputting a 480p progressive signal. The only fix for that is using an emulator with a patch that doubles the internal vertical resolution, so a pure 480p homebrew patch for PS2 is impossible. If I can play a game from that generation on any of the other systems, Dreamcast and Gamecube are my go-to consoles for this reason.

You can add alternating scanlines on the ossc for interlaced video that to me makes the picture much more comfortable to view. Just make sure that the scanline intensity is set lower and it will look a lot more authentic like a crt.

To get a perfect picture on my Dreamcast I used a VGA cable for the Dreamcast and a special VGA to HDMI adapter box. The VGA also had the audio as left and right and had to be adapted into a 3.5mm on the HDMI adapter. So a tripper part system just to run the thing. Suprisingly though, lag seems imperceptible and the image is clearer than anything else I've tried, but the converter box has been discontinued and there is an issue in that the TV doesn't exactly know where to put the image on the screen so it may not be perfectly centered. But no flicker as VGA was a solid 480p image, and lag seems next to nothing which was my main concern. But color and clarity is fantastic. A pain in the ass to setup but it was worth it. Lag is probably terrible for competitive gaming but fine for couch gaming.

The recognised name of the "combing effect" is called "interlacing". PS2's display 480i i believe instead of 480p.
@snintendog
@snintendog 4 года назад
a majority of PS2 games are only 480i some games support 480p but must always be tuned on with a button combo or homebrewed into effect. The other consoles Dreamcast/Xbox/Gamecube auto deteck if you are using a progressive output and either auto change to highest supported resolution or askyou at boot if you want to enable it the Xbox is by far the best when it comes to this as you can set it to a certain resolution max in the OS settings and games will play in the max resolution they support.

@NihingoGamer I’m an OSSC owner and the interlaced issue is just a matter of the content of the time. Old consoles like the SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PS1 and others from before the PS2/Dreamcast and others era put out progressive(240p) signals which is the OSSC’s strength in my opinion. After that you start getting mostly interlaced(480i) signals from all consoles even the Dreamcast is 480i standard you have to use vga to get the progressive scan signal. Also it sounds like you were using rgb scart with the PS2 setup which isn’t necessary wrong because the OSSC’s standard input is scart but you benefit more from component cables as the PS2 can output 480p with a lot of titles actually. Street Fighter Alpha anthology, Vampire collection, Garou: MotW YO! Tekken 4 looks amazing in progressive mode all you have to do is hold like x and /_\ when boot up the game. Also many of the SNK compilations that came out for PS2 output 240p for gameplay so the menus are bad but the games look great as you’d expect. Fatal Fury collection vol2 for sure does this so Real Bout 2 can be line........ quintupled to like 1200p. Your to or monitor has to be able to accept the signal or corse but it’s really cool so don’t sleep on the PS2 it has its strengths but CvS2 just isn’t one of them.

PS2 version of CVS2 is more problematic because it runs at half vertical resolution, which also prevent use of flicker-filter, even on CRT flicker was very noticiable. It also can't be run at a progressive resolution. Try comparing PS2 VF4 and VF4evo, both are 480i only, former has the same resolution as CVS2, later has full vertical res + flicker filter, making combing and flicker much less noticiable. DC VGA is kind of a mess (640 drawn inside 720), it isn't a problem with a VGA CRT as you can just stretch the image. OSSC bob deinterlacing is the only method which doesn't introduce lag (like 2 lines of delay), but it can't save PS2 half res interlace :)
@dargor32
@dargor32 4 года назад
In the OSSC you can use the passthrough option for PS2 it removes the flicker completely
@davidste60
@davidste60 4 года назад
No it doesn't, it passes it through. If there's no flicker it's because your TV is then doing wonders with the image (or the game is running in 480p mode natively), and almost certainly adding extra lag.

I think the Dreamcast version is the winner here, just because it support 480p. The PS2 version Achilles heel is the lack of 480p support. Meaning that you have 3 main options, each with its caveats: 1. Bob de-interlacing like the OSSC does. With means that the image will flicker but no lag is introduced. 2. A high-quality 480i de-interlacing like how the Framemeister does but with 2-3 frames of lag. Plus spending 350+ dollars on it. 3. Directly connected to a TV with component cables. With might not introduced a flicker effect but it’ll definitively introduce more lag than the Framemeister. (Worse option, of course). Emulation is out of the question because it introduces lag as well. Also, I don’t understand why Capcom didn’t support 480p on the PS2. Technically, the PS2 is more powerful than the Dreamcast.

Nice, not too much detail. The main issue I have with the OSSC is; I can record 240p content and it looks great upscaled but 480i just looks pixelated. Tekken and Tekken 2 look nice and clear but Tekken 3 is 480i and although you get used to it, it's a step down in quality. Trying to capture every Tekken game has been a nightmare because my choices for Tekken 3 are either blury image, pixelated image or combed image using a PS3. Eventually I decided to emulate it but then you don't get something that looks as authentic because you change the internal resolution artificially and then, I get a headache trying to justify spending money on real hardware for consistency when I could just emulate everything (or can you?) .

Correction: PS2 can output RGB, but you need to manually set that in the component out settings. 19:24 Guys, NO! I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT LINE DOUBLE 480i CONTENT. This line doubling is fine if you are sending the OSSC games that sun at 240p or 288p, because the signals are progressive. Meaning the OSSC has all the lines that make up the image right from the word go. But in 480i and 576i content, at any given time the OSSC only has half the lines that make up the image to work with. An interlaced signal alternates between the odd and even numbered lines separately. And so by line doubling interlaced content, you actually LOSE half the resolution to create a pesudo-progressive signal. If you must deinterlace PS2 games, you should use something like a Framemeister. Hell, even cheap SCART or Component to HDMI scalers will do a better job deinterlacing actual interlaced content than the OSSC.

Also if you want to completely get rid of interlacing on OBS just send the interlaced image through OSSC to OBS (maybe using passthrough mode or laced modes?) and make obs use YADIF 2x deinterlacing. the downside is that you cant really send this signal to the TV. That would make the TV use its built in interlacer which can be laggy/bad depending on your TV. What I do is use a component splitter straight into a Startech USB3HDCAP (that capture card is godlike for retro) and then use yadif 2x on the capture card source. then the OSSC goes into the TV/Monitor with bob deinterlacing. that is a little clunky tho because startech usb3hdcap needs custom drivers to handle 240p and thats a headache to setup.

just a bit of context 90% of the issues are due to not HDMI but rather the TVs/capcards being VERY picky about what they receive IE Elgatos always want PERFECT resolution and when given one that isnt it does 1 of 2 things it STRETCHES it out,cuts pixels out or it tries to recenter it to the nearest resolution this is very similar to how TVs work they will take an output that isnt exact recenter the image and have null space to it now the closest interger scale resolution or it pulls the image. The darkening and washingout is due to the HDMI not setting the dynamic range correct or trying to compensate for some issue they perceived(dont do that give us settings if you wont give us the raw image). The Shimerring from the Interlacing is due to the Hrz rate dropping just below on some games causes the jitter or the interlaced frames to be seen as it dropped out of the 60HRz rat to 59.7-59.9 Hrz this is a major issue for the digital age has most monitor/tv/cap card cant display this so the box of choice either forces this to 60 flat causing this issues or the low end monitors and almost all tvs just wont accept the image or have the image drop out when it happens CRTs and OSSC have been the only ones i have found around this issue though running the OSSC Output through the frameister will clean up the HDMI signal to the flat 60 without the shimmering coming back but traded for a small bit of lag(1-2 frames). Sadly so far the only True option for accurate Retro games are CRTs, the OSSC, or the Framemeister(lag is an issue here but 1-2 frames at worst and component softening).

The simplest and cheapest solution is to just go out and buy a CRT TV. Old stuff look like absolute ass on modern day HDTVs. Not to mention the added latency. If you want to stream it, you can tap the signal out however you want.

At high level.... get DCHDMI or now called DCDigital (copyright issue with the HDMI name). All top Dreamcast streams of MVC2 and CVS2 are adopting DCDigital as the standard. At middle level.... get any of the products from Behar Bros. They have an HDMI box, VGA box, as well as a SCART box. Emulators are fine... but things like accuracy and lag will hold you back from being a "pro player". NullDC Online has been constantly being tweaked and getting much better. They have been hosting tournaments with this method for a good while now PS2 to HDMI and Pound cables? They are good for absolute casual gaming of CVS2. But meh... you get what you paid for.
@MizoxNG
@MizoxNG 4 года назад
I tried the Beharbros boxes, they sample at completely the wrong resolution. several lines of the image are cut off and due to differences in pixel clock, about 43 columns of pixels are gone, I got exactly the same results from a $15 adapter off of amazon. OSSC beats it hands-down.
@StephanieHua
@StephanieHua 4 года назад
@@MizoxNG Agreed, in addition... I've also heard the Behar Bros VGA box also has color issues. I have read that the original Sega VGA box is the best but they are hard to find so I pretend they don't exist. I have yet to hear reviews/news about the recently released SCART from Retrocables UK, as well as the upcoming HD Retrovision cable.
@MizoxNG
@MizoxNG 4 года назад
@@StephanieHua I was looking into those. presumably both cables were supposed to launch some time this year, but both companies went completely silent on them after january, so I can only assume the current situation delayed those plans. that said, newer monitors and televisions are increasingly removing support for ALL analog formats, so I've been trying to get a good HDMI solution before my old monitor wears out. that said, the official OSSC is only about $160 right now, and there's hardware clones on ebay for as little as $110, so all things considered, it's not a bad option

Emulators are the easiest solutions. And like you said they are NOT illegal. It baffles me how so many people don't understand this.
@BrianOblivionB

Yeh... Then again it's fun playing on original hardware
@davidste60
@davidste60 4 года назад
People don't understand it because it IS confusing. Emulators are legal but downloading games for them isn't and depending on the country and the lawyer ripping your own games might be technically illegal or technically a grey area in terms of legality. So the fact that emulators are legal isn't as straightforward as it seems unless you just like to look at the menu screen of the program :)
@CyborgPilord
@CyborgPilord 4 года назад
imma just say it, emulators now run better than discs. Not better than arcades/carts. But better than discs. PCSX2 and Redream are great, and NOT illegal these people claiming otherwise really need to "do their research."

The PS2 is awkward, the Dreamcast came out near a year or two before and didn't have de-interlaced/480p natively like the Dreamcast and Xbox. Also hardly any games (Tekken 3, The Getaway with RGB scart, Gran Turismo 3 etc)

Okay, so question...I actually have an older Elgato model that outputs HDMI, and has input for HDMI, but also has a seperate AV port and I have an adapter that allows me to plug a PS2 directly into the Elgato. How's the capture on a set up like that? Normally I play my PS2 on a CRT I have, but if I wanted to capture/stream it, I was gonna use the Elgato naturally, so how might an image through there come out? I'm still getting some equipment for streaming, and game capture, so I haven't had a chance to test it myself yet.
@NihongoGamer
@NihongoGamer 4 года назад
An elgato with analog input and hdmi output? Double check that the hdmi signal isn’t very laggy. Even if it is, u might be able to split the signal to go directly into CRT for gaming and a separate signal to the elgato for streaming/capture
@KitRobin
@KitRobin 4 года назад
@@NihongoGamer I don't know if splitting it is possible, because the adapter it comes with has 1 end that plugs into the elgato, and the other end plugs directly into the PS2. It's that unique output that only the PS2 has, so unless there is some kind of splitter out there for that.
