In response to 5"15 about the CRT, there are certain games that did take advantage of the blurry image of RF/Composite and the scan lines of a CRT and combined them to make a more detailed image, and it can't be replicated with scan converters like the OSSC. Also if you look into it you can get your scart cables hooked up to a CRT, or use the HD retrovision on a component capable CRT and it will look nice and sharp without the need for the OSSC.

I agree. Every time I read or watch videos like this I wonder if these people REALLY played on a CRT TV, properly. Only Plasma Displays look almost "on par" with the clarity and resolution in motion that only CRT TVs can .

@Red05x

@@symol30872 Well, that's the Composite Cable, no the CRT. BUT even Composite looks better on a CRT than RGB OSSC on a LCD or OLED. I'm not talking about still pictures but video content. EDIT: Also, PlayStation 3 looks AMAZING on a CRT TV, even with Composite Cable (some games I'm pretty sure were made with CRT TV in mind, some weren't). Have you seen resident evil 4 PS3 version on a CRT TV? Every time I put the System and game, I'm amazed HOW GOOD and better looks on the CRT TV than on my OLED. Love your videos man. Just wanted to offer this thought; originally I like you wanted no scanlines, just totally bright clean pixels. Then it occured to me when the games designers made the games there was no choice but to have scan lines. How the games look was designed around the scanlines. To remove them, is to take away from how the games were made to be seen. To trying to change how you play, but when I realised that, I change and never went back. I found that they actually made the games look better not worse. As counterintuitive as that sounds. Anyway, just a thought. You do you, and keep enjoying the games!

One thing I would really like from a device like this (especially since it's aimed directly at games) is some of the filters that you find in emulators, such as SAI, Eagle, and AdvMAME. I have both, and prefer for the most part the OSSC over the FMeister... It is sharper than the FM when your television is compatible with it. The FM wins only when you need say composite input, you need TV compatibility, because it works with just about any TV or if you are doing any game capture. My primary reason for liking the OSSC over the FMeister is the 1-2 frames of lag added by the up-scaling method of the FMeister, that the OSSC does not add with it's line multiplying method.

I take from your vid that essentially there is no difference in quality but SCART seems to be cheaper over RetroVision cables. For someone that is looking to change over different retro consoles it seems SCART would be better (since AV is cabled over one plug/cable VS 3 RCA + 3.5mm.) SCART seems like a no brainer for cost and convenience over component. But have I missed anything?

I'm one of those "crazy people", and devs did develop their games around the CRT TV. Majority of games on SEGA Genesis, for example make heavy use of "dithering" to fake a larger color palette than the Genesis could handle, plus dithering was also used to fake transparency on both SNES and Genesis, e.g. the waterfalls in Sonic 1. These sprite-based classics were not meant to look this sharp or clean. They NEED a bit of blur and color bleeding to make Dev tricks work in a lot of games. Just try playing Comix Zone on that OSSC! Because of the heavy use of dithering in the game, it looks extremely ugly when you upscale it using the OSSC to make it as sharp as possible. Mortal Kombat on Genesis also will look far uglier and have a a worse picture through the OSSC than just using s-video on a CRT because that game needs blurring and color bleeding to extend the color palette. This isn't stuff "crazy people" think. These are cold hard facts. Without these dev tricks, your favorite 16-bit games will look very ugly de-blurred and upscaled. Also, while scanlines and blur help soften the edges of pixel sprites, that fake Scanline effect in OSSC looks awful and is nowhere near what real CRT scanlines looked like. You can't replicate CRT scanlines with just a bunch of uneven black lines (they need to be perfectly spaced out according to the game's internal resolution), you'd also need a gaussian-blur and color-bloom effect to make the scanlines believable and look good. Sorry, but the cleaner and sharper 16-bit pixel games look, the uglier they are, especially for Genesis games, and that's not crazy talk.

The ossc is way better than the Framemeister imo. Zero lag, If your tv supports 5x, it’ll be sharper than the framemeister. Also, if you’re playing games that change resolution (like silent hill’s pause menu), it becomes unplayable with the framemeister. And of course, the ossc is cheaper. I ended up selling my framemeister once I got my ossc. The only advantage I can think of is that it supports composite and S video. But I just got an extron cd400, so now those cables work with the ossc as well. The ossc is constantly getting better with its updates! It’s one of the best gaming investments I’ve made.

Gamming graphics are so personal to each different way a person subconscious sees it that theres no one shoe fits all.With rite tv and software filters external scanline generator with pixel sizing and blending into the scanline beautifully to get the smooth depth pixels and blend the the brightness into the scanline and games picture to hide some scanline so you barely see them and beautiful picture with rendering blending to.

Hey guys, I’ve purchased some of the Pound Technology HDMI cables. They aren’t perfect, but for $30 I think they are great. When I think I played these games originally through coaxial cable, the slight discoloration that sometimes shows up with the Pound isn’t too bad.

I wish my childhood self or my parents had the forethought to save and preserve all our consoles and games throughout the years. We had all of them but the sega saturn at one time or another.

Forgot about the RetroTink, a budget ($100ish) solution that does 2x pixel scaling and supports composite video, composite, vga and Svideo The OSSC is over $200 and high quality components or scart cables will run 60 dollars per system. That's not bad price for enthusiast, but expensive for casual fans. if youre a person who wants to dust off an old system, but also have an acceptable picture and response time, The retrotink will likely be good enough. Unlike the OSSC, it won't require expensive cables or system mods for most systems (coax only systems like the 2600 or top loader NES will still need a mod)

YIKES on that first upscaler that you showed as an example. A dedicated upscaler that is worse than what is normally built into TVs? Ouch.

Hey so I have an ossc and used good rca scart cables for both ps1 and ps2 games. I noticed the characters on games like smackdown! 2 know your role and Jill on Resident evil 3 looks pixelated. Do you know exactly how I can fix that?

What if you just use a snes classic or a nes classic? Wouldn't that be the highest resolution possible since it uses HDMI?

Hello, Okay so just want to get this straight. If I purchased a Scart RGB cable for my original XBOX, would it work on my Framemeister? I planned on purchasing a Scart RGB cable for mr original XBOX today but I wanted to ask you this question before I did. Thx in advance!

I can't find GameCube or PS1 component cables anywhere.... :_( . Can someone advise of the best connection solutions between the OSSC and console ?

Bob I think you should of used GcHd mark II with Wii component cables going to the ossc. This is the main reason I've wanted an ossc since the GcHd mark II released. I'd really like to see you do this since I dont think any youtubers have tried this yet... The framemeister can't line double 480p but the ossc can, so in this instance the ossc is the way to go...

Composite can be fine, it's just most scalers don't handle composite as we originally saw it on CRT which while not great is nowhere near as bad as modern TVs butcher the signal. The OSSC is good but I'd just suggest buying a retrotink to cover the NES and N64 since they don't natively support RGB anyways and for the NES it's not even possible on the PPU so the mod itself is expensive, complicated and requires an FPGA and it's basically the same for the N64 unless you got an early N64 before they removed the RGB signal completely from that system. I've owned both now for a month and all I can say is they've been both far too useful not to suggest getting them both when possible and its still cheaper than buying a Framemeister when it wasn't being sold for some outrageous price like it is now.
